A small ESP32-S3 desk scoreboard can show live NFL matchups, scores and fantasy totals without a computer running beside it. The most direct reference build uses a Sunton ESP32-S3-8048S050C N16R8 board with a 5-inch, 800×480 capacitive touchscreen, Wi‑Fi and USB-C. After Wi‑Fi setup, it polls ESPN’s NFL scoreboard feed, refreshes scores every 60 seconds and rotates active games every eight seconds.
What the scoreboard actually does
The documented Schematik build is a self-contained desk appliance: the ESP32-S3 requests current NFL data, renders matchup information on its integrated display and cycles through games. Andrew Wolfe describes it as a live-game scoreboard on a bright 5-inch touchscreen powered by an ESP32-S3. No Raspberry Pi or separate display computer is required once network credentials are configured.
Its standard score-refresh interval is 60,000 milliseconds. That is appropriate for a quiet desk display, but it is not a play-by-play monitor. The interface rotates active games every eight seconds so several simultaneous matchups remain visible without user input.
How NFL data reaches the screen
The NFL feed used by this type of firmware is ESPN’s public site endpoint: site.api.espn.com/apis/site/v2/sports/football/nfl/scoreboard. A request returns the current scoreboard JSON, including scheduled events, competitors, scores and game status. Firmware converts those fields into the touchscreen layout.

Keep the provider code separate from the display code. If the endpoint changes its JSON fields, you should only need to update the parser and not redesign the screen, touch controls or enclosure.
Fantasy football is a separate integration
Fantasy totals do not come from the NFL scoreboard response. The documented mikemountain fantasy-football project supports Sleeper or Yahoo, each with its own authentication and data model. Its README describes live scoring windows beginning at approximately 8 p.m. Eastern Thursday, 1 p.m. Eastern Sunday and 8 p.m. Eastern Monday, with updates about every 20 seconds during those windows.

Sleeper integration
Sleeper is one supported provider in the example project. You still need to verify that its current endpoints and authentication behavior match the firmware version you deploy; the repository is an implementation example, not a guarantee of future API availability.

Yahoo mode requires selecting the Fantasy Sports API permission and enabling read access. Without that permission, authentication can succeed while league or matchup data remains unavailable. Store tokens outside the display layout code and provide a clear error state when authorization expires.

Choose the touchscreen when interaction and a compact footprint matter. Choose a matrix when viewing distance matters more than touch. A 60-second poll is reasonable for a low-maintenance desk; documented alternatives use three-second NFL polling or roughly 20-second fantasy polling when reducing visible lag is the priority.
Build it in a reliable sequence
- Select the display. For the closest one-board build, use the Sunton ESP32-S3-8048S050C N16R8 with its 800×480 LCD and capacitive touch panel. For a larger visual target, choose a 64×32 HUB75 matrix and budget for a separate power path.
- Prepare the firmware. Implement Wi‑Fi provisioning, the ESPN request, JSON parsing, screen rendering and game rotation as separate modules. Add fantasy-provider code as an optional layer rather than coupling it to NFL parsing.
- Configure network access. Enter Wi‑Fi credentials through the firmware’s setup flow. Confirm the board can obtain an IP address before troubleshooting API responses.
- Test the NFL endpoint. Request the scoreboard URL and verify that scheduled, in-progress and completed games all render correctly. Handle an empty event list outside the season or between games.
- Add fantasy authentication. Select the required Yahoo Fantasy Sports API permission when using Yahoo, enable read access and test token renewal. For either provider, show an authentication error instead of silently displaying zero points.
- Set polling rules. Use slower requests outside live windows and faster polling only when games are active. Respect provider limits; a shorter interval increases traffic, heat and the chance of throttling.
- Enclose and power the unit. Provide ventilation, strain relief for USB-C and a viewing angle that does not wash out the LCD. Matrix builds need power wiring sized for peak LED brightness, not merely the ESP32 controller.
Failure handling that keeps the desk display useful
Wi‑Fi or API outage
Cache the last valid response locally and display its age. A visible “stale” indicator is safer than leaving the previous score on screen as though it were current. Retry with backoff instead of issuing requests continuously during an outage.

Changed JSON fields
Validate required fields before drawing. If a team logo, status string or score is missing, render a text fallback and log the parser error. This prevents one malformed event from blanking every matchup.
Logo readability
Treat logos as a separate asset pipeline. The Matrix Portal guide notes that team marks need resizing and gamma correction for an RGB matrix; source images that look fine on a monitor can become muddy or overly bright on LEDs.

Credentials and terms
Do not hard-code fantasy tokens in public firmware. Confirm each provider’s authentication rules and API terms before distributing binaries or publishing a repository that includes credentials.

The documented references establish the display hardware, polling examples and provider paths, but they do not establish one universal enclosure, bill of materials, firmware repository or guaranteed fantasy API availability. Expect to adapt authentication and parsing as providers change. With that qualification, the ESP32-S3 touchscreen is a practical one-cable NFL desk scoreboard, while a HUB75 matrix is the better choice for long-distance visibility and faster refresh.
