For most groups in 2026, choose managed Hytale hosting if you want a persistent Hytale world without operating infrastructure. Choose Minecraft if you value the most mature server ecosystem, broad host support, and free official Java or Bedrock server software. Self-host Hytale only when you are comfortable with Java 25, UDP/QUIC networking, backups, security, and capacity tuning.
The practical decision is not just which game you prefer. Hytale’s 4GB memory baseline, QUIC-over-UDP transport, and comparatively wide default view distance create different hosting requirements from Minecraft. Price, latency, support, mod workflow, and your willingness to maintain the machine matter just as much.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteQuick decision: Hytale hosting or Minecraft hosting?
Use this rule of thumb:
- Run Hytale on a managed host when your group wants Hytale specifically and nobody wants to administer Java, firewall rules, UDP networking, backups, updates, and recovery.
- Run Minecraft when your priority is the lowest operational friction, a huge established mod and plugin ecosystem, and official server software that Mojang provides free for Java and Bedrock.
- Self-host Hytale when you have a technically confident operator, control of a suitable machine or virtual server, and time to monitor memory, entities, loaded areas, security, and updates.
Neither game is universally cheaper or faster. A small private world can fit within a modest plan, while high view distance, many entities, exploration, automation, and several simultaneous players raise resource demand in either game.
What Hytale requires in 2026
Hypixel Studios’ Hytale Server Manual, updated October 12, 2026, states: “The Hytale server can run on any device with at least 4GB of memory and Java 25.” That is a documented minimum, not a promise that every world or player count will perform well at 4GB.

Actual consumption changes with player behavior, the number of entities, how much world is loaded, and view distance. Treat 4GB as the point at which the server can run, then measure real usage and leave headroom for your world rather than buying exactly the minimum.
Hytale baseline checklist
- Memory: at least 4GB according to the October 12, 2026 manual; usage rises with entities, loaded area, player activity, and view distance.
- Java: Java 25 is required by that manual.
- Transport: Hytale uses QUIC over UDP, not TCP.
- Default port: 5520.
- View distance: the manual recommends limiting the maximum to 12 chunks, or 384 blocks.
The networking requirement is easy to overlook. A host panel may advertise enough CPU and RAM yet still be unsuitable if its firewall, proxy, or DDoS system assumes TCP-only game traffic.
Why Hytale’s view distance changes the RAM calculation
Hytale’s manual calls view distance the main driver for RAM usage. It recommends a maximum of 12 chunks (384 blocks). The same manual says Hytale’s default 384-block distance is roughly equivalent to 24 Minecraft chunks, while Minecraft’s default is 10 chunks (160 blocks). The chunk and block measurements are not interchangeable, so compare the actual loaded-world radius rather than relying on the chunk number alone.
A larger active area means more terrain and objects can remain in memory as players move or split up. If a Hytale server is close to its memory limit, reduce view distance before assuming the provider’s advertised RAM is defective. Also test with the group’s real behavior: four players exploring in different directions can load more area than four players building together.
Practical tuning order
- Start at or below the manual’s 12-chunk maximum.
- Measure memory while players explore, use machines, and create entities.
- Reduce view distance if memory pressure or long pauses appear.
- Only then consider moving to a larger plan or machine.
Networking: Hytale QUIC/UDP versus Minecraft’s usual setup
Hytale uses the QUIC protocol over UDP. Its default server port is 5520, so the firewall rule, port-forwarding rule, and any provider-side allocation must allow UDP on that port. Opening TCP 5520 alone will not satisfy the requirement.
Minecraft’s exact networking details depend on edition and configuration. Mojang’s official server page says its Java and Bedrock server software is free to download. Java servers commonly use port 25565 for remote players; Bedrock uses the platform’s supported configuration and operating system requirements. In either edition, remote access can require router port forwarding and a firewall exception.

Latency and data-center choice
Choose a data center geographically close to most players. Distance adds latency regardless of game, while an overloaded host, poor peering, or an incorrectly configured UDP path can make Hytale feel unstable even when processor and memory graphs look normal. Ask a prospective provider explicitly:
- Is Hytale’s UDP port 5520 available on the plan?
- Does its DDoS protection understand game traffic and QUIC, or does it apply generic TCP assumptions?
- Can you select a region near your players?
- Can you export the complete world and configuration files?
Managed hosting versus self-hosting
Managed Hytale hosting
A managed host supplies a control panel, server installation, networking, storage, and some combination of backups, monitoring, DDoS mitigation, and support. You still own the decisions about access, world settings, player permissions, and updates, but the provider handles much of the machinery underneath.
This is the easiest route for a persistent Hytale server because setup does not end with installing the server. You also need a reachable UDP endpoint, a safe update process, recoverable backups, and a way to investigate crashes. A good managed plan should expose logs and configuration rather than locking the world into an unexportable panel.
DIY Hytale hosting
Self-hosting can reduce recurring fees when you already have suitable hardware and bandwidth, but it transfers every operational duty to you. You must install and maintain Java 25, obtain the server files, configure the 5520/UDP path, protect the machine, schedule and test backups, apply updates, and watch resource use.
DIY is appropriate for an administrator who can recover the service at inconvenient times. It is a poor fit if the server must remain online while the only operator is away, or if the internet connection has changing addresses, restrictive inbound UDP, or a small upload capacity.
Minecraft hosting
Minecraft has the lower software barrier for many operators. Mojang provides official Java and Bedrock server software free to download. Java requires a compatible Java runtime; Bedrock runs on supported Windows or Linux systems. The ecosystem also offers extensive third-party panels, plugins, mods, tutorials, and host choices accumulated over many years.

