Google Docs can now open, edit, comment on and share Markdown files without converting them into Google Docs files. For Obsidian users, that means the same .md note can stay in Markdown form while a team reads it in a familiar Docs workspace, adds comments and uses eligible Gemini features to develop the text. The rollout began October 5, 2026, and Google says it may take up to 15 days to reach every account.
What Google Docs changed for Obsidian users
Google Workspace announced native Markdown-file support on October 5, 2026. Users can upload a .md or .markdown file to Drive, open it in Google Docs, and work on it while the file remains Markdown. Docs displays an .md label rather than silently creating a separate Google Docs copy.
That matters because an Obsidian vault is made of ordinary Markdown text files. A note can leave the vault temporarily for review or collaboration, then return to Obsidian or another Markdown editor. You no longer have to export a note, convert it, and reconcile two different documents just to get comments from people who prefer Docs.
Google describes the feature as a way for users and agents to collaborate without writing raw syntax, performing manual conversions or giving up Docs real-time editing and commenting tools. It is best understood as a collaboration and drafting layer alongside Obsidian, not as a replacement for an Obsidian vault.

How to open an Obsidian note in Google Docs
- Upload the file. In Google Drive, upload the original
.mdor.markdownnote. Keep a local or backed-up copy of the vault before making collaborative edits. - Open it in Docs. Open the uploaded file with Google Docs. Google says the file remains Markdown and shows an
.mdlabel. - Review the rendered note. Headings, links, tables and common emphasis are displayed as readable content instead of raw Markdown syntax. Check important links, embeds and unusual formatting before inviting others.
- Collaborate. Use Docs sharing controls, comments and real-time editing for the review or drafting process. Give collaborators the least access they need, especially when the note contains private material.
- Return to your local workflow. Reopen the Markdown file in Obsidian or another Markdown tool when you need linked-note navigation, local search or vault-specific features.
What Docs adds to a Markdown workflow
Real-time review without a format handoff
People who do not use Obsidian can read and comment on the same Markdown file in the Docs interface. That is useful for editorial review, project briefs, meeting notes and AI working files where several people need to suggest changes. The file-type label helps distinguish this workflow from a one-way export into a separate document.
Gemini in the same workspace
Gemini in Docs can draft and refine writing using information available from Drive, Chat, Gmail and the web. Google also documents a feature that can match the writing style of an existing file when the account has an eligible Google Workspace or Google AI plan. This puts the assistant next to the shared draft instead of requiring a separate copy-and-paste cycle.

Opening a Markdown note in Docs does not establish that Gemini automatically indexes an entire Obsidian vault. Treat the individual file, its sharing permissions and any files you explicitly provide as the available context. Confirm your organization’s data and access policies before placing sensitive notes in a shared workspace.
Markdown conversion tools are still available
Native editing is different from Google’s existing conversion options. On the web, Docs can paste Markdown as formatted document content, copy Docs content as Markdown, export a Doc as .md, and import Markdown through File > Open > Upload. Those tools are useful when you deliberately want a Google Docs document or a new Markdown export; native opening is the option when retaining the original Markdown file is the priority.

What is preserved, and what can be lost
Common Markdown structures such as headings, links, italics, bold and strikethrough are supported. Native support does not provide full Obsidian feature parity, however. Google’s Help Center warns that several Docs or web-only features do not survive Markdown editing.
- Smart chips may become ordinary text or links.
- HTML formatting from the web may become plain text.
- Font colors, highlights and text alignment are removed when editing a Markdown file.
- The available documentation does not establish automatic vault-wide indexing, preservation of Obsidian plugins, graph views or behavior for every embedded asset.
Use Docs for the parts of a note that need shared reading and writing. Before editing a complex note, make a backup and inspect plugin-generated sections, transclusions, images and other embeds in your own vault. Docs version history can restore an earlier state if a formatting change causes a problem, but version history is not a substitute for a separate backup.

Availability and rollout timing
Google says native Markdown support is available to Google Workspace customers and personal Google accounts. The rollout is gradual and can take up to 15 days from the October 5, 2026 announcement. On October 16, an account that does not yet show the feature may simply be waiting for rollout rather than misconfigured.

A practical way to use the feature safely
Keep Obsidian as the source of linked knowledge
Maintain the vault, local links and plugin-dependent material in Obsidian. Send a focused note or draft to Drive when another person needs to review it or when the work benefits from Docs comments.
Use a review copy for complex notes
For notes containing HTML, colors, embeds or plugin-generated content, duplicate the file first. Compare the edited Markdown with the backup before replacing the vault version.
Let Gemini refine, not silently redefine, the source
Use Gemini to draft or revise selected passages, then read the resulting Markdown and check links, headings and special syntax before bringing it back into the vault. Keep permissions narrow when Drive, Chat or Gmail information could be incorporated into the draft.

What this means for AI-file workflows
The useful change is not that Google Docs has become an Obsidian clone. It is that a plain-text AI note can now cross into a widely shared editing environment without an obligatory format conversion. Obsidian remains the stronger home for local, linked and plugin-dependent knowledge; Docs is the more convenient surface for comments, coordinated editing and Gemini-assisted drafting. Moving between them works best when you preserve the original file, understand which formatting is disposable and review every complex embed before syncing changes back.
