Open the Hytale Launcher, select Settings, choose Open Directory…, and then select User Data. Hypixel Studios says, “The User Data button always opens the correct folder.” That is the safest way to locate saves because custom Windows installations and different Hytale patchlines can use different directories.
For the release patchline, the documented User Data locations are Windows %APPDATA%HytaleUserData, macOS ~/Library/Application Support/Hytale/UserData, and Linux $XDG_DATA_HOME/Hytale/UserData or ~/.local/share/Hytale/UserData. A single-player world is stored inside that user-data area. Dedicated servers use a different backup target: the complete universe/ directory, which contains world and player save data.

The table combines official guidance written for different game contexts. Treat the Launcher’s User Data command as authoritative for the installation you are using, then identify the save folder inside the directory it opens.
Why the path can differ between Hytale installations
Hytale has more than one storage layout. The release patchline uses the User Data directory shown above. Update 5 changed storage for non-release patchlines, placing them in separate directories below %HYTALE%/data/. During migration, existing non-release worlds, mods and settings are duplicated; after migration, patchlines no longer share data.

As a result, a world created in a pre-release build may not sit beside a release world, even when both are installed on the same computer. A path copied from an old forum post or video can also be wrong if you selected a custom Windows install directory. Opening the directory from the active Launcher avoids both problems.
How to find a single-player world
Use the Launcher first
- Exit the world, or at least return to the title screen, so no save is being written while you inspect it.
- Open the Hytale Launcher for the patchline that contains your world.
- Open Settings.
- Click Open Directory….
- Select User Data. The resulting folder is the correct data root for that installation.
- Look for the client save area inside that root. World folders may be nested rather than displayed as a single file with a recognizable world name.
Do not rename, reorganize or delete folders while you are locating a save. Make a copy first if you need to inspect contents.
Windows
If you need to reach the documented release location manually, open File Explorer, click the address bar, enter %APPDATA%HytaleUserData, and press Enter. Environment variables take you to the correct roaming-data location even when your Windows user profile is on another drive. If that folder does not match the Launcher’s result, use the Launcher result; a custom install or a different patchline is likely involved.
macOS
In Finder, choose Go in the menu bar, select Go to Folder…, enter ~/Library/Application Support/Hytale/UserData, and press Return. The Library folder is normally hidden from ordinary browsing, which is why pasting the path is more reliable than clicking through your home folder.

Linux
Open the file manager and enter the path reported by the Launcher. Depending on your environment, the release data is under $XDG_DATA_HOME/Hytale/UserData or the fallback ~/.local/share/Hytale/UserData. In a terminal, echo "$XDG_DATA_HOME" shows whether the variable is set. If it is empty, check the fallback location and confirm against Open Directory….
Back up a client world safely
A reliable backup is a separate, dated copy made while Hytale is no longer changing the files. A same-disk duplicate protects against an accidental deletion, but it does not protect against a failed drive or an operating-system reinstall.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Close the active world. Return to the title screen and exit Hytale. Do not copy a world while chunks, player state or metadata may still be written.
- Open the active data root. Use Settings → Open Directory… → User Data in the Launcher rather than relying on a path from an older guide.
- Identify the complete world or save folder. Copy the folder as a unit; do not select only a visible region, chunk or configuration file.
- Create a dated destination copy. Use an external drive, another internal disk or a network location. A name such as
Hytale-backup-2026-10-15records when the copy was made. - Leave the original untouched. A backup is useful only if the source remains intact until the copy has been checked.
- Verify the copy. Compare the copied folder’s size and contents with the source, then test a restore in a duplicate location before deleting or reinstalling the original.
- Keep several dated versions. Retain more than one backup so a damaged or incomplete copy is not your only recovery point.
When moving a world to another computer, copy the folder to the corresponding save area on the destination installation, then launch the same Hytale patchline and check the world list. If the destination uses another patchline, first determine that patchline’s data root; Update 5 keeps patchline data separate.
Moving a single-player world to another player or PC
Hytale’s newer multiplayer support guidance tells players moving a single-player world to look in %appdata%Hytalesaves and send the world folder. That instruction describes a particular transfer workflow, while the logs and launcher documentation describe the broader User Data root. If the saves path is not where your current Launcher opens, use the Launcher’s User Data directory and locate the equivalent save folder there.