That maturity does not eliminate administration. You still need to select an edition, keep versions compatible with clients and plugins, protect operator accounts, back up worlds, and handle port forwarding or provider networking.
RAM, CPU, and capacity: what to budget for
Do not choose a plan from player count alone. Capacity depends on how players use the world.
| Factor | Effect on Hytale | Effect on Minecraft | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Baseline memory | At least 4GB and Java 25, per the October 12, 2026 manual. | Varies by edition, world, simulation distance, mods, and player activity; Mojang’s official software is free, but no single RAM figure fits every server. | Measure peak use under real play, not only at an empty spawn. |
| View or simulation distance | View distance is the main RAM driver; the manual recommends no more than 12 chunks/384 blocks. | Simulation and view settings determine how much terrain and activity remain active. | Lower distance before adding resources if the world does not need a wide horizon. |
| CPU | Fast single-core performance helps when many entities or active areas must be processed. | Tick performance similarly depends heavily on per-core speed, especially with entities and redstone-like activity. | Look for sustained tick delays, not just average CPU percentage. |
| Independent exploration | Players moving apart can load more world area simultaneously. | Separate player locations increase loaded chunks and simulation work. | Test the worst likely group behavior. |
| Storage | World growth, logs, backups, and updates need capacity beyond the initial installation. | Large worlds, modpacks, and backup generations can consume storage quickly. | Confirm quota, backup retention, and export method. |
When comparing plans, prefer guaranteed memory and a clearly stated CPU allocation over a large headline player limit. Ask whether advertised memory is dedicated, shared, or burstable, and whether storage and backups consume the same quota.
What Hytale hosting costs compared with Minecraft
Prices below are dated examples checked August 2, 2026 by Hytale Server Tools. They are volatile, region-dependent, may exclude taxes, and can change at renewal. Promotional first-month or 30-day prices are not recurring prices.
| Provider | Advertised example | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Shockbyte | 5GB, four-player plan at $12.50 per month | Dated monthly example; verify current features, region, renewal, backups, and UDP support. |
| Apex Hosting | 4GB at $11.24 for the first month, then $14.99 recurring | Introductory price is lower than the stated renewal price. |
| GPORTAL | 4GB at $10.08 per 30 days promotion; $13.44 regular | Promotion and regular price are separate; check the term and renewal screen. |
| DatHost | 16GB at €14.90 monthly, or €6.90/month equivalent when billed yearly | Annual billing creates the lower monthly equivalent; compare the total upfront commitment. |
| Nitrado | Plan price not stated in the dated comparison | Check the live regional price and included resources before comparing. |
Minecraft’s official Java and Bedrock server software is free to download, but “free software” is not the same as free 24/7 hosting. You still pay for a virtual server, home electricity and bandwidth, or a managed provider if you want persistent availability. Compare total cost: hosting, storage, backups, a static or reachable endpoint, taxes, and renewal pricing.

