For a mixed Ryobi 18V ONE+ collection, I would buy the 4Ah PBP005 first, keep a 2Ah PBP006 for compact tools, add a 6Ah PBP007 when runtime matters, and reserve the 8Ah PBP1108 or 12Ah PBP1112 Lithium EDGE packs for genuinely demanding tools. The 1.5Ah PBP002 is useful, but too specialized to be the main battery in most collections.
The short answer: which Ryobi battery should you buy again?
Ryobi’s 18V ONE+ system spans more than 300 compatible products. That breadth makes one-battery-fits-every-job shopping tempting, but capacity changes the balance, runtime and suitability of each tool. Ryobi rates capacity in amp-hours (Ah): a higher Ah rating generally provides longer runtime, while also making the pack larger and heavier.
That leads to a practical four-tier setup:
- 2Ah: compact and light for drills, drivers, lights and jobs where balance matters.
- 4Ah: the best all-around size for a collection containing drills, saws, sanders and outdoor tools.
- 6Ah: longer working time when carrying a little more weight is acceptable.
- 8Ah or 12Ah HP/Lithium EDGE: for high-demand applications that can use the extra output and runtime.
Runtime is not a fixed number. It varies with the tool, material, load, speed and application, so no battery should be advertised as lasting a universal number of minutes.
Best Ryobi ONE+ batteries by job
| Battery | Best use | Balance and runtime | Position in a collection |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1.5Ah PBP002 | Very light, occasional work | Smallest and easiest to handle, but shortest capacity in this shortlist | Specialist spare rather than a primary battery |
| 2Ah PBP006 | Drills, impact drivers, lights and compact tools | Ryobi describes it as compact and lightweight; favors balance over runtime | Keep several for handheld tools and overhead work |
| 4Ah PBP005 | Mixed DIY, saws, sanders and general outdoor tools | Middle-ground size with useful runtime without the bulk of the largest packs | Best default and the first battery to buy again |
| 6Ah PBP007 | Longer jobs and tools that drain packs quickly | More runtime than 4Ah, with additional size and weight | Add when swapping batteries interrupts work |
| 8Ah PBP1108 Lithium EDGE | High-demand ONE+ HP applications | Large pack intended to sustain demanding loads | Buy when the tool can justify its weight and cost |
| 12Ah PBP1112 Lithium EDGE | The heaviest-duty applications | Maximum capacity in this list, and the largest physical burden | A performance option, not an everyday pack for every tool |
Why 4Ah is the all-purpose choice
The PBP005 occupies the useful center of the range. It is large enough for saws, sanders and outdoor equipment, yet avoids making every drill or driver unnecessarily heavy. If you are building a collection without knowing which tools you will add next, 4Ah is the least-regret starting point.

When 2Ah is better than 4Ah
Choose the PBP006 when the tool is held at arm’s length, used overhead or carried for long periods. A lighter battery can improve control and reduce fatigue even if it requires more frequent changes. Ryobi lists an LED fuel gauge, IntelliCell technology and COOL-CORE heat management on this model.
When 6Ah is worth the weight
The PBP007 makes sense when stopping to change batteries costs more time than carrying a heavier pack. It is a runtime choice, not an automatic performance upgrade for every tool. On a small drill, its extra mass may make the tool less comfortable without delivering a meaningful benefit.
Are the 8Ah and 12Ah Lithium EDGE packs worth it?
Ryobi positions standard ONE+ batteries for everyday DIY, maintenance, gardening and cleaning. It positions 18V ONE+ HP batteries for complex tasks that need more power and longer runtime. The 8Ah PBP1108 and 12Ah PBP1112 Lithium EDGE packs therefore belong on high-demand tools rather than on every device in the garage.

