Playing with friends? Godlike.Host runs hosted Hytale servers from 10 data-center locations, with free DDoS protection.
Start with a small Asset Pack made in Hytale’s in-game Asset Editor. Test it in a disposable local world, then move to a Java plugin only when you need server-side commands, events, systems, or behavior that assets cannot express. Hytale modding is host-side: the server or world host installs the pack or plugin, while connecting players generally do not maintain a separate modded client.
What Hytale modding means in the current release
Hytale’s official documentation hub is built for both running servers and building mods. It currently labels its documentation release as 0.7.2 and provides a creating-content guide, a Hytale Generator reference, Java API documentation for plugin developers, and an Asset Reference generated from the server’s codecs. Use those references as the authority for the patchline you are actually running; early-access APIs and examples can change.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The most important design decision is that Hytale is server-side first. Hypixel Studios Technical Director Kevin “Slikey” Carstens described the model this way: “All modding in Hytale is based on the host of the server or host of the game.” The studio has also said it does not intend to support client mods. In practical terms, a host loads the content and the game presents the resulting world to players, rather than requiring every player to assemble the same client-side modpack.
That model affects every part of a project:
- You install and test content on the host, local world, or dedicated server.
- You do not begin by modifying a player’s client installation.
- Multiplayer testing must include the actual host/server environment, not only a local editor preview.
- Server and client still need to use the exact same protocol version.
Choose the right kind of mod before you build
Most beginners should make an Asset Pack first. An Asset Pack changes or adds content through files and configuration. A Java plugin is the next step when the project needs executable server logic. CurseForge describes plugins as mods written in Java that use the game API to extend vanilla functionality and add content.

There is also an “Early Plugins” category on CurseForge. These operate outside the standard plugin environment and perform low-level class transformations. Treat them as an advanced escape hatch, not as an alternative beginner workflow. They increase the chance of breakage when internals change and should not be your first project.
Prepare your tools and references
Before creating files, open the official Hytale documentation for your release line. Read the creating-content material and the Asset Reference before copying an example. For code, use the Java API documentation and the current server manual rather than an old tutorial. CurseForge’s Hytale support article, modified February 9, 2026, warns that tutorials can be outdated or incomplete because Hytale is in Early Access.

- For either path: permission to write to the game’s user data or server directory, and a version-control or backup habit so you can restore a working state.
Do not pin a dependency version from an old guide without checking the current manual. The manual documents a Maven dependency named com.hypixel.hytale:Server and says the HytaleServer JAR will be published to a Maven repository for modding projects. The version and repository details are release-sensitive, so copy the values shown in the manual for the patchline you intend to run.
Build your first Asset Pack
The official guide calls Asset Packs the most accessible form of creator modification. A pack is a folder or ZIP containing a custom set of assets and normally includes a manifest.json. The in-game Asset Editor is the safest starting point because it creates the manifest and folder layout Hytale expects.
1. Create the pack in the Asset Editor
- Launch Hytale and open the in-game Asset Editor.
- Create a new Asset Pack rather than starting with a hand-built directory.
- Enter a clear group, name, version, description, and author. These values become the pack’s identity in its
manifest.json. - Save the pack before making content changes so you have a known-good baseline.
Use a stable, descriptive name. Avoid changing the identity fields casually after other worlds or servers depend on the pack; a renamed pack can be treated as a different piece of content.
2. Make one controlled change
Add or modify one asset at a time. A single texture, model, sound, UI element, or configured asset gives you a small failure surface and makes it obvious which change caused a problem. Asset Packs can override base-game assets, and they can also add new assets. An override should use the exact path and format expected by the Asset Reference; a new asset must be referenced by whatever content system consumes it.

Keep the original file or a clean copy beside your working version. When an override produces an unexpected result, restoring the original quickly is more useful than trying several unrelated edits at once.
3. Save to a host location
The official guide documents two useful locations on Windows:
C:Users<user>AppDataRoamingHytaleUserDataModsfor packs that should be available across worlds.- A per-world folder such as
...SavesNew World 5modsfor a pack used only by that world.
You can save the pack in the world’s mods folder, or copy it to the user Mods folder when it must be available in other worlds. Keep the directory structure generated by the editor; do not add an extra nesting level when copying a ZIP or folder.
4. Enable it for a disposable world
- Open the New World menu.
- Open the world’s Options area.
- Enable the Asset Pack.
- Create or load a disposable test world and inspect the changed content.
Only the server or world host has to download Asset Packs and Mods. If another player joins your hosted world, they should not need to install a separate client mod for that content. Test with a second player before treating the pack as multiplayer-ready, because host-only loading and actual synchronization are different checks.