- Is the quoted price introductory, promotional, monthly, or an annual equivalent?
- What is charged at renewal?
- Are taxes, backups, additional storage, and a dedicated address extra?
- Can you download the world and restore it on another provider?
- Are UDP/QUIC and port 5520 supported on the exact plan and region?
- What refund terms apply after provisioning?
Step-by-step: launching a managed Hytale server
- Select a region: choose the data center nearest to most players, then confirm that the plan supports Hytale rather than only Minecraft.
- Verify resources: check allocated memory, CPU policy, storage, backup quota, and whether the advertised memory is dedicated. Use the 4GB manual requirement as a floor, not a target for a busy world.
- Confirm networking: ask for UDP/QUIC support and verify that port 5520 is assigned and reachable. A TCP-only option is unsuitable.
- Install the server: use the provider’s Hytale template or documented installer. Confirm that it supplies Java 25 or lets you select it.
- Set access controls: change panel credentials, enable multi-factor authentication when available, and give operator permissions only to trusted people.
- Configure the world: set view distance no higher than the manual’s 12-chunk/384-block recommendation while you establish a baseline.
- Run a group test: have players explore in different directions, create entities, and perform normal activities while you watch memory, CPU, tick time, logs, and network behavior.
- Schedule backups: keep automatic generations and make at least one downloadable copy outside the host. Test a restore before you need it.
- Document updates: record the current server version, configuration changes, and rollback procedure before applying an update.
Step-by-step: self-hosting Hytale
- Prepare the machine: use a system with at least 4GB of memory and Java 25, then reserve additional capacity for the operating system, logs, backups, and growth.
- Install Java 25: verify that the service actually launches with Java 25 rather than an older runtime left on the system.
- Install the official server files: follow Hypixel Studios’ current Hytale Server Manual for the supported files and launch procedure.
- Bind the network correctly: expose the Hytale service on UDP port 5520. Configure the host firewall and, if applicable, the home router’s UDP port-forwarding rule.
- Harden the host: apply operating-system updates, disable unnecessary services, use a non-administrator account for routine work, restrict panel or shell access, and protect credentials.
- Set a conservative view distance: use the recommended 12 chunks/384 blocks maximum while measuring real usage.
- Automate backups: copy world data and configuration to separate storage, retain multiple generations, and periodically perform a complete restore test.
- Monitor and update: watch memory peaks, CPU saturation, tick delays, disk space, disconnects, and logs. Stage updates so you can return to the previous files if a change breaks the world.
If your ISP uses carrier-grade NAT or blocks inbound UDP, router configuration alone will not make a home server reachable. In that case, use a provider or network arrangement that supplies a routable endpoint.

Backups, support, and portability
A host’s backup checkbox is not a complete disaster-recovery plan. Confirm how often backups run, how many generations are retained, whether they include configuration and permissions, where they are stored, and whether you can download them. A provider that cannot export your world creates migration risk even if the control panel is convenient.
Support quality matters more for Hytale because QUIC/UDP adds another failure point. Before purchasing, ask whether support can diagnose port reachability, firewall rules, packet loss, and version-specific startup errors, or whether it only confirms that a process is running. For Minecraft, support should also understand edition differences, plugin/mod compatibility, and world conversion limits.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Mods, plugins, and version control
Minecraft’s long-established ecosystem generally offers more documented plugin, mod, server-wrapper, and administration workflows. That breadth is useful, but it also creates compatibility combinations: the game version, loader, plugin or mod versions, Java runtime, and world format must agree.
Recommended Free Tools
Hytale’s server tooling is newer. Treat every add-on or configuration change as a versioned deployment: keep a clean backup, change one variable at a time, record what changed, and test on a separate instance when possible. A managed panel is valuable only if it exposes files, logs, version selection, and rollback options rather than hiding them.
Security and monetization responsibilities
Hytale’s EULA places infrastructure costs and responsibilities on operators. You pay for hosting, bandwidth, storage, security, and related infrastructure, and Hytale does not guarantee third-party uptime or support. Plan for outages and maintain your own backups instead of assuming the game developer can restore a provider failure.
If you charge players, disclose prices and terms truthfully and comply with rules covering gambling, random items, advertising, and consumer protection. Do not describe a paid rank, loot mechanic, subscription, or chance-based reward in a way that hides its cost or odds. These obligations apply regardless of whether the server is self-hosted or managed.

Minimum operational protections
- Use unique administrative credentials and multi-factor authentication where available.
- Limit operator permissions and review the list after staff changes.
- Keep the server, Java runtime, panel, and operating system patched.
- Use DDoS protection that supports the game’s actual UDP/QUIC traffic.
- Keep offline or off-provider backups and test restoration.
- Log purchases, policy changes, and moderation actions when operating a public or monetized server.
Which choice fits common groups?
Four friends who want to play immediately
Pick a managed Hytale plan if Hytale is the goal and nobody wants to troubleshoot Java 25 or UDP. A small managed Minecraft server is simpler still if the group is undecided and values mature tooling over Hytale’s specific game experience.

- CPU allocation is clear and suitable for single-thread-heavy workloads.
- Data center is near the majority of players.
- Renewal price, taxes, billing term, refund policy, and promotional expiry are understood.
- Backups include world and configuration files, with a downloadable export.
- DDoS mitigation handles the game’s traffic type.
- Version selection, logs, file access, and rollback are available.
- Support can troubleshoot networking and game-specific failures.
Bottom-line recommendation for 2026
Choose managed Hytale hosting for the easiest persistent Hytale experience, provided the host explicitly supports UDP/QUIC on port 5520, Java 25, backups, exports, and a nearby region. Choose Minecraft when free official server software, broad host support, and a mature mod/plugin ecosystem outweigh Hytale’s newer features. Choose DIY Hytale only when you can operate Java 25 and UDP networking yourself and are prepared to own security, backups, updates, and capacity tuning.
