Hytale uses station-gated crafting: you begin by hand-crafting crude tools and a basic Workbench, then unlock specialist stations for metalworking, leather, farming, combat equipment, cooking, construction, furniture, salvage, alchemy and portal magic. Build the basic Workbench first, follow it with a Furnace, Tanning Rack and Farmer’s Workbench, and then move into the copper-era Blacksmith’s Anvil, Armorer’s Workbench and Chef’s Stove.
This guide explains what every currently documented station does, how the Workbench tier system and shared storage behave, what Update 4 changed on March 26, 2026, and why the Forge and Loom should not yet be treated as ordinary survival stations.

A workbench is a placeable block or table where recipes are performed. Hand crafting covers the opening minutes, but most useful recipes become available only after you build and upgrade the appropriate station. The official CraftingBench schema identifies these objects with the constant Type value Crafting, which distinguishes a true crafting bench from decorative or progression objects.
The basic Workbench is the hub of progression. It creates tools and survival supplies, but its most important job is unlocking the stations that do specialized work. A station normally has its own recipe list and, where applicable, its own upgrade tiers. Exact material costs change with patches, so use the in-game recipe panel for the numbers in your world rather than relying on an old cost list.

Which station should you build first?
- Hand crafting: make crude tools and the first basic stations needed to establish a safe base.
- Basic Workbench: use it for early tools, station construction, tinkering, repair kits, traps, rails and backpack upgrades.
- First specialist stations: add a Furnace, Tanning Rack and Farmer’s Workbench. Together they cover ore processing, leather preparation and the first crop cycle.
- Copper-stage stations: build the Blacksmith’s Anvil, Armorer’s Workbench and Chef’s Stove when copper equipment and prepared food become priorities.
- Tier 2 Workbench stations: expand into the Furniture Workbench, Salvager’s Workbench, Alchemist’s Workbench and Arcanist’s Workbench.
This order follows the progression described by current 2026 Hytale Calculator and OrbisHytale workstation guides. It also prevents a common bottleneck: advancing combat gear before you have the furnace, leather and farming infrastructure that feed later recipes.

The table uses the current Update 4-era terminology. “Not stated” means the cited 2026 guides do not publish a definitive value; it is not a recommendation to assume that the station has no tier or speed behavior.

The Workbench: your central production table
Place the basic Workbench as soon as you have a secure location. Its recipe list bridges hand crafting and the specialist network: it covers practical tools, the construction of additional stations, backpack expansion, repair kits, traps, rails and tinkering. That makes it the station you return to even after your base contains every specialist bench.
Upgrading the Workbench adds recipes and can shorten queue times. OrbisHytale reports a 15% speed bonus at Tier 2 and 30% at Tier 3. Those percentages are guide-reported values for the 2026 version and should be checked against the tooltip in your current build before planning a production schedule.
Material preparation stations
Furnace
The Furnace changes mined ore into usable ingots. It is an active process rather than a one-click conversion: load the required fuel, add the ore, and start the smelting operation. If a queue does not move, check fuel first, then verify that the output slot is not full.

Tanning Rack
The Tanning Rack turns hides into their matching leather. Build it early if you intend to make armor, bags or other leather-dependent equipment; hunting without a rack leaves the raw hide unable to serve those recipes.
Recommended Free Tools
Farmer’s Workbench
This station supports the crop loop with seed bags, farming tools, saplings and Essence of Life. Its tiers follow crop progression rather than a simple metal ladder. Update 4 removed Farmer’s Workbench Tiers 9 and 10, so older progression charts that show those levels are obsolete.
Combat gear and food
Blacksmith’s Anvil
Use the Anvil for weapons: swords, maces, battleaxes, daggers and bows. It becomes valuable after the Furnace is operating because weapon recipes depend on processed metal and the other components shown in each recipe.
Armorer’s Workbench
The Armorer’s Workbench covers defensive equipment: helmets, chest pieces, gloves, leg armor and shields. It is the natural partner to the Anvil, but leather preparation from the Tanning Rack may be just as important as metal supply for a complete armor set.
Chef’s Stove
The Chef’s Stove makes prepared and baked dishes. Farming and cooking therefore reinforce one another: the Farmer’s Workbench supplies the agricultural infrastructure, while the Stove turns harvested ingredients into finished food.

