Building an encrypted reverse tunnel is only part of the job. In the author’s account of Explita Tunnel, a development-ingress CLI, the harder problems surfaced in ordinary web behavior: a WebSocket handler lost its class context, and compression middleware buffered Server-Sent Events (SSE) instead of delivering them promptly. The project’s cryptographic design is also described as unfinished in an important way: it encrypts relayed traffic but does not yet authenticate the gateway.

What Explita Tunnel is designed to do

The author describes Explita Tunnel, invoked as eta, as an early-release command-line reverse tunnel for local webhook testing, hot-module replacement (HMR), and other development ingress. It relays traffic through a gateway so a local service can be reached for testing without treating the relay as inherently trusted. The capabilities below are reported by the project’s author; they have not been independently verified. Read the author’s account.

  • An ephemeral P-256 elliptic-curve Diffie–Hellman (ECDH) exchange to establish shared session material.
  • HKDF-SHA256 key derivation and AES-256-GCM encryption for relayed frames.
  • An in-memory request replay buffer, a local inspector, and IP/CIDR allowlisting.

The account also discusses implementation concerns beyond the core tunnel: preserving binary and UTF-8 chunk boundaries, handling socket close codes, keeping terminal raw mode responsive, preventing relays from buffering streams, and filtering ping/pong heartbeats out of the wire inspector.

Why encryption does not automatically mean the gateway is trusted

ECDH can let two parties derive shared secret material, and authenticated encryption such as AES-GCM can detect changes to ciphertext when the recipient checks the authentication tag. Neither fact, by itself, proves that the other party is the intended gateway. The author says Explita Tunnel does not yet sign server identity and describes that as planned for a future release. Without gateway authentication, a client lacks cryptographic proof that it negotiated with the gateway it meant to contact—even if the session’s payload encryption is correctly implemented.

Where ordinary web behavior caused trouble

WebSocket handler context and HMR disconnects

The author reports that a Fastify WebSocket route handler was invoked with a different this binding than the router expected. A property lookup then failed and the socket closed abnormally. The author says changing the handler to an arrow property preserved the expected class context. In a development workflow, this kind of failure can show up as repeated HMR disconnects rather than as an obvious cryptographic error.

SSE and compression buffering

SSE depends on updates reaching the browser as they are emitted. The author says Brotli/Gzip compression middleware buffered small text chunks, making the stream appear to hang. Excluding the text/event-stream content type from compression fixed the observed problem. This is the author’s debugging account, not a claim that every compression setup buffers SSE in the same way.

These examples illustrate why a tunnel must preserve application-level delivery behavior, not merely encrypt bytes. A relay or middleware layer that accumulates chunks can make a technically connected stream feel broken.

How to assess Explita Tunnel’s reported safeguards

Replay buffer

The author describes request replay as local and memory-only, with stated buffer limits. That means the feature should not be mistaken for durable request storage; the article does not provide an independent audit of its limits or behavior.

Inspector and allowlisting

A local wire inspector and IP/CIDR allowlisting are also described. Their practical value depends on what the inspector exposes, how access rules are applied, and whether the tunnel’s deployment matches the intended threat model; the account does not establish those details independently.

Choosing a tunnel by the job, not just the encryption label

The author compares Explita Tunnel with ngrok, Cloudflare Tunnel, and Tailscale Funnel using setup friction, relay trust, and intended use. These are the author’s characterizations, not a current independent audit of vendors’ features, security, or pricing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Option Fit described by the author Decision point
Explita Tunnel Temporary developer ingress and local testing Consider the reported encryption design alongside the explicit lack of gateway identity signing.
ngrok Low-friction prototyping Useful when minimizing setup effort is the priority; verify current features and terms for the intended use.
Cloudflare Tunnel Persistent services on custom domains Consider when the need is longer-lived public ingress; check current product details before relying on this fit.
Tailscale Funnel Teams already using a Tailnet Consider when the service belongs in an existing team networking setup; confirm current availability and behavior.

Before choosing, identify whether the service is temporary or persistent, whether it needs public or team-scoped access, what trust you place in the relay, and whether prompt streaming and WebSocket stability are essential. The comparison in the source does not establish a universal winner or a current feature-by-feature ranking.
