When Android Auto will not connect, only charges, refuses a second car, or drops during wireless setup, the cause is usually one of four fixable problems: a bad data cable, a stalled car receiver, an old pairing record, or an incomplete wireless handshake. Work through these fixes in order, starting with the physical connection and ending with wireless setup.
1. The phone connects but Android Auto only charges
A USB port can supply power without carrying the data connection Android Auto needs. The phone, cable and car receiver must all support Android Auto; the presence of a USB socket does not prove compatibility.
Use a short data cable
Replace the existing lead with a high-quality USB-C Android Auto data cable shorter than 1 metre. Do not connect through a USB hub or extension. Google also recommends trying the cable supplied with the phone. A cable can continue charging reliably after its data conductors or connectors have become intermittent.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Unplug the phone from the car.
- Inspect both connectors for dirt, looseness or visible damage.
- Connect the phone directly to the car with the short data cable.
- Unlock the phone and accept any Android Auto permissions shown on screen.
Google’s Android Auto Help says that if Android Auto worked properly before and no longer does, replacing the USB cable will likely fix the issue. That is a troubleshooting recommendation, not a guarantee for every vehicle or phone.

When a new cable does not help
- Confirm the specific vehicle or aftermarket receiver is Android Auto-compatible; a charging port alone is not sufficient.
- Try another compatible USB port if the vehicle has more than one.
- Remove any adapter, splitter or extension from the connection.
- Test the phone with another known-compatible car, if available, to separate a phone problem from a vehicle problem.
2. The receiver is powered but does not launch Android Auto
If the infotainment screen is on but Android Auto never appears, first treat the receiver as a stalled computer rather than assuming the phone is at fault.
Restart the car’s infotainment system
- Park safely and disconnect the phone.
- Turn the infotainment system off using the vehicle’s normal power control.
- Wait for the system to shut down completely, then restart it.
- Check the system settings and make sure Android Auto is enabled.
- Reconnect the phone directly with the tested data cable.
Menus differ by vehicle, so the Android Auto toggle may be under phone projection, smartphone integration or connectivity. Consult the vehicle or receiver manual if the label is not obvious.

Check aftermarket receiver firmware
For an aftermarket Pioneer or Kenwood receiver, Google advises checking the manufacturer’s website for a firmware update. Apply only firmware intended for the exact model and follow the maker’s installation procedure. An update may improve compatibility, but Google’s guidance does not establish that a particular vehicle has a firmware defect.

3. A second or previously paired car will not connect
Android Auto stores a list of cars it has connected to. An old or corrupted entry can prevent a different vehicle from completing setup. Forgetting the list resets Android Auto’s stored car pairings; it does not erase the phone’s other Bluetooth devices.

Forget every stored car
- Unplug the phone from the car.
- Open Android Auto settings on the phone.
- Tap Connected devices, then Connection preferences, then Android Auto.
- Open Previously connected cars.
- Open the menu and tap Forget all cars.
- Plug the phone into the intended car and complete pairing again.
Use this reset when a second car refuses to connect, when the phone keeps trying to use the wrong vehicle, or when a previously working pairing became stuck. You will need to authorize each car again afterward.
4. Wireless Android Auto will not pair or keeps disconnecting
Wireless Android Auto has two stages. Bluetooth pairing starts the relationship between the phone and car; Wi-Fi then carries the Android Auto connection. Both stages must complete, and the required phone, vehicle or supported aftermarket stereo must be compatible.

- Park the car, leave it in Park, and turn on the infotainment system.
- On the phone, enable Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and Location Services.
- Start Bluetooth pairing from the car’s infotainment screen and select the phone.
- Accept the Android Auto prompts and permissions on the phone and receiver.
- Keep the car stationary and wait for setup to finish before driving.
Do not disable Wi-Fi after Bluetooth pairing succeeds: Bluetooth initiates the session, while Wi-Fi is used for the wireless connection. Complete setup while parked and follow applicable driving laws; Android Auto’s safety guidance requires configuration before driving.

Check Android and hardware requirements
| Connection | Android requirement stated by Google | Other requirements |
|---|---|---|
| Wired | Generally Android 9 or later | Compatible vehicle or aftermarket receiver, plus a suitable USB data cable |
| Wireless | Android 11 or later for wireless connections and some newer vehicles | Compatible phone and vehicle or supported aftermarket stereo; Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and Location Services enabled |
Google’s current Android product information says Android Auto supports more than 500 vehicle models. That figure does not mean every trim, market or receiver supports every connection mode, so verify compatibility for the exact vehicle and phone combination.

If wireless pairing still fails
- Repeat the pairing process after using Forget all cars to remove stale Android Auto entries.
- Keep the phone near the receiver during the initial handshake.
- Turn Bluetooth and Wi-Fi off and on, then restart the receiver before trying again.
- Test a wired connection. If wired Android Auto works, the phone and vehicle are compatible and the remaining issue is specific to wireless setup, software or signal conditions.
- Check for receiver firmware updates, particularly on an aftermarket unit.
Wired or wireless: which troubleshooting path is better?
| Factor | Wired baseline | Wireless connection |
|---|---|---|
| Compatibility | Requires a compatible car or receiver, phone and USB data path | Requires compatible car or receiver, phone, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi support |
| Reliability | Usually easier to diagnose because the cable is a single replaceable variable | Can be affected by pairing state, wireless setup and software |
| Setup complexity | Plug in and authorize | Pair over Bluetooth, then allow Wi-Fi-based Android Auto setup to finish |
| Physical cable | Required; use a high-quality lead under 1 metre | Not required after setup |
| Accessory cost | May require replacing the data cable | May require a compatible wireless adapter, but confirm vehicle support before buying |
Use wired Android Auto as the diagnostic baseline when possible. It removes wireless pairing and Wi-Fi from the equation and makes a cable replacement quick and inexpensive. Choose wireless for convenience only after the phone, vehicle and Android version meet the stated requirements.
Quick Recap
Quick diagnosis checklist
- Only charging: replace the cable with a short, direct data cable; remove hubs and extensions.
- Receiver does not launch: restart the infotainment system, confirm Android Auto is enabled, and check exact-model firmware.
- Second car fails: use Android Auto’s Previously connected cars menu and tap Forget all cars.
- Wireless pairing fails: pair Bluetooth first, keep Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and Location Services on, and finish setup while parked.
- Nothing works: verify exact vehicle and receiver compatibility, Android version, permissions and software updates before replacing hardware.