Transfer checklist
- Close Hytale before creating the copy.
- Send the complete world folder, preserving its internal files and subfolders.
- Tell the recipient which Hytale patchline created the world.
- Have the recipient place the folder in the matching installation’s save area and restart the Launcher or game before checking the world list.
- Keep your original copy until the recipient confirms that the world opens and recent progress is present.
A transfer is not the same as a server migration. A client world copy does not include a dedicated server’s permissions, server configuration, installed mods or logs.
Dedicated-server saves: back up universe/
For a self-hosted dedicated server, stop the server cleanly before copying anything. The server manual defines universe/ as the location for world and player save data. Playable worlds are under universe/worlds/, and each world can have its own configuration files.
Manual dedicated-server backup
- Warn connected players and shut down the server using its normal stop command or console procedure.
- Wait for the process to exit completely; a closed console window is not proof that all writes have finished if a wrapper is still running.
- Copy the entire
universe/directory to a dated destination. Do not copy only one directory belowuniverse/worlds/if you need player inventories and server-wide save data. - For a modded or carefully configured server, also preserve the server directory’s configuration, mods, permissions and any other files needed to reproduce the installation. Logs are useful for diagnosis but are not a substitute for the universe backup.
- Start the server and test a restore using a duplicate server directory, never by overwriting the only live copy.
Automatic server backups
Hytale’s native server controls include --backup, --backup-dir <Path> and --backup-frequency <Integer>. The documented wrapper example uses a 30-minute backup frequency and a directory named backups.
Automation reduces the chance that an operator forgets a manual copy, but it does not remove the need for off-device storage and periodic restore tests. Configure the backup destination on a different disk or host when possible, monitor available space, and keep multiple generations instead of allowing every new backup to overwrite the previous one.

What belongs in a complete server recovery set
The save-critical directory is universe/, but recreating a usable server can require more than world data. Preserve the following when they apply:
universe/: worlds, player data and save-wide state.- Server configuration: settings that control how the server starts and behaves.
universe/worlds/contents: playable worlds and per-world configuration.- Mods: the exact mod files expected by the world and server.
- Permissions: operator or access-control data needed after migration.
- Logs: diagnostic history that can help explain a failed restore, but does not restore a world by itself.
Hytale’s client support article says only the ten newest client log files are retained. That ten-file limit concerns troubleshooting logs, not the number of world backups you may keep.
Restore and verify a backup
- Install or prepare the destination Hytale release or patchline.
- Launch once, then exit, so the destination creates its normal data structure.
- Open Settings → Open Directory… → User Data and locate the destination save area.
- Rename the newly created destination folder or move it aside. Do not overwrite it until you have a rollback copy.
- Copy the backed-up world folder into the matching save location. For a dedicated server, restore the complete
universe/directory while the server is stopped. - Start the client or server and check the world list, player state and recent changes.
- Enter the world and verify several known landmarks, inventories or builds. A folder that appears in the list is not proof that every file restored correctly.
If the world does not appear, stop before deleting anything. Confirm that you restored into the active patchline’s directory, that the folder nesting matches the original, and that the copy completed without permission or disk-space errors.

The game is using another patchline
Release and non-release patchlines no longer share data after the Update 5 migration. Check the Launcher you used to create the world and open that installation’s User Data directory. A pre-release world may be under a patchline-specific directory such as %HYTALE%/data/pre-release/ rather than the release User Data path.

- 256-BIT AES ENCRYPTION(4) – helps keep private files secure with password protection.
The Windows installation is custom
A custom install can place Hytale’s base directory somewhere other than the default assumed by a guide. The Launcher’s Open Directory… command accounts for that choice; use it instead of searching only under the default profile path.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHidden folders are blocking manual navigation
macOS hides Library in Finder, and Linux hides names beginning with a dot, including .local. Paste the documented path into the file manager’s location field or use the Launcher button.
You are checking while the world is open
Some files may be created or renamed during play. Exit the world and Hytale before deciding that a folder is missing or before copying it.
You are looking in the server directory for a client world
A dedicated server’s universe/ directory is separate from a client’s User Data save. Determine whether the world was created in single-player or on a server, then use the corresponding backup target.
The copy was incomplete
Interrupted transfers, insufficient destination space and permission errors can leave a folder that looks present but cannot load. Compare the source and destination, recopy while Hytale is closed, and test the replacement in a duplicate location.
A practical Hytale backup routine
- Make a manual client-world copy before reinstalling Hytale, changing patchlines or moving to another computer.
- Use a dated name that includes the backup date and, when useful, the patchline.
- Store at least one copy away from the computer running Hytale.
- For a dedicated server, schedule native backups with
--backup,--backup-dirand--backup-frequency, then check that new files are actually appearing. - Retain several generations and periodically restore one to a disposable location.
- Preserve the complete
universe/directory for servers, not only the world folder visible underuniverse/worlds/. - Keep the original until the restored copy has been opened and checked.
A portable external SSD can be a convenient destination for dated copies, but Hytale does not require a particular drive type or capacity. The essential protections are a complete, closed-game copy, separation from the original disk and a restore test.
The Bottom Line
For a client world, use Launcher → Settings → Open Directory… → User Data, then copy the complete save folder while Hytale is closed. For a dedicated server, stop it and back up the entire universe/ directory. Let the Launcher identify the active path whenever a copied guide conflicts with your installation, especially after Update 5 patchline changes.
