“Hyundai automatic gearbox” does not describe one universal transmission. Hyundai uses conventional automatics, dual-clutch transmissions (DCTs), and intelligent variable transmissions (IVTs); their operation and service schedules can differ. To identify yours or plan maintenance, use the owner’s manual for your exact model year, market, and transmission—not an interval or description borrowed from another Hyundai.
What type of automatic gearbox does my Hyundai have?
Check your vehicle’s owner’s manual and maintenance schedule for the transmission type and fluid-service instructions. Model, year, engine, trim, and market all matter; the manuals cited here cover specific vehicles rather than Hyundai’s entire lineup.
Hyundai owner materials distinguish three categories:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Conventional automatic: A stepped transmission that selects gears while the vehicle is in Drive. In the 2025 US-market DN8 manual, Hyundai says: “The automatic transmission has eight forward speeds and one reverse speed.” That gear count applies to the DN8 described in that manual, not every Hyundai automatic. Read the DN8 automatic-transmission instructions.
- Dual-clutch transmission (DCT): A distinct transmission type with model-specific operating cautions. The cited CN7 manual warns that certain driving conditions can raise clutch and transmission temperature; it does not establish that every Hyundai DCT has identical behavior. See the CN7 DCT warning messages.
- Intelligent variable transmission (IVT): Hyundai identifies IVT separately in its maintenance schedules. The cited material does not provide a basis for a broader technical description or a universal claim about how an IVT feels to drive.
If the manual or schedule is unclear, ask a Hyundai service center to identify the transmission using your vehicle details. Do not choose fluid or a service interval based only on the word “automatic.”

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
How often should Hyundai transmission fluid be changed?
There is no single interval that applies to all Hyundai vehicles. Schedules can vary by transmission type, market, model year, and driving conditions. The figures below are examples from Hyundai severe-use schedules—not a general recommendation for every owner.
| Manual and conditions | Transmission fluid service interval listed |
|---|---|
| 2026 US-market CN7, severe-use schedule; equipped vehicles in the listed conditions | Automatic transmission fluid: 60,000 miles (90,000 km). Hyundai’s US CN7 severe-use schedule |
| 2025 Europe-market CN7, severe-use schedule | Automatic transmission fluid: 90,000 km (60,000 mi). Hyundai’s Europe CN7 severe-use schedule |
| 2025 Europe-market CN7, severe-use schedule | DCT fluid: 120,000 km (80,000 mi). Hyundai’s Europe CN7 severe-use schedule |
| 2025 Europe-market CN7, severe-use schedule | IVT fluid: 90,000 km (60,000 mi). Hyundai’s Europe CN7 severe-use schedule |
The US CN7 schedule identifies severe use such as repeated short trips, rough or corrosive roads, heavy traffic, frequent mountain driving, towing, and frequent stop-and-go driving. Check the applicable manual to determine whether its severe-use schedule fits your driving and what interval applies to your vehicle. These schedule figures are maintenance guidance, not reliability statistics.

The manuals cited here do not establish a fluid specification or service interval for every Hyundai. Match the fluid type and service procedure to the exact vehicle and transmission; a generic fluid recommendation is not enough to confirm compatibility.
What should I do if a Hyundai DCT overheats?
For the 2025 CN7 covered by Hyundai’s cited DCT guidance, creeping up a steep grade by feeding the accelerator, repeated stop-and-go launches, sudden takeoff or acceleration, and other harsh conditions can increase clutch and transmission temperature. If the high-temperature warning appears:

- Move to a safe location and stop.
- Select Park and keep the engine running while the transmission cools.
- Wait for the warning to clear. The manual warns that continuing to drive can cause abrupt, frequent, or jerky shifts.
- If the warning persists, contact an authorized Hyundai dealer.
Follow the warning and instructions in your own vehicle’s manual, since the cited steps are for a specific CN7 manual. Read Hyundai’s CN7 DCT warning guidance.

Towing and heavy loads can add gearbox stress, but the instructions are vehicle-specific. Hyundai’s 2026 LX3 manual says transmission fluid should be checked more frequently when towing. A separate 2026 SX2 manual warns that heavy trailer loads and steep grades can cause engine or transmission overheating in applicable configurations, and describes a protective mode for DCT clutch overheating. These are guidance examples for different vehicles, not one universal towing rule.

What to check before arranging transmission service
- Confirm your model year, market, and transmission type from the owner’s manual or vehicle documentation.
- Use the maintenance schedule for your vehicle and the driving conditions it describes; do not transfer another model’s or transmission type’s interval.
- For a warning or unusual shifting, follow the vehicle’s manual and contact an authorized service center if the warning persists or the manual directs you to do so.
- For towing, use your vehicle’s specific towing and maintenance instructions.
