To get more inventory space in Hytale, craft the Backpack unlocker at a Tier 1 Workbench, use it from your hand, then craft Backpack Upgrade I at a Tier 2 Workbench. Upgrade II requires restoring 100 Memories through the Forgotten Temple/Heart of Orbis progression. The unlocker is consumed when activated and permanently adds a separate backpack tab; it is not a wearable bag in the standard progression.
What the Hytale backpack actually does
The backpack is an additional inventory section rather than an item you equip in an armor or accessory slot. You craft a consumable unlocker, activate it with the secondary interaction, and the backpack tab appears in your inventory interface. The first unlock provides nine slots.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThis distinction matters when planning a trip. Items stored in the backpack are available through its tab, but they are not in the same quick-access row as your main inventory and hotbar. Put spare tools, building blocks, food reserves, and expedition materials in the backpack. Keep weapons, healing items, frequently placed blocks, and other combat or construction essentials in the main inventory or hotbar.
Hytale Team’s Update 1 patch notes, published January 17, 2026, state: “The Backpack and its upgrades are now easier to obtain.” The update changed the workbench tiers and reduced the base material requirement, so January guides that show a different recipe are superseded for the current progression.

Current backpack progression at a glance
| Stage | Workbench or gate | Materials or requirement | Capacity information |
|---|---|---|---|
| Base Backpack unlocker | Tier 1 Workbench | 8 Iron Ingots and 8 Medium Leather | Adds a nine-slot backpack tab when activated |
| Backpack Upgrade I | Tier 2 Workbench | 40 Cindercloth Scraps, 8 Cobalt Ingots, and 24 Heavy Leather | Expands the backpack to 18 slots in the cited progression |
| Backpack Upgrade II | Forgotten Temple/Heart of Orbis progression, followed by the current Workbench instruction | Restore 100 Memories | Slot total is not stated in the available progression information |
Capacity upgrades are ordered: the game checks your current backpack capacity before allowing the next upgrade. In practice, unlock the base backpack before attempting Upgrade I, and complete Upgrade I before looking for Upgrade II.
How to unlock the base backpack
1. Collect the base materials
The current listed recipe is 8 Iron Ingots and 8 Medium Leather. Iron Ingots are made by smelting iron ore in a furnace. Medium Leather is processed from hides at a Tanning Rack.

- Iron: obtain iron ore, then smelt it in a furnace until you have eight ingots.
- Medium Leather: process hides at a Tanning Rack until you have eight units.
- Workbench: make sure you can access a Tier 1 Workbench, because Update 1 moved the base recipe to that tier.
The recipe consumes the materials when you craft the unlocker. If the recipe is unavailable, check the workbench tier and verify that the materials are the processed forms shown above; raw ore and unprocessed hides do not satisfy the listed recipe.
2. Craft the Backpack unlocker
- Open a Tier 1 Workbench.
- Find the base Backpack recipe.
- Confirm that the requirement reads 8 Iron Ingots and 8 Medium Leather.
- Craft the Backpack unlocker.
The result is an activation item, not a permanent bag that must remain in your inventory. Treat it like a one-time unlock token.

3. Activate it from your hand
- Move the crafted Backpack unlocker to an active hotbar slot or another hand-held slot.
- Hold the item.
- Use the secondary interaction (the default right-click action on a mouse).
- Open your inventory and look for the new backpack tab.
Activation consumes the unlocker and permanently unlocks the tab for that character or progression. If the tab does not appear, close and reopen the inventory, confirm that the item was actually in your hand, and make sure you used the secondary interaction rather than merely selecting the item.
Backpack Upgrade I: materials, tier, and capacity
Upgrade I is the first expansion after the nine-slot backpack. Update 1 places it at a Tier 2 Workbench, not Tier 3. Its listed recipe requires:
PC Slower Than It Used to Be?

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minute- 40 Cindercloth Scraps
- 8 Cobalt Ingots
- 24 Heavy Leather
Crafting procedure
- Unlock and activate the base Backpack first.
- Gather 40 Cindercloth Scraps, 8 Cobalt Ingots, and 24 Heavy Leather.
- Use a Tier 2 Workbench.
- Select Backpack Upgrade I and check that the recipe recognizes your current capacity.
- Craft the upgrade and apply or activate it according to the interaction shown by the workbench.
The cited progression expands the backpack from nine to 18 slots. If Upgrade I is missing from a lower-tier workbench, that is expected; upgrading the workbench is part of the requirement. If the recipe remains locked at Tier 2, verify that the base unlock was activated rather than merely crafted.
Backpack Upgrade II: the 100-Memory gate
Upgrade II is tied to the Forgotten Temple and Heart of Orbis progression rather than a simple material-only recipe. You must restore 100 Memories. After that milestone, use the current Workbench recipe or claim instruction presented by the game.

Recommended order
- Complete the relevant Forgotten Temple/Heart of Orbis objectives until the game records 100 restored Memories.
- Return to the progression or workbench interface that presents Backpack Upgrade II.
- Read the current instruction carefully: depending on the current version, the upgrade may be crafted or claimed through that interface.
- Apply the upgrade only after confirming that the base backpack and Upgrade I are already active.
The available progression information does not establish Upgrade II’s final slot count. Do not assume a particular number from a video or an older guide; check the in-game description for the version and mode you are playing.

