TROLLHEIM: GNOMES is an unreleased survival-crafting game in which three-inch-tall gnomes rebuild their lives in a procedurally grown Nordic forest. Trollheim and Off-leash Interactive are developing it for solo play and online co-op for up to eight players. The Steam listing currently says “Coming soon” and gives no fixed release date.
Its defining idea is not simply fighting through a wilderness. The Dark Forest is inhabited by Väsen—trolls, faeries, sirens and other beings—that can be avoided, calmed, befriended or fought. That relationship-focused design grows out of a childhood-fairytale setting and a story about displaced gnomes searching for home.
What is TROLLHEIM: GNOMES?
You play as one of the Sprýg Gnomes, driven from Midgård after a corrupted Oden destroys their home. The survivors must reunite in the Dark Forest, gathering materials, crafting tools, finding shelter and enduring cold, hunger and hidden threats.

Its announced systems combine resource gathering, construction, exploration and relationships with the forest’s supernatural inhabitants. The setting draws on Nordic folk belief, and the creators describe a larger narrative intended to extend through books, collectibles, music, games and other formats.

Why the “concept of home” quote matters
The game’s emotional premise comes from filmmaker and Trollheim narrative-universe founder Björne Larson. Describing the inspiration, Larson said: “When my parents divorced, I lost the concept of home, until my grandmother took me into these forests we grew up in, telling me about the gnomes and trolls and fairies who lived there and thrived there.”
Larson added: “Ultimately the forest made me feel at home, and cared for.” That idea explains why the forest is presented as more than a hostile map. Rebuilding a dwelling, learning the local Väsen and finding safe routes through the undergrowth are parts of the same homecoming story.

Survive at miniature scale
The player character is roughly three inches tall. Ordinary forest objects become landmarks and hazards: oversized roots, mushrooms, streams, berries, fungus, boulders, twigs and fallen litter shape movement and shelter. A brook can be a major crossing, while a piece of moss can provide concealment.

The announced survival pressures are practical rather than abstract. You gather materials, craft tools, manage hunger and protect yourself from cold while watching for threats that may be difficult to see from ground level.
Build homes that fit the landscape
Construction is designed around hiding in, rather than clearing, the environment. Plans described for the game include bridges, moss-covered structures, treetop dwellings, hollow-log homes and shelters beside lakes. The briefing also highlights camouflage among litter, moss and mold, so a good base may be one that disappears into its surroundings instead of dominating them.
Explore and choose equipment
TROLLHEIM: GNOMES does not announce character classes. Equipment and crafting choices are intended to shape how each player contributes, allowing different roles to emerge from what people make and carry rather than from a fixed class selection.

Can you befriend the trolls?
The developers’ most distinctive promise is that Väsen are neighbours as much as enemies. You may fight, evade, calm or offer gifts to them, depending on the situation and your approach.

One reported example has players restraining a troll, soothing it with flute music and offering stew. That scenario illustrates the intended design better than a simple “non-lethal option”: interaction, preparation and empathy can change an encounter’s outcome. The exact range of behaviours may change during development, so the example should be read as an announced direction rather than a guaranteed quest sequence.
How the world mixes procedural growth with authored detail
The Steam description presents biomes as procedurally shaped or grown, which should support replayable routes and varied resource locations. At the same time, the team stresses close observation of real woodland details—canopy scale, brooks, lakes, fungus, berries, twigs and stones. The goal is a world that can vary from one playthrough to another while still feeling deliberately composed at ground level.

Is Trollheim like Grounded or Valheim?
If you have played either, the shared foundation is familiar: collect resources, craft equipment, construct a base, explore and manage survival needs. Trollheim’s announced identity is narrower and more specific in three ways:
- Scale: you are a tiny gnome navigating the forest floor, not a human-sized adventurer.
- Folklore: the setting is built around Nordic folk belief and a Dark Forest populated by Väsen.
- Coexistence: encounters can be resolved through calming, gifting, befriending or concealment, not only through damage and loot.
That makes it adjacent to established survival-crafting games rather than a direct substitute for any one of them. Its final depth, balance and variety cannot be judged until the unreleased build is available.

Trollheim and Off-leash Interactive are the named developers. The team’s background is part of the project’s pitch:

Those credits indicate experience across large-scale action development, publishing and stylised game production, but they do not establish a budget, team size, performance target or commercial forecast. No independently published sales, audience or market statistics are available for the unreleased game.
Release status, Early Access and playtests
Steam lists TROLLHEIM: GNOMES as “Coming soon” without a fixed date. The developers’ current best guess is that Early Access would last at least 12–18 months. That is an estimate, not a schedule.
The listing also warns that features, biomes, crafting depth, supported languages, Steam features and Väsen behaviours may expand during development. Playtest applications have been reported as open, but access and timing can change. Anyone following the project should treat all pre-release systems and dates as provisional.
