Hytale shows Server session token not available - cannot request auth grant when the dedicated server has not authenticated a server session. Players are rejected until the owner or an administrator completes Hytale’s device authorization flow. Run /auth login device in the live server console, approve the generated device code in a browser, select the correct profile if prompted, and verify the session with /auth status.
What the error means
The message is an authentication failure on the dedicated-server side, not a player password problem. During startup and connection handling, Hytale needs a valid server session token before it can request an authentication grant for incoming players. Without that token, the server cannot complete its server-authentication stage and refuses connections.

A typical log sequence contains:
[SEVERE] [HandshakeHandler] Server session token not available - cannot request auth grant- A follow-up message indicating that server authentication is unavailable
Hybrowse’s troubleshooting documentation describes the state plainly: “The server is not authenticated.” Citadel Servers and LOW.MS describe the same condition as missing credentials or account authentication. The practical implication is that restarting the process alone usually does not solve it; the running server must obtain a session through the authentication commands.
Before you start
Complete the repair from the machine or hosting panel that runs the dedicated server. You need:

- Access to the server’s live console, not just the game client chat window.
- A Hytale account authorized to operate that server.
- A browser on a device where you can sign in to that account.
- Outbound network access for the server and browser during the device-code exchange.
- The intended account profile selected if the account exposes more than one profile.
Keep the console open while authorizing. The URL and device code are generated for that server session. Treat both as credentials: do not post them in chat, screenshots, tickets visible to other users, or public logs.
Fix the error with device login
Use this sequence in order. The browser approval is part of the login; typing a normal player password into the server console is not a substitute.
- Start the dedicated server. Wait until its interactive console is accepting commands. If startup has already stopped on an unrelated fatal error, fix that error first; authentication commands cannot run in a process that never reached its command phase.
- Request a device login. Enter
/auth login devicein the live server console and submit it. - Copy the generated authorization details. The console prints a browser URL and a device code. Open that exact URL in a browser. Do not construct a different address, and do not reuse an old code from another server start.
- Sign in and approve. Sign in to the Hytale account that should own or administer this server, then enter or approve the displayed device code as the web flow requests. The authorization is tied to the running server instance.
- Select the intended profile when necessary. If the console lists multiple profiles, choose the required one with
/auth select <number>, replacing<number>with the profile number shown by that server. Selecting the wrong profile can leave the process authenticated to an account that does not have the expected server permissions. - Check the session. Run
/auth status. Look for an active, authenticated session rather than an unauthenticated or pending state. Keep the console output available if you need to diagnose the next startup. - Retry a connection. Once the status is active, have a player connect using the exact server address and port supplied by the operator. Players do not repeat the administrator’s device authorization.
If the first browser attempt expires, run /auth login device again and use only the newly printed URL and code. A code generated for a previous runtime may no longer be valid for the current process.

Keep authentication after a restart
A successful device login may apply only to the current runtime when credentials are not persisted. That is why a server can work immediately after authorization and show the same token error after its next stop and start.
On builds that support encrypted persistence, run:
/auth persistence Encrypted
The guides describe this mode as writing credentials to an encrypted file, such as auth.enc, and loading them on later starts. The exact filename and location depend on the server installation, so do not assume that a file in a different instance directory belongs to the process you launched.
After enabling persistence:
- Run
/auth statusand confirm that the session and persistence state are reported as active. - Stop the server through its normal shutdown path so the credential file can be written cleanly.
- Start the same server instance again.
- Check
/auth statusbefore asking players to reconnect.
LOW.MS notes that Hytale’s authentication command set is still evolving during Early Access. If the encrypted-persistence command is rejected, do not keep repeating that syntax. Run /auth --help in the installed build and use the persistence option and capitalization exposed there. A command accepted by one build may differ in another.

If the token error remains
When device login appears to succeed but the handshake error continues, diagnose the complete startup path rather than only the last console line.
Read the full startup log
Authentication can be delayed by downloader setup, an earlier startup failure, or a session-token broker stage that has not run yet. Review the log from process launch through the first failed player connection. If an earlier exception prevented initialization, the authentication message may be a consequence rather than the original fault. Resolve the earliest blocking error, restart, and perform the device login on that newly running process.
Confirm you authenticated the same instance players are joining
It is possible to authorize one installation while a panel, service file, or script launches another directory. Compare the launch path, working directory, world files, log location, and credential-file location. Run the authentication commands in the console attached to the process that owns the public address and port. A valid session in a second test instance does not provide a token to the production instance.

Check outbound connectivity
The server must reach Hytale authentication services during the device exchange and when it obtains or refreshes a session. Check firewall rules, proxy requirements, DNS resolution, and outbound restrictions imposed by the host or container. A browser on your workstation may reach the authorization page while the server itself is blocked; both paths matter. If the host requires an HTTP proxy, configure it according to that environment’s documented server settings rather than pasting proxy credentials into chat or command output.
Verify the encrypted credential file
When persistence is enabled, confirm that the encrypted credential file exists in the directory used by the running server, is readable by the service account, and can be updated by that account. Read-only mounts, incorrect ownership, full disks, container recreation, or a panel that replaces the working directory can prevent loading even though the initial login worked. Correct the storage problem, restart the same instance, and check /auth status again.
Repeat authorization for the current runtime
If credentials were deleted, became unreadable, or belong to another profile, repeat /auth login device while the current server is running. Complete the browser approval, select the intended profile, and then configure persistence using the syntax returned by /auth --help. Do not copy an auth.enc file from an unrelated account or server without understanding which account it represents.

Allow for an in-progress authentication stage
Some startup sequences print an authentication-unavailable message before all setup stages have completed. Wait for the downloader and initialization phases to finish, then run /auth status. If the status remains inactive after startup has settled, perform a fresh device login instead of assuming the transient message cleared itself.
Who needs to authenticate?
The server owner or an administrator performs the device authorization once for the server process. Players joining the server do not enter the owner’s code and should never receive the authorization URL or device code. They connect with the exact address and port provided by the operator after the server reports an active session.
If a player still cannot join after authentication is active, treat that as a separate connectivity or address problem. Verify that the player is using the current endpoint, that the server is listening on the advertised port, and that any required network forwarding is configured. The session-token error itself concerns the server’s account authentication stage.
Self-hosted server or managed hosting?
The authentication workflow is the same in principle, but operational responsibility differs. Use the following decision points when the error becomes a recurring maintenance issue.

A managed service can reduce the amount of infrastructure you maintain, but it does not remove the need to understand which account is authorized, where credentials persist, and how to access the live console. Before moving an existing world, verify that the provider allows device-code authentication and preserves the encrypted credential state through restarts.

- Use
/auth select <number>when more than one profile is listed. - Confirm an active session with
/auth status. - On supported builds, enable encrypted persistence and verify the credential file is writable.
- After every server update, check
/auth --helpif an authentication command is rejected. - Review the complete startup log for earlier downloader, initialization, or broker failures.
- Keep authorization URLs, device codes, and encrypted credential files private.
Bottom line
Server session token not available - cannot request auth grant means the dedicated server is not authenticated. Authenticate the running instance with /auth login device, approve its browser device code, select the correct profile, and verify /auth status. Configure encrypted persistence where the installed build supports it, then test one full restart. If the message returns, investigate the full startup log, outbound connectivity, credential-file permissions, and whether the commands were issued to the same instance that players are joining.
