The HyperX OMEN 16 VALORANT Edition is a capable, fast-refresh gaming laptop whose strongest reason to buy is its VALORANT-inspired design—not a special in-game advantage. Tom’s Guide’s review of a US configuration found VALORANT enjoyable, with a bright 240Hz display, but also noted a tight keyboard, short battery life, gaming noise, and a high price. Whether it is worth buying depends on the exact regional SKU, the price you can get, and how much you value the themed finish.
What the VALORANT Edition is—and what it is not
HP announced the laptop on May 26, 2026, as a collaboration with Riot Games. Its game-inspired colors, keyboard accents, and hidden Easter eggs are the main distinction from a standard gaming laptop. HP executive Josephine Tan described the design goal as making it “feel like an extension of the VALORANT experience.” HP’s announcement does not establish a gameplay feature or performance advantage unique to the edition.
It is a 16-inch gaming laptop with a high-refresh-rate display and high-end components, but the name does not identify one universal configuration. HP’s US announcement describes maximum available specifications, Tom’s Guide tested a particular US unit, and the UK store lists a different SKU. Check the country and full SKU before comparing prices or buying.

HP’s “up to” specifications describe the top end of its US announcement, not every laptop sold. The UK SKU’s 8GB of graphics memory and 16GB of system RAM differ from the US review unit and the US announcement’s maximum graphics configuration. The UK product listing also specifies Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6.0, an 83Wh battery, and a 280W adapter. Tom’s Guide lists Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6.0, and three USB-A ports, one USB-C port, HDMI 2.1, a headphone jack, and Ethernet for its review unit. Do not assume every regional SKU has identical internals or included details.

How well does it run VALORANT?
Tom’s Guide reports that its Ryzen 9, RTX 5070, 32GB US review unit felt capable in VALORANT, including with settings raised, and that playing was enjoyable. The reviewer also found the 240Hz LCD bright and measured 525 nits on the review unit. These are review impressions and a measurement for that unit, not a guarantee for every configuration or brightness setting.
A 240Hz panel can refresh up to 240 times per second, but that figure is the display’s ceiling, not a promise that every game will render at 240 frames per second. In Tom’s Guide’s 1080p tests, the laptop recorded 44 FPS in Assassin’s Creed: Shadows at Ultra High, 33 FPS in Black Myth: Wukong at Cinematic, and 35 FPS in Cyberpunk 2077 at the review’s stated settings. Those results are specific to its test setup; game, settings, resolution, configuration, and software changes affect performance. They are not VALORANT frame-rate figures.

For a competitive player, the practical takeaway is that the reviewed unit handled VALORANT well in the reviewer’s experience and has a fast-refresh display. The evidence here does not establish a specific VALORANT FPS figure or prove that the themed model outperforms another laptop with comparable components. If maximum frame rates matter, look for tests of the exact SKU using the same game settings and resolution you plan to use.

What are the main trade-offs?
Keyboard comfort
Tom’s Guide found the built-in keyboard tight. That matters if you plan to play long sessions on the laptop itself or use it for substantial typing. An external keyboard may be a practical workaround at a desk, but it adds equipment and does not change the built-in keyboard’s feel.

Portability and battery
Tom’s Guide measured its review unit at 5.5 pounds and described battery life as short. HyperX lists the separate UK SKU at 2.47kg, so use the weight for the exact model and region you are considering. The available review material does not give a battery runtime; plan around access to power rather than assuming a particular number of unplugged gaming hours.
Noise and heat
The reviewer says the laptop became loud depending on the game. In one Metro Exodus Enhanced Edition lab run, the underside peaked at 87.5 degrees. That is a single reported measurement, not a complete thermal profile or a temperature that should be generalized to every game, workload, or unit.

HP’s US announcement gave a launch preorder price of $3,049.99, while Tom’s Guide’s US review-unit specification table lists $3,049. The UK store showed £1,999 including VAT when accessed October 7, 2026. These are distinct regional figures from different listings and dates, not a direct like-for-like price comparison; listings and prices can change. Decide whether the themed finish is worth its price to you, and compare the current cost of the exact SKU against its components and alternatives.
How to decide whether to buy it
- Match the listing to your region. Confirm the full SKU and whether the price includes local taxes. Do not assume the US announcement, US review unit, and UK listing describe the same machine.
- Check the components that affect your use. Verify CPU, graphics model and VRAM, system RAM, storage, and display resolution and refresh rate in the seller’s listing. In particular, the UK SKU described above has an RTX 5070 with 8GB GDDR7 and 16GB RAM, unlike the tested 32GB US unit.
- Compare like with like. For gaming performance, use benchmarks for the same game, resolution, and settings, and do not infer equal results from the RTX 5070 name alone. For everyday use, weigh keyboard comfort, gaming noise, portability, and time away from a charger.
- Pay for the theme only if it matters to you. The VALORANT styling and hidden details are the edition’s defining appeal. If you do not value them, focus on whether the underlying configuration and current price make sense for your needs.
Verdict
The HyperX OMEN 16 VALORANT Edition makes the most sense for a VALORANT fan who wants its themed design, a 240Hz screen, and the capabilities of the exact configuration being sold. Tom’s Guide’s tested US unit delivered enjoyable VALORANT play, but its high cost, tight keyboard, short battery life, weight, and situational noise are meaningful compromises. Buyers should verify the precise SKU and current regional price before treating any headline specification or price as applicable to their listing.
