If Microsoft Copilot suddenly stops a conversation after five messages, do not assume that you have discovered a permanent account restriction—or that you are using GitHub Copilot. The incident behind this commonly repeated claim concerned Microsoft Copilot, formerly Bing Chat. A Microsoft Q&A user reported on January 6, 2024 that their limit had changed from 30 messages to 5. They also said that clearing the cache and changing browsers had not fixed it.
The important distinction is that the available evidence describes a historical service change and conflicting explanations. It does not establish a fixed Copilot limit for August 7, 2026.
What the original report actually said
The original question was posted in Microsoft Q&A under “Bing | Other”, not GitHub Copilot. The page is now locked, but the discussion records these details:
- The user had previously been able to send 30 messages.
- The limit appeared to drop to 5 messages.
- Clearing the browser cache did not help.
- Changing browsers did not help.
An independent advisor later suggested that five messages applied to people who were not signed in and recommended opening copilot.microsoft.com. That explanation was not confirmed by the thread. Several other participants said they were signed in and still saw a five-message limit, including while using both Bing and Copilot.

Why the “five messages means you are signed out” explanation is unsafe
Being signed in is worth checking, but a five-message warning is not reliable proof that you are signed out. The Microsoft discussion includes reports from signed-in users who encountered the same restriction. A Microsoft advisor’s answer is also not the same as a published Microsoft policy document.
Use sign-in status as one troubleshooting check, not as a diagnosis:
- Open https://copilot.microsoft.com directly.
- Check whether the page shows your Microsoft account as signed in.
- Start a new conversation and note the exact warning after the limit is reached.
- For comparison, test https://bing.com in the same account.
Testing both addresses can show whether the behavior is limited to one access surface. It cannot prove that Bing and Copilot share one quota.

Where the 30-versus-5 browser claim came from
A February 14, 2024 answer in the Microsoft thread repeated a browser-based explanation attributed to Android Authority:
| Browser | Historical claim | Prompt length stated in that answer |
|---|---|---|
| Microsoft Edge | 30 messages per conversation | Up to 4,000 characters |
| Chrome or Safari | 5 messages per conversation | Up to 2,000 characters |
That table should be treated as historical reporting, not as a current Microsoft specification. The same Android Authority article uses inconsistent wording: one section describes the figures as limits per conversation, while its FAQ describes them as limits per day. Because those descriptions conflict, neither “five per day” nor “five per conversation” is definitive for the original incident.
The article also says Microsoft had changed the limit and that it could change again. It does not establish that Edge always provides 30 messages or that Chrome and Safari always provide five—especially not as of August 7, 2026.

What to do when Copilot stops accepting messages
- Record the warning. Copy the exact wording, and note the date, time, account, browser, and website. “Limit reached,” “start a new conversation,” and a sign-in prompt indicate different conditions.
- Confirm the product. Make sure the page is Microsoft Copilot or Bing Chat rather than GitHub Copilot. GitHub Copilot has separate products, accounts, and usage rules.
- Check the account. Open Copilot directly and verify that the intended Microsoft account is active. If you use multiple Microsoft accounts, an account switch can make the behavior appear inconsistent.
- Try the other Microsoft access point. Compare
copilot.microsoft.comwithbing.com. Record whether the same account and the same conversation behave differently. - Test another browser without treating it as a fix. Edge, Chrome, and Safari were associated with different historical figures, but browser testing alone does not establish the current policy. A different result may reflect a session, account, rollout, or surface-specific condition.
- Do not overinterpret cache clearing. The original user reported that clearing the cache did not restore 30 messages. You can still retry in a private window or after signing out and back in, but those actions are troubleshooting experiments—not guaranteed quota resets.
- Separate a conversation limit from a daily limit. Start a new conversation only if the warning or interface tells you to do so. If new conversations also stop after the same number of messages, record that fact instead of assuming the limit is per conversation.
What is not established
The available sources do not verify a current fixed number of Copilot messages, a reset interval, an account-plan rule, a universal browser rule, or a quota dashboard. They also do not establish that the Bing website, Edge, Windows 11, and Microsoft 365 apps all draw from one shared allowance. These surfaces have been mentioned in connection with Copilot access, but that does not demonstrate a common quota.

Bottom line for this Copilot problem
The five-message behavior was a real historical report involving Microsoft Copilot/Bing Chat, but the cause was not conclusively identified. “You are signed out” is contradicted by signed-in users in the same discussion, and the 30-versus-5 browser rule came from a third-party report and a community answer—not current Microsoft documentation. As of August 7, 2026, the supplied evidence cannot confirm a current Copilot limit or reset schedule. Verify the account, compare the two official web addresses, capture the exact warning, and treat any limit as a service rule that may vary by surface or change over time.

FAQ
Is this a GitHub Copilot limit?
No. The cited incident concerned Microsoft Copilot, formerly Bing Chat. The original Microsoft Q&A question was posted under “Bing | Other.” GitHub Copilot has separate products and usage rules.
Does five messages mean I am signed out?
Not reliably. An advisor suggested that explanation, but several users in the same Microsoft discussion said they were signed in and still saw a five-message limit.

That was a historical claim reported in early 2024. It was not established as a current Microsoft policy, and the cited third-party article inconsistently describes the figures as per conversation and per day.

Can clearing the cache reset the Copilot limit?
There is no verified evidence that it does. The original user said clearing the cache and changing browsers did not restore the previous 30-message behavior.
Is the limit five messages per day or per conversation?
The available sources do not settle that question. One historical account says per conversation, while another section of the same third-party article says per day.
Where can I check Copilot?
Use the official web addresses identified in the evidence: https://copilot.microsoft.com and https://bing.com. Compare the behavior while using the intended Microsoft account, and record the exact warning.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: A sudden five-message Copilot limit was reported in January 2024, but neither sign-out status nor browser choice provides a dependable current explanation. The historical 30-versus-5 figures are not verified limits for August 7, 2026, and no confirmed reset command or quota dashboard is established.