Ryobi says Lithium EDGE uses tabless-cell technology for more efficient energy transfer, higher output, longer life and faster charging. Ryobi Australia also says the HP family adds two terminals for communication with HP Brushless tools, while the 8Ah and 12Ah packs use larger 21700 cells designed for lower internal resistance.
Those are manufacturer design and performance claims, not independent runtime tests. The practical trade-off remains straightforward: more capacity and high-load capability in exchange for a bigger, heavier pack. Put an 8Ah or 12Ah battery on a tool only when the tool’s demand or the length of the job justifies that trade.
Do HP batteries work in every ONE+ tool?
HP and Lithium EDGE batteries are part of the 18V ONE+ family, but physical platform compatibility and HP feature support are separate questions. The Australian guide specifically describes the additional terminals as communication hardware for HP Brushless tools. A non-HP tool may not use those communication features.

Before buying a large HP pack for a particular tool, check that tool’s current compatibility listing and manual. Do not assume that every ONE+ product will receive the same benefit from an HP battery simply because the pack fits the platform. For ordinary tools, a lighter 2Ah or 4Ah pack is often the more sensible choice.

What matters besides capacity?
Weight and balance
Higher Ah batteries are generally larger and heavier. The difference is most noticeable on drills, drivers, lights, trimmers and tools used overhead. For stationary or ground-supported equipment, the same weight may be much less important.
Peak-demand performance
Capacity describes stored energy, not a guaranteed power increase. HP/Lithium EDGE packs are intended for demanding applications and include the cell and communication features Ryobi associates with that role. Match the pack to the tool’s demand instead of treating Ah as a universal power rating.

Price per usable amp-hour
No single current price applies across countries, retailers or promotions. Compare the actual price of the specific pack or kit in your region, then divide by its Ah rating as a rough value check. A cheaper high-Ah pack is not automatically the better purchase if its weight makes the tool uncomfortable.
Multipacks and tool bundles
Multipack and starter-kit availability changes by country, retailer and promotion. Check whether the bundle contains the exact PBP model, whether the listed capacity is per battery, and which warranty region applies before treating a bundle as a bargain.

- Buy 4Ah PBP005 packs first. They cover the broadest mix of common ONE+ tools.
- Add 2Ah PBP006 packs for balance-sensitive tools. Use them where low weight and maneuverability matter more than maximum runtime.
- Add a 6Ah PBP007 when job length demands it. This is the step that reduces battery swaps without jumping immediately to the largest packs.
- Buy 8Ah PBP1108 or 12Ah PBP1112 only for a proven high-demand need. Confirm the tool’s compatibility and decide whether the added weight is acceptable.
- Treat 1.5Ah PBP002 as a niche option. It is useful for very light work, but its smaller capacity makes it a poor universal replacement.
Warranty and ownership details
Ryobi’s US 18V ONE+ overview states that all 18V ONE+ batteries carry a 3-year limited warranty. Registration is handled through MyRYOBI. Warranty terms, eligible regions and registration requirements can differ outside the United States, so retain the receipt and verify the terms for the market where you purchased the battery.
Ryobi describes IntelliCell technology across current 18V ONE+ lithium batteries, and its US overview describes COOL-CORE heat management. These features are part of the platform’s published design claims; they do not replace checking the tool manual or the warranty conditions for your region.
What I would buy for specific collections
- Mostly drills, drivers and lights: 2Ah PBP006, with one 4Ah PBP005 for longer sessions.
- A mixed DIY workshop: several 4Ah PBP005 packs, then one 2Ah PBP006 for compact tools.
- Outdoor tools and long projects: 4Ah PBP005 as the everyday pack plus 6Ah PBP007 for runtime.
- High-demand HP Brushless equipment: 6Ah for general work, adding 8Ah PBP1108 or 12Ah PBP1112 Lithium EDGE only when the tool and workload warrant the extra size.
The manufacturer’s slogan is “One Battery. 300+ Tools. Endless Possibilities.” The useful part of that promise is the shared platform; the right battery still depends on the individual tool, load and time you need to work.