Know where Hytale installs mods
For a local game, start with the user-level folder C:Users<user>AppDataRoamingHytaleUserDataMods. A world-specific pack belongs in that world’s save directory, under its mods folder—for example, ...SavesNew World 5mods. The exact save name depends on the world you created.
For a dedicated server, install the mod in the server layout expected by the current manual rather than copying a local-world path blindly. A server can be acquired and bootstrapped in several ways, and the resulting directory is the reference point for its assets, configuration, saves, and plugins.

When a Java plugin is the better tool
Choose a Java plugin when the requirement is behavioral: a command should execute, an event should trigger code, a system should track state, or a rule should be enforced dynamically. Asset files can describe content and configuration, but they do not replace server-side logic.
A practical escalation test is:
- If you can express the change as an asset, definition, or configuration value, stay with an Asset Pack.
- If the change must inspect runtime state, react to events, schedule work, expose commands, or coordinate systems, evaluate a plugin.
- If the project depends on low-level class transformation, stop and verify that a standard plugin cannot provide the behavior; an Early Plugin is an exceptional choice.
Set up the plugin project
- Read the current Java API and server manual for the exact Hytale release you will run.
- Create a Java project with the manual’s
com.hypixel.hytale:ServerMaven dependency and repository settings. - Implement the smallest possible feature—one command or one event is a better first milestone than a full game system.
- Build the project and copy the resulting plugin artifact into the server’s documented plugin location.
- Start the server, read its log for load and registration errors, and test the feature in a disposable world.
Do not assume a class name, lifecycle hook, or package from a third-party snippet still exists. Early-access APIs can move, and a successful compilation against one release does not prove compatibility with another.

Set up a dedicated test server
A local world is enough for the first Asset Pack check. Move to a dedicated server when you need to test multiplayer behavior, server startup, permissions, persistent saves, or plugin loading. The current server manual documents three acquisition routes:
- Copy server files from the Hytale launcher.
- Use the authenticated Hytale Downloader CLI.
- Bootstrap from
HytaleServer.jar.
The downloader can fetch the latest release, print its version, select the pre-release patchline, and write files to a specified path. Because command-line options can change, use the syntax shown in the current manual instead of an older blog post.
Bootstrap sequence from HytaleServer.jar
- Create an empty directory for the server and place
HytaleServer.jarin it. - Run
java -jar HytaleServer.jar --bootstrap. - When the server requests authentication, enter
/auth login deviceand complete the device-login flow. - Run
/update setupor/update downloadas directed by the manual. - Confirm that the resulting layout contains
Assets.zip, launcher scripts, and aServerdirectory containingHytaleServer.jarand configuration files. - Place your test world, Asset Packs, and plugins in the locations defined by that layout, then start the launcher script supplied by the server files.
Keep this server separate from a valuable survival world. A test server lets you stop, replace a mod, inspect logs, and restore a backup without risking your main save.

The server manual is explicit: “Client and server must be on the exact same protocol version.” A matching major version is not enough if the protocol patch differs. Before debugging a mod, verify the client build and server build first; otherwise a connection failure can look like a plugin or asset problem.

