You can steer Google’s AI Overviews with more specific searches, follow-up questions, source preferences and format requests—but none of those steps verifies an answer. Google does not offer a general switch to turn AI Overviews off; to see text links without the overview in a results view, select the Web filter, which may be under More.
1. Search with a specific, conversational query
A short keyword query leaves more room for Google to guess what you mean. Describe the context and the exact information you want instead. For example, rather than searching only for a film title, ask which actor played a particular character in that film.
More detail can help the overview address the right question. It does not make the resulting answer reliable by itself; check the linked sources when accuracy matters.

2. Ask a follow-up question
If an overview gives an incomplete answer, use its follow-up option to clarify the point. PCMag’s Ruben Circelli described selecting Show More beneath an overview to continue in AI Mode, then asking a question that corrected an actor’s identity. The wording and availability of this interface can change.

A follow-up is still generated by AI. Treat it as a way to refine or investigate an answer, not as independent confirmation.
3. Put important context in your first search
Include the constraints that should shape the answer, such as your budget, location, intended use or performance goal. Circelli contrasted a generic search about whether an RTX 5090 was worth buying with a query that also specified a budget and performance target. The changed response illustrated the effect of query framing; it did not establish that either response was accurate.

State what you need up front rather than expecting a broad search to infer it. Then verify recommendations and factual claims against their cited material.
4. Name a source or set Preferred Sources
Name a source in the query
You can ask Google to find information from a particular publication by including its name in your search. Circelli reported that adding “PCMag” changed the sources shown in an overview. That may influence what appears, but it does not ensure that the overview uses only that publication or represents it correctly.

Choose Preferred Sources
Google’s Preferred Sources setting lets you select sources you want highlighted more often in AI Overviews and AI Mode. Open Search personalization, choose Source preferences, and select the sources you prefer. Google notes that sources that are not updated regularly may not be available.
Preferred Sources changes prominence, not authority: it does not guarantee that every overview will include a selected source or that an answer is correct.

Ask a focused follow-up about the specific claim you doubt, or run a more precise search. Circelli reported that a follow-up to an RTX 5090 overview produced a different price-related claim. A changed response is not proof that the new claim is right; compare the cited material directly, especially before acting on consequential information.

If an overview is inaccurate or otherwise problematic, Google Search Help says you can use the thumbs-up or thumbs-down controls, choose to report a problem, and add details. Google cautions: “Generative AI is experimental and can make mistakes.”

6. Request a format that is easier to inspect
Include a format in your query, such as “table” or “short answer,” if that would make the response easier to scan. You can also ask for a graph in a follow-up. These requests may steer the response, but Google Search is not guaranteed to return a particular layout.
Can you turn off AI Overviews?
No general off switch is available for AI Overviews. Google describes them as a core Search feature. To bypass an overview in a results view, select the Web filter for text-based links. Depending on your interface, you may need to open More to find it. This changes the results view; it does not disable AI Overviews globally.
