If you received a fake HR email with a VHDX attachment and a spreadsheet-looking shortcut, stop interacting with the files and contact your organization’s IT or security team promptly. The filename and icon do not show what the shortcut would run, but receiving the attachment alone does not prove that malware executed or credentials were stolen. The key facts are whether the disk was mounted, the shortcut opened, a command or program ran, or credentials were entered.
What does “container smuggling” mean in this kind of phishing email?
A VHDX is a virtual hard disk file: a container that can hold other files. In this reported pattern, the email presents a familiar HR pretext, while the disk image contains a shortcut made to look like a spreadsheet. The container is a delivery method; it does not, by itself, establish that anything ran on the recipient’s computer.
This pattern has a documented historical analogue, but not a confirmed connection to this incident. Sophos described a chain observed by its MDR team in August 2022 involving a phishing email, a WeTransfer link, a VHD file, an LNK shortcut, a PowerShell file, and a malicious DLL. Sophos noted that attackers have used archives and disk-image formats to smuggle code past gateway scanners and execute it. Sophos’ 2022 account is evidence that this delivery technique has been used, not evidence of what was inside this particular VHDX.

It can be made to look like a spreadsheet without being one. A Windows shortcut, usually an LNK file, has metadata such as an icon and target fields. The icon and displayed name are not proof of the file type or the action its target would take. MITRE ATT&CK’s technique T1027.012, LNK Icon Smuggling, explains that attackers may abuse shortcut metadata to disguise actions; MITRE states, “Adversaries may abuse this LNK metadata to download malicious payloads.” MITRE ATT&CK: LNK Icon Smuggling

Microsoft’s general WinLNK threat description likewise explains that a shortcut can be made to resemble a text document or PDF while targeting PowerShell or Command Prompt with obfuscated arguments. That illustrates why appearance is unreliable; it does not establish the target, arguments, payload, or result of the shortcut in this incident. Microsoft’s WinLNK description
Is a VHDX file dangerous?
A VHDX is a file format, not a verdict about its contents. A disk image can contain harmless files, malicious files, or a shortcut designed to launch commands. The meaningful questions are what this specific image contained and whether anyone mounted it or opened anything inside it. Do not mount it again or click through its contents to investigate yourself.

In a work environment, unusual attachment requests should be verified through a known channel, such as a previously established HR contact method—not by replying to the suspicious message or using contact details it supplies. Microsoft recommends checking suspicious communications through known channels and flags urgent requests to open attachments as a warning sign. Microsoft: Protect yourself from phishing
What should I do after opening a fake HR spreadsheet?
- Stop interacting with the attachment. Do not open the VHDX, mount it, click the shortcut, or forward the files to colleagues. Preserve the original email and attachment for your response team.
- Contact your IT administrator or security team promptly. Use your organization’s normal reporting channel or a known contact method, not links or phone numbers in the email. Microsoft advises work users to contact their IT administrator after a suspected phishing attack. Microsoft’s phishing guidance
- Give IT a precise account of what happened. Say whether you only received the email, downloaded the VHDX, mounted it, opened the shortcut, saw a command window or security alert, or entered a password. Include approximate times and the device used. If you are unsure whether a step occurred, say so rather than guessing.
- Follow the response team’s instructions. Avoid deleting the email or files, running cleanup tools, or trying to inspect the disk image unless responders tell you to. Those actions may complicate investigation or remove useful evidence.
- If you entered credentials, tell IT which account and when. Microsoft’s general guidance says to change passwords associated with accounts after a suspected phishing attack. Coordinate the reset with your organization, particularly if the account is managed at work, and use a trusted device and official sign-in page. Microsoft’s phishing guidance
- Report the fraudulent message through the appropriate channel. Use your company’s phishing-reporting process if it has one; Microsoft also recommends reporting suspicious messages through the relevant channel. Keep the original message available to IT. Microsoft’s phishing guidance
What should IT establish after someone clicked it?
A report should trigger an investigation, not an assumption that the device is compromised. Microsoft’s phishing playbook emphasizes identifying the message, scoping affected users, assessing user interaction and credential exposure, and investigating downstream activity. For this attachment pattern, responders should establish:
- Whether the email reached other recipients and whether they downloaded or opened the attachment.
- Whether the VHDX was downloaded, mounted, or accessed, and what files it contained.
- Whether the shortcut was opened; if so, what target and arguments it specified and what process tree followed.
- Whether processes made network connections or created persistence indicators.
- Whether the user entered credentials, which account was involved, and whether identity activity followed.
- Whether endpoints or accounts show signs of malware execution, data access or exfiltration, or movement to other systems.
These are checks, not confirmed outcomes. Microsoft lists credential compromise, malware execution, data exfiltration, and lateral movement as possible consequences of successful phishing, but none should be attributed to this case without evidence from the investigation.
