A local language model can turn a large Steam backlog into a conversational shortlist, but “better than Steam” depends on the test. In this experiment, the useful difference was control: I could specify a mood, exclude games I had finished, ask for titles I already owned, and require an explanation for every pick. That is not proof of higher recommendation accuracy than Steam’s system; it is a different kind of recommendation experience.
What I actually gave the model
“My entire library” can describe several very different datasets. A list of owned titles is enough to prevent recommendations for games you cannot play, but it does not tell the model what you enjoyed, abandoned or recently completed. A richer setup can include playtime, genres, tags, completion status and a free-text mood prompt.

The workflow described by the Gamekeeper project reads a local Steam installation, filters out non-game software and resolves AppIDs to game names. Other tools synchronize a library through Steam’s Web API and enrich it with game metadata. Those approaches should not be described as equivalent: one starts with local files, while another may need an API key, a public game-details profile or an internet connection for metadata.

- Build the inventory. Export or scan the library so the model receives owned game names and, where available, playtime, tags and completion information.
- Separate ingestion from inference. Local model generation can run on your computer even when library synchronization or metadata retrieval uses the network. Record which steps are offline instead of calling the whole workflow offline.
- State a decision, not just a genre. Prompts such as “I have 90 minutes and want a tense investigation with minimal combat” produce more useful constraints than “recommend an RPG.”
- Add exclusions. Tell the model to omit games you finished, games you recently played, multiplayer-only titles, early-access projects or anything requiring hardware you do not have.
- Demand reasons. Ask for the matching tags, expected session length and a caveat when the model is uncertain. Explanations make a weak suggestion easier to reject.
- Log the result. Save the prompt, the shortlist and which game you actually launched. Without this record, “better” becomes a memory of a few pleasant surprises.
Why it can feel better than Steam
It optimizes for the question you asked
Storefront recommendation systems generally optimize for broad engagement and similarity signals. A local chat interface can optimize for a one-off situation: a quiet game after work, a short campaign before a trip or something unlike the last five games you played.

It can surface games you already own
Backlog selection is a narrower problem than discovering a new purchase. By restricting the candidate set to owned titles, the model can solve “what should I play next?” rather than returning another shop page.
It explains the trade-off
A useful answer can say that a game matches the requested mood but has a long tutorial, dated controls or a demanding opening. Steam’s tiles and ranking signals rarely provide that personalized reasoning in one place.

Where the claim breaks down
No independent head-to-head accuracy result establishes that a local LLM outperforms Steam. A 2023 academic abstract describes a Steam recommender using user-item interactions and producing a top-five list, but it does not test this local workflow against Valve’s recommendations. Project documentation is evidence of features and configuration, not an audited benchmark.

Local does not always mean offline
Gamekeeper describes an optional local AI chat layer and an offline Taste Engine, while also documenting Steam Web API and profile requirements for parts of its data flow. SuggestMe describes local storage but uses the internet for library synchronization and metadata. The privacy question therefore has at least three parts: where the library is read, where metadata is fetched and where inference runs.
One project’s own statement is: “All data stays on your machine. No cloud services, no telemetry.” Treat that as the project’s claim, not independent privacy verification. Check network calls and permissions yourself before adding a Steam account or API key.

These are project-published configuration estimates, not universal requirements or performance benchmarks. A smaller model may be sufficient for filtering and ranking; a larger one may produce more coherent explanations but costs more memory and time. You do not need a particular graphics card unless the model and quantization you choose require it.

Alternatives to a direct LLM chat
Gamekeeper says its Discover feed covers approximately 60,000 Steam games and reports testing on a 571-game library. Its offline Taste Engine is aimed at repeatable preference scoring, with optional local-LLM conversation layered on top. SuggestMe offers configurable recommendation modes and filters. These tools optimize different goals: broad discovery, deterministic filtering, conversational explanation or privacy-conscious local storage.
Compare them on the dimensions that affect your decision:
- Candidate set: owned games only, or the wider Steam catalog.
- Signals: ownership, playtime, tags, mood, completion and exclusions.
- Control: free-form prompts versus fixed filters and scoring.
- Explainability: a written rationale versus a ranked feed.
- Data path: local files, API synchronization, metadata downloads and inference location.
- Cost: setup time, API access and the computer memory needed by the selected model.
How to judge whether it is actually better
Run the same evaluation for both systems over several sessions. Score each shortlist for relevance to the stated mood, whether the game is owned, discovery of an overlooked title, variety, explanation quality and the effort required to obtain the result. Track launches and abandoned games rather than counting one memorable surprise.

The honest conclusion is narrower than the headline: a local LLM can be better at translating a personal, moment-specific request into a playable backlog shortlist. Steam may remain better for frictionless catalog discovery and store-wide popularity signals. Which one wins depends on whether your priority is control and privacy or zero-setup recommendations.
