Hytale has several different portal limits, not one universal cap. The documented server setting MaxConcurrentFragments defaults to 4 and controls how many portal fragments can be open at once. A portal type’s AllowedEntryCount defaults to 1 (with 0 meaning unlimited), while TimeLimitSeconds defaults to -1 (with 0 or less meaning no time limit). The player message “placement limit reached” appears to belong to a separate progression-based placement system; its exact formula and cap have not been published in the official documentation.

Hytale’s “portal limit” is really four different limits

When a server owner or player asks for the Hytale portal limit, they may be describing different systems. A portal can be blocked because the server already has its maximum number of portal fragments open, because a player has used all permitted entries, because the portal world has reached its duration, or because the game’s progression-based placement system has reached a threshold. Those conditions have different scopes and different remedies.

Setting or message What it limits Scope Documented default or behavior
MaxConcurrentFragments Portal fragments open at the same time Shared server count; enforced by each world’s GameplayConfig 4
AllowedEntryCount How many times a player may enter a portal world Portal type or individual portal key, depending on where it is defined 1; 0 allows unlimited entries
TimeLimitSeconds How long a portal world remains open Portal world -1; 0 or less means no time limit
“Placement limit reached” Player-facing placement progression Community reports describe it as server-wide No authoritative formula or numeric cap published

The first three rows come from the current Hytale documentation and Update 7’s modder-facing notes. The last row is a reported symptom, not an officially specified configuration value. Identifying which row matches the error is the fastest way to avoid changing the wrong setting.

How MaxConcurrentFragments works

The documented default is four

In the Hytale Docs GameplayConfigs reference, MaxConcurrentFragments is an integer whose default is 4. It is described as the maximum number of portal fragments that can be open at the same time. A fragment is the concurrently active portal instance counted by this system; it is not the same thing as the number of times one player may enter a world.

The count is shared, but enforcement is per world configuration

The documentation makes two points that can sound contradictory until they are read together. First, the fragment count is shared across the server. Second, the limit is enforced by the world’s GameplayConfig. In practical terms, multiple worlds draw from one server-wide concurrent-fragment budget, while each world applies the value supplied by its own gameplay configuration. Opening a fragment in one world can therefore consume capacity that another world would otherwise use.

This is why testing only one world can produce a misleading result. A portal may fail even though that world appears idle if fragments are still open elsewhere on the server. Conversely, changing a configuration in a world that is not enforcing the attempted portal will not solve the problem.

What to inspect when concurrency is the problem

Check the relevant world’s GameplayConfig and locate MaxConcurrentFragments. Confirm the value actually loaded by the running server rather than relying on an edited file that has not been reloaded. Then account for every active fragment across the server. The official reference establishes the setting and its default, but it does not provide a universal command sequence or a promise that every change can be applied without restarting; follow the administration procedure for the Hytale server version you operate.

Entry limits are separate from concurrent fragments

AllowedEntryCount controls repeat access

A portal can remain open while a particular player is denied entry. The AllowedEntryCount field answers: how many times can that player join the portal world before the world locks that player out? Its documented default is 1. Setting it to 0 allows unlimited entries.

This is a per-player entry rule, not a server-wide count of all visitors and not a cap on simultaneous portal fragments. If ten players each have one allowed entry, the setting can still permit ten total entries while each player is admitted only once. A player who has exhausted the count may see an entry-related denial even when fragment capacity is available.

Portal type defaults and portal-key overrides

Update 7 clarified how these values are inherited. Portal types now carry the default time limit and entry count. TimeLimitSeconds and AllowedEntryCount defined on a PortalType apply to every key of that type. A PortalKey only needs to specify those fields when it should differ from the type default.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That inheritance model creates two common diagnostic traps:

  • You change a portal key but the portal continues using the type’s value because the key does not override the field you intended to change.
  • You change the portal type and unintentionally alter every key that inherits from it.

When repeated joins fail, inspect both levels: the effective value on the key, and the type default that supplies it when no override exists.

Duration limits determine when a portal world closes

The default and the no-limit value

TimeLimitSeconds specifies how long the portal world stays open, measured in seconds. The documented default is -1. A value of 0 or less means there is no time limit. Therefore, -1, 0, and other negative values all represent an unlimited duration under the documented rule, even though -1 is the published default.

Why duration can look like another limit

If a portal world closes while players are still trying to use it, the visible symptom may resemble a capacity problem. Check the effective TimeLimitSeconds before changing concurrency or entry settings. Update 7 also confirms that a portal type’s default duration flows to its portal keys, so a key may inherit a finite lifetime without containing its own duration field.

Removing the duration does not grant unlimited entries. A world with no time limit can still lock a player out after that player reaches AllowedEntryCount. Likewise, setting unlimited entries does not keep a world open if it has a positive time limit.

What “placement limit reached” means

It appears to be a different progression system

The exact phrase “placement limit reached” is commonly used by players troubleshooting portal placement. Available community reports indicate that this limit is associated with progression and applies to the whole server, but the official documentation does not publish the progression formula, a definitive placement table, or a documented configuration switch that removes the cap.

