Dan Houser reportedly called his work on Max Payne 3 a failure, not because he disliked the finished game, but because he believed its design and writing did not connect with enough players. The comments, attributed to an IGN30 Icons Series interview, survive here only through a Reddit reproduction, so they should be read as Houser’s personal assessment—not verified sales data or proof of universal audience opinion.
What Houser reportedly said
A surfaced post in r/maxpayne reproduces remarks attributed to Dan Houser speaking to IGN for its IGN30 Icons Series. In the excerpt, Houser says: “So I got that completely wrong,” followed by, “I failed. My bit was not a success.”
Those statements frame the result as a responsibility he personally accepts. The passage does not say that every player disliked Max Payne 3, and it does not supply sales totals, review averages, budgets or other performance figures. Houser explicitly acknowledges that some people liked the game while many others did not.
Why the game’s structure mattered to him
A deliberately linear production
Houser contrasts Max Payne 3 with an open-world project. He describes it as a linear game with a more structured writing process, saying that this made the experience different from writing a game in which players can move through a much less predetermined world.

That structure appears to have been part of the appeal for him. The quoted passage describes the game as feeling like a “12-hour movie,” with tightly controlled progression and scripted presentation. “12-hour movie” is Houser’s metaphor for the experience, not a verified playtime measurement.
Digital-noir presentation
Houser also says he enjoyed the design work, including words appearing on screen and other visual choices. He characterizes the intended result as a “really cool digital noir experience.” His criticism therefore targets the game’s reception and the decisions behind it, rather than claiming that the team produced an unfinished or technically broken product.

What “failure” means in this account
In the reproduced wording, Houser says the game was “beautifully made” but “wasn’t as successful as it should have been.” The available passage gives no definition of success beyond that qualitative judgment. It does not establish whether he means commercial performance, audience response, the fit with expectations around the series, or a combination of those factors.

What the excerpt can—and cannot—prove
- It can show: Houser’s stated regret, his preference for the game’s linear and cinematic design, and his belief that the result did not reach its intended audience.
- It cannot show: a confirmed sales figure, a review-score average, a budget shortfall, or a statistically measured consensus that players hated the game.
- It does not support: a performance comparison with another Rockstar title, because no such figures or comparison appear in the reproduced passage.
The wording “the consensus at the time was that people hated it” is presented as Houser’s recollection. Without the full interview or supporting audience data, it should not be converted into a universal claim about reception.
Why the source qualification matters
The quotation currently available is a secondary reproduction in a Reddit search result dated October 13, 2026. The original IGN page was not retrieved, and the Reddit post itself could not be opened after a cache miss. That means the surrounding question-and-answer context, exact publication date of the interview and any qualifications in the original transcript remain unverified.

Until the IGN interview is checked directly, the safest reading is narrow: Houser looked back on his role in Max Payne 3, liked the game’s controlled digital-noir design, and judged that his creative decisions had not produced the level of success he expected. Calling the game a failure is his retrospective conclusion, not an independently established industry statistic.

The practical takeaway for readers
Houser’s comments are most useful as an example of how a creator can separate craft from outcome. He presents the game as carefully made and personally enjoyable while still accepting that its structure, tone or writing choices failed to connect as intended. The passage leaves open whether that disconnect came from the linear format, the absence of Lake’s voice, audience expectations, marketing, commercial results or several factors together.

That distinction also explains why the headline can be misleading if read too broadly. “Dan Houser considers Max Payne 3 a failure” accurately summarizes his self-criticism as reproduced, but it does not establish that the game objectively failed by every measure or that audiences shared one unanimous verdict.
