An unfamiliar device name in your router’s list does not, by itself, mean a stranger is using your Wi-Fi. Phones and other devices can use private Wi-Fi addresses that make them appear under unexpected or changing names. To identify a smart TV or another client, compare the router’s connection details with the address shown in that device’s settings, then secure the network if an entry remains unexplained.

Why an unknown device label is not proof of an intruder

A router has to identify clients from the information they provide, and its app may display a hostname or network address rather than a familiar product name. TP-Link says its Deco system identifies connected devices through their hostname or MAC address. If that information is unfamiliar, the router may label a known device as unknown.

Privacy features add another complication. Apple devices can use a private Wi-Fi address for each network, and that address may rotate. As a result, a familiar phone or tablet can look different in the router’s list over time. An unfamiliar label is a reason to check, not a verdict about who is connected.

How to identify the TV in your router’s device list

  1. Open your router or mesh system’s app or administration page and find the connected-device or client list. For each entry, note the displayed name and, if available, its MAC address, IP address, and connection status. Router interfaces show different fields, so record only what yours provides.

  2. On the TV, open its network information or support/about screen and find its network address. For Samsung TVs in the U.S., Samsung’s support instructions point to Settings > Support > About this TV or Contact Samsung. Menu names can vary by model and software version.

Xixian WiFi Signal Analyzer TFT Color Screen Aluminum Alloy Casing 2.4G 5G WiFi Usage Analyzer for Network Optimization
    • [IMPROVED WIFI PERFORMANCE] Check signal strength and adjust your WiFi to a less crowded frequency for enhanced communication quality.
    • [VIVID COLOR DISPLAY] 2.4 inch TFT screen allows for easy signal viewing with battery level indicator for convenience.
    • [LONG BATTERY LIFE] Built-in 750mAh li battery provides up to 4 hours of standby time, perfect for on-the-go use.
    • [CHARGING CONVENIENCE] Equipped with a TYPE C interface for easy and fast charging, with a charging time of 1.5 hours.
    • [DURABLE MATERIAL] Made of aluminum alloy casing for a sturdy and long-lasting WiFi analyzer.
  3. Compare the TV’s address with the router’s client details. A matching address is a stronger way to identify the TV than guessing from a generic name or manufacturer label. If the address does not match, check that you are viewing the TV’s Wi-Fi connection details, not an address for another network interface.

  4. Repeat the check for other household devices before deciding that an entry is unauthorized. Phones, tablets, computers, streaming boxes, speakers, cameras, printers, and smart-home hubs may all appear in the list, as can visitors’ devices.

How to work through the rest of the list

Check devices one at a time rather than relying on the router’s labels. Private or randomized addresses can make a known device hard to recognize, and a device may appear under a name that tells you little. Where possible, compare the address shown in that device’s own network settings with the router’s entry.

Once you have positively identified a client, rename it in the router app if that feature is available. The name can make future checks easier, but it is not a permanent identity: TP-Link notes that a renamed client may appear unknown again if its private address changes.

If one client remains unexplained after checking the household devices and any guests’ devices, use your router maker’s instructions to manage it. TP-Link describes blocking a confirmed unknown client in the Deco app; other router controls and labels differ. Avoid blocking entries simply because their names look unfamiliar, since that can disconnect your own equipment.

What to do if a device still looks suspicious

If you cannot account for a client, or you suspect that someone has access to your network, strengthen the Wi-Fi and router settings. The FTC recommends using WPA3 Personal or WPA2 Personal, keeping router software up to date, and changing default router credentials. A strong, unique administrator password helps protect the router’s settings; change the Wi-Fi password as well if it may have been shared too broadly.

  • Use current Wi-Fi security: Select WPA3 Personal or WPA2 Personal if your router and devices support it.
  • Update the router: Install available software or firmware updates using the manufacturer’s process.
  • Replace default credentials: Set a strong, unique password for router administration, and review who knows the Wi-Fi password.
  • Separate visitors: Use a guest network, if available, to keep guests’ devices off the primary network.
  • Review optional services: The FTC suggests considering disabling remote management, WPS, and UPnP. Check what each setting supports in your home before turning it off, since devices or features that depend on it may stop working.

FTC guidance: How to secure your home Wi-Fi network.

Unknown network devices and TV tracking are separate questions

A router’s device list can help you see which clients are connected; it does not establish that the TV scanned other devices or collected information about them. If your concern is what data the TV itself collects, review its tracking and privacy settings and adjust them to your preferences. The FTC’s advice is general, and the exact setting names and menu locations depend on the TV.
