Moving selected Linux workloads from Proxmox virtual machines to LXC containers can reduce runtime overhead and simplify resource use, but it does not guarantee a speed boost. Containers share the host’s Linux kernel, while VMs provide stronger isolation. Whether the change is worthwhile depends on the workload, trust boundary, operating system, and tolerance for migration downtime. No workload measurements or hardware details are available here, so a specific performance improvement cannot be claimed.
Why move a workload from a VM to an LXC?
Proxmox VE supports both KVM virtual machines and LXC-based containers. A VM runs a separate guest operating system; an LXC uses the host Linux kernel. Proxmox describes container runtime costs as usually negligible, but that is a general architectural observation—not a measured result for any particular project. It does not establish that a given workload will run faster after migration. Proxmox Container Toolkit documentation
For a demanding project, judge the move with a before-and-after comparison on the same host. Record the project’s actual work rate and resource use under representative conditions, rather than relying on the word “heavy” or on a general claim about containers. Without details such as the workload, host hardware, Proxmox version, and measurement method, there is no responsible way to report a speedup.
When an LXC is a reasonable fit
Consider an LXC when the project can run on Linux, you control the software and its dependencies, and sharing the host kernel fits your security requirements. A container remains managed within Proxmox rather than becoming an unmanaged process: Proxmox documents integration with cluster, firewall, high-availability, and storage management. Which storage features are available depends on the backing storage. Proxmox Container Toolkit documentation

That integration can be useful in a homelab or server environment where centralized management matters. It is a management benefit, not evidence that an LXC will be faster or easier for every application.
What you give up compared with a VM
Isolation
Proxmox states, “In general, full virtual machines provide better isolation.” Because an LXC shares the host kernel, it is not equivalent to placing the workload in a separate guest operating system. Proxmox recommends QEMU VMs for application containers when stronger host isolation is desired. Keep a VM when the workload is untrusted, exposed to hostile input, or otherwise needs a firmer boundary from the host. Proxmox Container Toolkit documentation

Guest operating system
Proxmox Containers support Linux distributions, not non-Linux guest operating systems such as Windows or FreeBSD. A workload that requires one of those systems must remain in a suitable VM. Proxmox Container Toolkit documentation
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsLive migration
A running Proxmox container cannot be live-migrated. Restart migration stops it, moves it, and starts it again, so plan for downtime. If continuous availability during host migration is a requirement, this limitation may rule out an LXC for that workload. Proxmox Container Toolkit documentation

How to decide project by project
There is no need to convert every VM just because some projects work well in containers. Evaluate each workload against these criteria:
- Choose an LXC candidate: it runs on Linux, you trust its code and dependencies, host-kernel sharing is acceptable, and a stop-and-start migration window is manageable.
- Keep a VM: you need Windows or FreeBSD, stronger isolation, or live migration while the workload continues running.
- Verify storage needs: confirm that the features your project relies on are supported by the storage backing the container.
- Measure the claimed benefit: compare the same workload on the same host under comparable conditions, and state the method and environment before attributing a performance change to the move.
Proxmox’s VE Administration Guide covers the platform’s VM and container management context; consult it alongside the container toolkit documentation when planning an environment change.
