Opening a port makes a service on your home network reachable from the public Internet. Shodan can later catalog that exposure by collecting publicly visible service information, such as banners. Finding the port does not prove that anyone broke in, and the reported “two hours” timing is an individual account rather than an independently verified measurement.

What Shodan actually found

Shodan describes itself as “a search engine for Internet-connected devices.” Unlike a conventional search engine, it gathers information from devices directly connected to the Internet, primarily through publicly available service banners. Those banners can reveal that an address responds on a particular port and may identify the protocol, product or version that answered.

When you configure port forwarding, your router sends traffic arriving on a public port to a device and service inside your network. For example, a forwarded port might lead to a remote-desktop service, a camera interface, a game server or a file-sharing application. Shodan does not need access to your private Wi-Fi or to every device in your house to observe that Internet-facing response; it can record what the public address presents.

What an open port means—and does not mean

Nmap documentation defines an open port as one where an application is actively accepting connections. Its security guidance warns that each open port is an avenue for attack because every reachable service adds another place where an attacker can probe for weaknesses.

An open state is not proof of compromise. It tells you that a network path exists and that something answered. Risk depends on the service, its protocol, authentication, configuration, software version and the firewall rules around it. A current service with strong authentication and tightly restricted source addresses is materially different from an obsolete administration interface exposed to everyone.

Why the “two hours” claim needs qualification

A device can be indexed quickly after it becomes reachable, but the exact interval depends on scanning schedules, Internet routing, the public IP address and what the service returns. The two-hour discovery time in the headline is an anecdote from the account described, not a verified statistic or a guarantee that every forwarded port will appear in Shodan within two hours.

  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

Shodan’s listing and an attacker’s ability to use the service are separate events. A banner may identify a port without revealing valid credentials, and a service may reject unauthorized requests. Conversely, a quiet-looking banner does not make an outdated or poorly protected service safe.

Why local and Internet scans can disagree

Port status is always measured from a vantage point. Nmap documents that a port can appear open from the same local network yet appear filtered when scanned across the Internet. Your router may allow an internal device to connect directly, while its WAN firewall blocks unsolicited traffic from outside. Hairpin NAT, split DNS and router-specific loopback behavior can also make an internal test unlike a real Internet request.

To verify a forwarding rule, test from a network that is not behind the same router, such as a phone’s cellular connection or another trusted external network. Confirm the public address, test only the port you own, and identify the application that responds. Treat an external “closed” or “filtered” result as evidence about that particular vantage point, not as proof that the internal service is stopped.

What to check before leaving the port open

  • Need: Confirm that remote access is required. If the service is unused, remove the forwarding rule and stop the service.
  • Identity: Determine exactly which device, application and protocol receive the traffic. Do not rely on the port number alone.
  • Updates: Install supported firmware and application security updates before exposing the service.
  • Authentication: Use unique, strong credentials and enable multi-factor authentication when the service supports it. Disable default accounts and unused login methods.
  • Scope: Restrict the router or host firewall to known source IP addresses or a private access method where practical, instead of allowing the whole Internet.
  • Monitoring: Review service logs and router events for repeated failed logins, unexpected accounts or unfamiliar source addresses.

Close an unnecessary port forward safely

  1. Record the current rule, including the external port, internal IP address, protocol and destination device. This prevents accidental disruption of an unrelated service.
  2. Sign in to the router’s administration page and open the section labeled Port Forwarding, NAT, Virtual Server or a similar term.
  3. Disable or delete the rule, then apply or save the configuration. If the router offers both TCP and UDP entries, remove every entry that belongs to the unneeded service.
  4. Stop or disable the destination application on the internal device, and remove any automatic port-mapping rule created through UPnP if you do not need it.
  5. From an external network, test the former public port again. It should report closed or filtered, depending on the router and scan method.
  6. Keep the router and destination device patched, and change credentials if the service was exposed with weak or reused passwords.

Choosing between open, closed and restricted access

Approach Internet reachability Security conditions When it fits
Leave the forward open Anyone who can route to the public address can attempt the service Requires a necessary service, current patches, strong authentication, logging and a carefully configured host and router firewall A genuinely public service that must accept connections
Close the forward No unsolicited Internet path to that service through the rule Reduces exposure; the application should still be secured internally Remote access is no longer needed
Restrict access Reachable only from allow-listed networks or through a private access method Requires reliable address controls, authentication and maintenance of the private access system Remote administration or personal services used by a known set of users

Answering the practical questions

Can someone see a port I opened?

Yes. A publicly reachable service can be discovered by Internet scanners, and Shodan may record the response and its banner. Visibility does not establish that the service was entered.

What does the port expose?

It exposes the listening application and whatever information that application returns before authentication. The port itself is only the entry point; the service’s flaws and configuration determine the consequential risk.

Why did my local scan say open?

The local scan may have used a shorter path that bypasses the WAN firewall or NAT behavior. Repeat the check from outside your home network and identify the protocol and service responsible.

The defensible takeaway

Consider every forwarded port an intentional Internet publication. Keep it only when the service is necessary, patched and protected; otherwise remove the forward, disable the service and verify the change from an external network. Regular self-scanning, as recommended in Nmap’s documentation, helps catch rules that were left behind or created automatically.
