Yes, you can automate a home Blu-ray pipeline: insert a disc, let an automation layer call MakeMKV’s command-line core, optionally encode the resulting MKV with HandBrake, and move the finished file into organized storage. “Costs next to nothing” is a marginal-cost claim about reusing hardware and removing repetitive labor—not a measured total-cost figure. You still pay for a compatible optical drive, storage, electricity, discs and occasional maintenance.
What the automated workflow actually does
A reliable setup separates disc extraction from video conversion. The automation layer watches for an inserted disc, identifies its type, starts MakeMKV, waits for the extraction to finish, optionally sends the resulting MKV to HandBrake, names the output and places it in your movie or television directory.
- Insert the disc. Automatic Ripping Machine (ARM) can run unattended: its documentation describes inserting an optical disc and checking whether it contains audio, video or data before processing it.
- Detect and extract. ARM can invoke MakeMKV for Blu-ray and DVD extraction. MakeMKV’s developer documentation says its software has a graphical front end and a command-line core application named
makemkvcon, and explicitly states that automation is supported. - Validate the title. Confirm that the selected playlist is the feature you want, especially on discs containing multiple playlists.
- Optionally transcode. HandBrake can open the MKV files commonly produced by MakeMKV. It is the compression stage, not the disc-decryption stage.
- Organize the result. Move the untouched MKV, the encoded copy, or both into a consistent folder and filename scheme.
- Finish the job. Eject the disc, record success or failure, and leave the system ready for the next insertion.
The result is unattended processing, not a completely hands-off archive. Someone still has to load discs, resolve ambiguous titles and respond to failures.

Why the “next to nothing” claim is about marginal cost
No universal published figure establishes the cost per disc, total build cost, average ripping time or storage consumed by an individual movie. Your economics depend on hardware you already own, the price of each disc, storage capacity, electricity and how much manual work the automation removes.

Can MakeMKV run headless?
Yes. The headless path is makemkvcon, MakeMKV’s command-line core. An automation service such as ARM can call that core instead of opening the graphical interface. MakeMKV’s developer documentation says, “You are welcome to automate MakeMKV.”
MakeMKV still performs the extraction and decryption work. Its BD+ documentation describes a BD+ execution environment and decryption keys, while its BD-Java documentation notes that some discs need a Java runtime and may contain many playlists. Those protections and playlist variations are why a fully unattended job should log its selection and provide a way to review the result.
MakeMKV also documents LibMMBD, an API route for decrypting M2TS and SSIF data, including 4K UHD material. It requires a working MakeMKV installation, so it is not an independent replacement for MakeMKV.

Choose the drive for the discs you actually own
Ordinary Blu-ray support and 4K UHD Blu-ray support are separate compatibility checks. A USB drive that reads DVDs and standard Blu-rays is not automatically able to read UHD discs. Verify the drive model, firmware situation and operating-system compatibility for the format you plan to archive before building the pipeline.

ARM’s getting-started documentation calls for one or more optical drives for Blu-ray, DVD or CD ripping. For UHD transcoding, its 2025 wiki revision lists a memory requirement of 6–16 GB or more, depending on the workload. Treat that as a planning range rather than a guarantee for every encode.
Keep the full MKV or compress it with HandBrake?
Make the decision after extraction, not during it. Keeping the MakeMKV output preserves the source presentation and gives you a high-quality master for future encodes. HandBrake creates a smaller, more playback-friendly derivative, but encoding takes time and can reduce quality depending on settings.

HandBrake’s official documentation confirms that it can open MKV files commonly produced by MakeMKV. It does not replace MakeMKV’s protected-disc extraction role.
Plan storage without guessing a per-movie number
There is no reliable universal figure for how much space a Blu-ray rip consumes. Disc contents, selected tracks, subtitles, audio formats and your HandBrake settings all change the result. Measure your own outputs and keep free space for temporary files: an automated job may need room for the extracted MKV and the encoded derivative at the same time.
Local storage
A directly attached disk keeps the pipeline simple and avoids dependence on a network path. It also makes capacity planning, backup and drive replacement your responsibility.

NAS storage
A NAS centralizes the library and can serve multiple devices, but the automation must have reliable access to the network share and enough free space for intermediate files. Whether you store originals, derivatives or both determines the capacity you need.

Wrong playlist
Some discs contain many playlists because of alternate cuts, menus or deliberate playlist obfuscation. Require a title check for unfamiliar discs instead of blindly accepting the first result.

Recheck that the optical drive is explicitly UHD-capable, then review firmware, operating-system and MakeMKV compatibility. Standard Blu-ray capability alone is not evidence of UHD support.

Transcoding stops or runs out of memory
Check the available memory against ARM’s 6–16 GB-or-more guidance for UHD transcoding, reduce concurrent jobs and confirm that temporary storage is available.
Software or licensing changes
MakeMKV licensing and beta terms, drive firmware compatibility, ARM behavior and retailer pricing can change. Recheck current requirements before expanding the system, and keep the pipeline components on versions that work together.
Extraction succeeds but playback fails
Compare the selected title and included audio or subtitle tracks with the disc. If the source MKV is valid, retry the HandBrake stage with a compatible output setting rather than re-ripping immediately.
Legal and maintenance boundaries
Copyright rules for making personal Blu-ray copies vary by jurisdiction, and this workflow does not establish what is lawful where you live. Check the rules that apply to your country or state before ripping protected media. Also maintain a backup strategy: automation reduces repetitive labor, but it does not protect files from disk failure, accidental deletion or an incorrectly selected title.
The practical verdict is straightforward: an existing computer, a compatible drive and storage can turn repeated disc handling into a mostly unattended pipeline. The savings are in marginal effort and reuse of equipment; the ongoing costs are storage, power, hardware compatibility and the time required to verify exceptions.