Why older guides show different recipes
Some January guides list 16 Medium Leather for the base backpack and place Upgrade I at a Tier 3 Workbench. Those values describe the pre-Update 1 progression. The official Update 1 notes reduced the base requirement to eight Medium Leather and moved the first upgrade to Tier 2.
| Recipe detail | Older value seen in early guides | Current Update 1 value |
|---|---|---|
| Base Backpack leather | 16 Medium Leather | 8 Medium Leather |
| Backpack Upgrade I workbench | Tier 3 | Tier 2 |
| Base Backpack workbench | May be shown differently depending on the guide | Tier 1 |
When a guide and your game disagree, prioritize the recipe displayed by your current client and the Update 1 patch values above. A recipe can also differ if a later balance update changes the progression, so check the version label and the date attached to any community guide.
How much inventory space do you really gain?
The initial backpack adds nine slots, and Upgrade I raises the backpack section to 18 slots in the cited progression. One guide counts 36 main-inventory stacks excluding the hotbar and 45 total after adding the initial nine backpack slots. Those totals are version-specific editorial guidance rather than a universal promise for every mode, interface change, or future patch.

| Inventory area | Published figure | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Main inventory, excluding hotbar | 36 stacks | Guide-specific count; may vary by version or mode |
| Initial backpack | 9 slots | Added when the base unlocker is activated |
| Combined count after base unlock | 45 total | 36 main-inventory stacks plus nine backpack slots in that guide’s version |
| Backpack after Upgrade I | 18 slots | Capacity stated for the cited progression |
| Backpack after Upgrade II | Not stated | Use the in-game upgrade description rather than guessing |
A practical loading plan
- Hotbar: weapon, primary tool, healing item, building block, light source, and any item you must reach without opening the inventory.
- Main inventory: materials you expect to use during the next few minutes, spare tool durability, and items that need sorting or crafting soon.
- Backpack: reserve tools, extra blocks, expedition supplies, uncommon crafting ingredients, and overflow stacks.
- Before leaving: move only the items needed for the outing into the main inventory; leave long-term storage in a base container rather than filling both sections.
The separate tab is most useful as a reserve. It gives you more capacity without forcing every item into your quick-access layout, but it still requires an inventory-tab change when you need something stored there.
Troubleshooting the unlock and upgrades
The Backpack recipe is not visible
- Confirm that you are using a Tier 1 Workbench for the base unlocker.
- Check that you have processed materials: Iron Ingots, not ore, and Medium Leather, not raw hides.
- Verify that the character has reached whatever basic crafting progression your current world requires to expose the workbench recipe.
- Look for a version mismatch if a guide tells you to use a different tier.
The item was crafted but no backpack tab appears
- Place the unlocker in your hand or an active hotbar slot.
- Use the secondary/right-click interaction; selecting the item alone does not activate it.
- Reopen the inventory after activation.
- Check whether the unlocker was consumed. If it remains in your inventory, the interaction did not register.
Upgrade I is locked
- Use a Tier 2 Workbench.
- Confirm that the base backpack has already been activated.
- Check each ingredient: 40 Cindercloth Scraps, 8 Cobalt Ingots, and 24 Heavy Leather.
- If the game says your capacity is insufficient, complete the earlier backpack stage first; capacity upgrades are ordered.
Upgrade II cannot be claimed
- Check the Memory total in the Forgotten Temple/Heart of Orbis progression.
- Make sure the recorded total is 100 restored Memories, not merely progress toward that amount.
- Return to the current workbench or progression screen after reaching the milestone and follow the displayed craft-or-claim instruction.
- Do not rely on an older recipe screenshot if the current interface presents a different method.
Built-in progression versus a backpack mod
The built-in system is part of Hytale’s normal progression and uses workbench tiers, materials, and Memories. A mod can change the available capacity, but it introduces version and installation dependencies that do not apply to the native unlock.
| Comparison point | Hytale built-in backpack | Extended Backpacks mod |
|---|---|---|
| Capacity added | 9 slots initially; 18 after Upgrade I in the cited progression; Upgrade II total not stated | Listing says it adds additional backpack inventory-slot upgrades; exact capacity depends on the mod configuration and version |
| Progression gate | Workbench tiers, materials, and 100 restored Memories for Upgrade II | Uses the mod’s own upgrade and configuration rules |
| Version support | Ships with the game’s current progression | Requires a compatible game and mod version; the listing reported a latest update of September 14, 2026 |
| Persistence and death behavior | Native progression behavior | Must be checked against the mod’s documentation and the server or world setup |
| Installation requirement | None beyond the game | Mod installation and any required loader or server support |
| Listing activity | Official game feature | CurseForge/Overwolf listing showed 113,818 downloads in 2026 |
Use the native backpack when you want the progression designed for the current game version or when playing on a server that does not permit mods. Consider a mod only when you control the installation and have confirmed compatibility with your Hytale build and world or server rules. Extended Backpacks is digital game software, not a physical backpack or hardware accessory, and it does not increase capacity in an unmodified client.
What not to buy for more Hytale slots
Physical bags, storage hardware, books, and other real-world products cannot add inventory slots to Hytale. The only capacity changes covered here are the in-game Backpack unlocker, its upgrades, and compatible game modifications. If your goal is more in-game space, spend your effort on the Tier 1 and Tier 2 recipes and the 100-Memory progression rather than looking for a physical accessory.