Construction, furnishing and recovery
Builder’s Workbench
The Builder’s Workbench creates block variants. Update 4 made its crafting instant and expanded conversion so full rock, wood and metal blocks can become half slabs and stairs. This is a significant building-quality change: you can shape a structural palette without waiting on a normal production queue.
Furniture Workbench
Use the Furniture Workbench for the pieces that turn a shelter into a functional base: furniture, storage, beds, lighting, decorations, textiles and related building elements. OrbisHytale counted 153 recipes in 2026, so plan storage space before unlocking it rather than treating it as a tiny decorative add-on.
Salvager’s Workbench
The Salvager recovers materials from equipment and processes selected blocks. It is most useful when obsolete gear or surplus building pieces are taking up chest space. Salvaging is a deliberate trade: you give up the original item in exchange for reusable materials, so inspect the output before dismantling anything rare.

Alchemist’s Workbench
The Alchemist’s Workbench handles potions, bombs, morph potions, special seeds and fertilizer. Update 4 added Alchemist’s Workbench Tiers 3, 4 and 5, extending its progression beyond the earlier version. Because several recipes feed back into farming, keep a reserve of ingredients instead of converting every crop immediately.
Arcanist’s Workbench
The Arcanist’s Workbench is the infrastructure station for teleporters, gateways, portal fragments, totems and selected magic staffs. Its recipes are later-stage goals: gather unusual arcane components as you explore, but do not delay the Furnace, farming or combat stations while waiting for portal materials.

Heart of Orbis
The Heart of Orbis is a progression statue associated with Memories, not a craftable bench. Treat it as world progression rather than another station to place beside your production line.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Storage range, queues and offline processing
Current 2026 guides report that a bench can draw ingredients from as many as 100 chests within 14 blocks horizontally and 6 blocks vertically. Inventory items are used first. Build a compact production room inside that range, label or organize the chests by material family, and keep the output side clear; a full output slot can stop a queue.
Update 4 changed the timing model. The official March 26, 2026 notes state: “Workbenches will now continue processing items even if their chunks are unloaded.” They also say that benches resume after a full output slot is emptied, calculate progress using world-game time, warn when world time is stopped, show queued item counts and display item rarity. In practice, you can leave a running queue while traveling, but you still need to return and clear output when storage is full.
How to set up an efficient crafting room
- Place the basic Workbench centrally. Leave room for the Furnace, Tanning Rack and Farmer’s Workbench before decorating.
- Put ingredient chests inside the access envelope. Stay within 14 horizontal blocks and 6 vertical blocks of each bench, and keep the total connected chest count at or below the reported 100-chest limit.
- Separate inputs from outputs. Reserve empty output space so completed ingots, food or gear cannot block a queue.
- Run material preparation first. Start smelting, tanning and farming tasks before queuing weapons, armor or meals.
- Upgrade the Workbench when new recipes matter. Use the in-game tier requirement rather than an old chart, because recipe gates and costs are patch-sensitive.
- Add the copper and Tier 2 stations by need. Prioritize the Anvil or Armorer for combat, the Stove for food, the Builder and Furniture benches for construction, and the Salvager when storage pressure becomes a problem.
- Reserve a later room for alchemy and arcana. Keeping rare ingredients separate reduces accidental use in ordinary recipes.
Common problems and fixes
- The recipe is missing: check that you are interacting with the correct specialist station and that the Workbench tier prerequisite is met.
- Smelting is not progressing: load fuel, confirm the process was started and empty the output slot.
- A bench cannot find ingredients: move the chest within 14 horizontal and 6 vertical blocks, or reduce the number of connected chests if you are near the reported 100-chest limit.
- A queue stopped while you were away: inspect the output slot first. Update 4 supports processing in unloaded chunks, but a full output slot still requires you to remove finished items.
- An old guide shows different tiers: compare it with Update 4 changes, especially the removal of Farmer’s Workbench Tiers 9 and 10 and the addition of Alchemist’s Tiers 3–5.
- You see a Forge or Loom in a file list: do not assume it is craftable in normal survival. Their current status is explained below.
Are the Forge and Loom real survival stations?
OrbisHytale’s September 2026 summary reports that Forge and Loom entries appear in game files but are flagged as developer items. That is evidence of internal or planned content, not confirmation that a survival player can craft and use them. Until an official update documents a recipe, placement method and normal-world availability, treat both as unavailable developer entries rather than adding them to a base-building checklist.
What changed in Update 4?
- Published March 26, 2026, Update 4 allows workbenches to keep processing while their chunks are unloaded.
- Queues resume after a full output slot is emptied, use world-game time for calculations, warn when world time is stopped, show queued item counts and display item rarity.
- Alchemist’s Workbench Tiers 3, 4 and 5 were added.
- Farmer’s Workbench Tiers 9 and 10 were removed.
- Builder’s Workbench crafting became instant, with full rock, wood and metal blocks convertible to half slabs and stairs.
Because station recipes are patch-sensitive, treat any exact cost list as versioned information and verify it in your current game build.