Do not automatically map this message to MaxConcurrentFragments. The latter is a documented concurrency setting with a default of four. “Placement limit reached” is a player-facing progression symptom whose numeric rules remain unspecified in the authoritative references currently available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What can and cannot be concluded

  • Supported: community observations describe server-wide behavior and progression-related increases.
  • Not established: the exact starting allowance, the amount gained at each progression step, the maximum, or a guaranteed configuration file field.
  • Unsafe assumption: raising MaxConcurrentFragments will remove a placement message.

If the message persists after you verify that no fragment, entry, or duration rule is responsible, treat it as the progression placement system. Avoid promising players a numeric workaround until Hytale publishes version-specific values.

Step-by-step troubleshooting workflow

  1. Record the exact message and timing. Note whether the failure occurs while creating a portal, while entering, after a player has entered once, or after the world has been open for a period. Preserve the wording “placement limit reached” if that is what the interface displays.
  2. Test for fragment concurrency. Review the relevant world’s GameplayConfig and its MaxConcurrentFragments value. Count active fragments across all worlds because the documented count is shared by the server. With the default value, the server can have four concurrent fragments before this limit is reached.
  3. Test for an entry-count lockout. Inspect the effective AllowedEntryCount on the portal’s key. If the key does not override the field, inspect its PortalType. Remember that the default is one entry per player and that zero means unlimited entries.
  4. Test for automatic expiry. Inspect TimeLimitSeconds on the key and its type. A positive value closes the world after that many seconds; zero or any negative value disables the duration limit under the documented behavior.
  5. Separate placement from configuration. If the UI specifically says “placement limit reached” and the fragment, entry, and duration checks do not explain it, classify it as the progression placement system. There is no authoritative published formula to calculate or override it.
  6. Apply changes through your server’s administration process. Use the official Hytale Server Manual for dedicated-server operation, configuration loading, and hosting-provider administration context. The exact reload or restart requirement can depend on the server version and the setting being changed.
  7. Retest with a controlled case. Change one relevant value at a time, test from a player whose entry history is known, and record whether the symptom changes. This prevents an entry lockout from being mistaken for a concurrency fix.

Can you remove or increase the Hytale portal limit?

Documented settings can be adjusted within their supported scope

MaxConcurrentFragments, AllowedEntryCount, and TimeLimitSeconds are documented fields, so administrators can evaluate values appropriate to their server configuration. The references explicitly define the defaults and the special no-limit values for entries and duration. Any adjustment should be made against the configuration actually used by the target world or portal type, and it should be validated after the server loads the change.

The placement cap is not documented as a switch

No authoritative source in the available Hytale documentation publishes a numeric placement cap or an option that disables the progression-based “placement limit reached” system. Community reports that the allowance increases with progression may help explain behavior, but they are not a substitute for a versioned specification. Treat any claimed formula, maximum, or bypass as unverified unless Hytale documents it for your release.

Do not solve the wrong problem

  • Increasing fragment concurrency cannot grant a player more entries.
  • Setting unlimited entries cannot stop a portal world from closing on a positive time limit.
  • Removing a duration does not create more placement progression.
  • Changing a type default may affect every portal key that inherits it.

Planning a server with several portal worlds

Think in terms of separate budgets. The concurrent-fragment budget is shared by the server, so simultaneous activity in different worlds competes for the same capacity. Entry allowances are tracked by player and inherited from portal types unless overridden on individual keys. Duration is a lifetime policy for each portal world. Placement is a progression gate whose exact arithmetic is not documented.

For a small private server, the default four concurrent fragments may be sufficient if players open only a few worlds at once. A busier server should monitor how many fragments are active before increasing a value, because a higher concurrency setting can change resource demand even though the documentation does not specify a universal performance threshold. Keep entry and duration policies intentional: a portal designed for one-time participation should retain an entry count of one, while a hub intended for repeated travel can use zero for unlimited entries and a duration that matches its purpose.

Administrator checklist

  • Write down the exact error text before editing configuration.
  • For a concurrency error, inspect MaxConcurrentFragments in the enforcing world’s GameplayConfig and count fragments server-wide.
  • For repeat-join failures, inspect AllowedEntryCount on the PortalKey, then its PortalType; zero means unlimited.
  • For worlds that close unexpectedly, inspect TimeLimitSeconds; zero or less means no duration limit.
  • For “placement limit reached,” explain the distinction and avoid quoting an unsupported cap or formula.
  • After any edit, follow the current server’s documented load, reload, or restart procedure and retest with a known player and portal.

Bottom line

There is no single Hytale portal-limit number. The official concurrency default is four open portal fragments shared across the server and enforced through each world’s GameplayConfig. A portal type normally allows one entry per player, with AllowedEntryCount=0 providing unlimited entries, and its default duration is unlimited because TimeLimitSeconds=-1 (or any value of 0 or less) means no time limit. The separate “placement limit reached” message is associated by community reports with progression and server-wide placement, but Hytale has not published the formula or a definitive override. Diagnose the exact symptom first, then change only the setting that governs it.