- Further guides on how to join your server
The manual also documents automatic updates that preserve configuration, saves, and mods when you use the expected folder layout. Let the documented updater manage that layout, and back up the server directory before moving to a new patchline. If an update changes an asset schema or Java API, disable the affected mod while you isolate the compatibility issue.
Test like a mod author, not only like a player
Use a repeatable test loop for every change:
- Back up the current world or start from a disposable copy.
- Change one asset or one code path.
- Start the host/server and watch the log for load errors.
- Verify the expected result in game.
- Test the failure case: missing asset, invalid command input, unloaded world, or a second player joining.
- Stop the server cleanly, restart it, and confirm that the result persists if persistence is part of the feature.
- Record the Hytale version, mod version, and test result before making another change.
For an Asset Pack, check both an override and an addition if your pack claims to do both. For a plugin, test startup, shutdown, reload behavior if supported, permissions, malformed input, and a clean server with no unrelated mods. Keep logs from a failing run; they are more useful than a screenshot when you later compare API or asset changes.
Publish a Hytale mod through CurseForge
CurseForge’s Hytale FAQ says authors create mods with the in-game Asset Editor and then submit them for moderation after signing in. Players can discover, install, and update Hytale mods through the CurseForge website and application. The FAQ currently states that Hytale mods are supported on PC.
Prepare the release
- Give the pack or plugin a unique, readable name and a version that matches the value in its manifest or release metadata.
- Describe exactly what changes, whether it overrides existing assets, and which Hytale release or patchline you tested.
- Include installation and removal instructions for the host, not a client-side modpack recipe.
- State dependencies, known conflicts, and whether a new world is recommended.
- Remove development files, test saves, credentials, and debug output from the upload.
- Test the archive by installing it into a clean test environment before submission.
Submit and maintain it
- Sign in to CurseForge and create the Hytale project entry.
- Upload the tested mod package and complete the requested project details.
- Submit it for moderation.
- After approval, verify that the public page shows the correct file, version, description, and supported platform.
- When Hytale updates, test the mod against the new patchline before marking a new file as compatible.
CurseForge reports more than 178,000 modders and over 26 million monthly users in 2026. Those are platform-reported audience figures, not an independent estimate of Hytale’s modding market, so treat them as context rather than a guarantee of downloads. Publishing does not remove your responsibility to document version compatibility or provide a recovery path.

Hypixel Studios has acknowledged that Hytale is behind its desired modding state, with gaps in tools, documentation, and exposed systems. It also warns that some tools are rough or inconsistent and that modding maturity varies by project type. Design around that uncertainty instead of assuming every system is stable.
The studio’s direct safety advice is: “Take frequent backups of your savegames and important creations.” Follow it before installing an unfamiliar plugin, changing an override, or updating a server. Keep at least one backup that is not inside the directory an updater can replace.
Best Value
- Use a disposable world for experiments and keep important creations in a separate save or backup.
- Change one file or feature at a time so rollback is unambiguous.
- Keep the previous working mod package when publishing an update.
- Record the Hytale protocol version beside each backup.
- If a crash or corruption appears, stop writing to the affected world, remove the newest mod change, and restore the last known-good backup before testing again.
Troubleshoot the failures beginners see most
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The pack does not appear in New World options | Wrong folder, extra directory nesting, or malformed manifest | Confirm the documented user or world mods path and recreate the pack with the Asset Editor. |
| The pack loads but the asset is unchanged | Path or asset identifier does not match the base asset | Compare the path and format with the current Asset Reference; test one override at a time. |
| A new asset is missing | The file exists but no content definition references it | Check the relevant content configuration and server log for a load error. |
| The server rejects a connection | Client and server protocol versions differ | Update or select the same exact protocol version on both sides before debugging the mod. |
| A plugin fails during startup | Wrong API dependency, outdated code, missing artifact, or runtime exception | Use the current manual’s dependency, verify the plugin location, and read the first server-log error. |
| A previously working mod breaks after an update | Early-access asset or API change | Restore the backup, test the mod alone on the new patchline, and update code or asset references against current documentation. |
| Another player cannot see the content | The host did not load the pack, or the feature assumes client-side installation | Confirm the host’s mod location and test from a clean client; Hytale’s supported model is host-side. |
A practical beginner roadmap
First session: make a visible change
Read the current creating-content guide, open the Asset Editor, create a pack with a clear manifest, and change one low-risk asset. Save it to the world’s mods folder, enable it from New World → Options, and verify the result in a disposable world.
Second session: make it repeatable
Copy the pack to the user-level Mods folder if you need it in multiple worlds. Test a clean restart, a second player, and removal of the pack. Keep a backup and note the game version and pack version.
Third session: decide whether code is necessary
If the project still needs commands, events, runtime state, or custom behavior, create a minimal Java plugin using the current server manual and API. If the requirement can be represented as content or configuration, keep the simpler Asset Pack.
Before release: use a dedicated server and publish
Bootstrap a separate test server, keep its protocol synchronized with the client, test startup and recovery, and package only the files a host needs. Submit the tested release to CurseForge for moderation with clear version, installation, dependency, and compatibility notes.
What to remember
The shortest reliable path into Hytale modding is Asset Pack first, Java plugin second. The Asset Editor handles the fragile manifest and folder layout, while a plugin belongs only where server-side logic is required. Install both types on the host, test against an exact protocol match, keep backups, and treat every early-access update as a possible compatibility change. That workflow gives you a small project you can understand before you take on code, multiplayer deployment, or public distribution.
