I built a browser voice-to-writing tool for the moments when stopping to type interrupts the act of getting an idea down. Speaking can be another way to draft, but a browser-based workflow is only useful if it works where you write—and its privacy depends on how speech recognition processes audio.
Why I made a voice-to-writing tool
The premise is simple: when typing slows down thinking, speaking can keep a draft moving. That is a reason to try a different input method, not a claim that voice is faster or better for everyone. Voice writing still involves recognition errors, editing, and the practical question of where you want the text to appear.
The tool described here is a browser voice-to-writing tool. The available information does not establish its implementation, supported browsers, accuracy, audio routing, retention, or storage, so those details should not be inferred from the fact that it runs in a browser.
What happens when a browser turns speech into text
The Web Speech API provides speech recognition and speech synthesis for web applications. For dictation, its SpeechRecognition interface can receive microphone audio and return recognized text to a page. That describes a possible browser workflow; it does not establish that this particular tool uses the API. See MDN’s Web Speech API reference and its guide to using the API.

Browser-based does not necessarily mean on-device
MDN says Web Speech API recognition normally uses a server-based engine by default. An implementation may offer on-device recognition, but only where the browser supports it. For supported local recognition, the relevant language pack must be installed; MDN also cautions that a device and language-pack combination may support simple voice commands without supporting dictation. Offline use therefore depends on the specific implementation and language, rather than following automatically from running a web app.
If an app falls back to cloud recognition when local recognition is unavailable, that behavior should be disclosed plainly. A user should not have to guess whether audio leaves the device.

Support varies by browser and version
Check the MDN compatibility table before relying on a Web Speech API workflow. Support can differ across browsers and operating systems. Microsoft’s documentation describes a local SpeechRecognition model in Edge Canary or Dev version 150.0.4076 or later, with the feature enabled and its model downloaded. That is a limited, version-specific availability statement—not evidence that the same local mode is generally available in stable browsers. See Microsoft Edge’s SpeechRecognition documentation.

How to choose a voice-writing workflow
There are existing options, but a shared voice-typing label does not mean their features or data practices are interchangeable. Match the workflow to where you write and what you need:

- Browser and operating system: Confirm the exact combination is supported, including any feature-version requirements.
- Where text goes: Decide whether you need voice input in arbitrary web text fields or only inside a particular editor.
- Drafting and revision: Check whether the option supports continuous dictation, adding text at the cursor, or revising selected text by voice.
- Language and recognition mode: Confirm your language is available and whether recognition is local or service-based. Local availability does not itself guarantee dictation support.
- Privacy terms: Read the disclosure for the specific product and feature, rather than assuming all browser recognition uses the same processing model.
Chrome Talk to Type
Google describes Talk to Type as a desktop Chrome feature for adding and refining text in web fields. Its current instructions list macOS, Windows, Linux, and ChromeOS; users must be signed into Chrome, opt in before first use, and allow microphone access. It is unavailable in Incognito. The feature can add text at the cursor and revise selected text with spoken instructions, although Google says text changes are not yet available in Google Workspace apps. Google Docs voice typing
Google Docs voice typing is for writing in Docs, and Google also documents dictation for speaker notes or captions in Slides. The supported browsers listed are current versions of Chrome, Edge, and Safari. You need a working computer microphone; Google recommends speaking clearly at a normal volume and pace. Google says the browser controls the speech-to-text service and sends text to Docs or Slides, so the service path depends on the browser. See Google Docs Editors Help.

What voice dictation means for privacy
Privacy is a property of the recognition mode and the application’s other data practices—not simply of the fact that a tool appears in a browser. MDN says default Web Speech API recognition is server-based; on-device recognition, where supported, keeps audio and transcript from being sent to a third-party service. That does not establish whether a particular app stores other data or how it handles the text it receives. Read the app’s own disclosures.
