Buy the wired HyperX Cloud III for a new purchase if you need flexible 3.5mm, USB-C and USB-A connections, a clearly specified detachable microphone, and broad stated compatibility. Choose the Cloud II when it is substantially cheaper, you prefer its familiar control-box design, or the exact Cloud II package better matches your setup. The available evidence does not establish the Cloud III as a universal sound-quality upgrade: reviewer impressions are subjective, and no controlled, same-condition Cloud II-versus-Cloud III listening test was identified.

Quick verdict

Both are closed-back, over-ear wired gaming headsets built around 53mm drivers, memory-foam comfort and detachable or removable microphone hardware. The practical difference is how clearly each model documents its connections, controls and included accessories.

Choose this model Why it fits Check before ordering
Cloud III Three documented connection options, USB-C-to-USB-A adapter in the box, updated microphone details, earcup controls and broad listed device compatibility. Whether your console, controller or phone exposes the features you want through 3.5mm, USB-C or USB-A.
Cloud II Lower sale pricing can make it the better value, and its established feature set includes virtual 7.1 surround, a control box and a detachable noise-cancelling microphone. The exact wired revision, included accessories and condition of the seller listing; the catalog specification is not fully variant-specific.

At the retrieved US listings on October 13, 2026, the Cloud III displayed at $57.99 (regular displayed price $99.99), while the Cloud II displayed at $49.99 (regular displayed price $79.99). PC Gamer’s October 2026 deal roundup gave Amazon examples of $57.99 for Cloud III and $47.48 for Cloud II. Those are dated, volatile snapshots rather than guaranteed prices.

What the two wired headsets actually include

Cloud III: the more explicitly documented package

HyperX describes Cloud III as an evolution of Cloud II. Its official listing specifies angled, retuned 53mm dynamic drivers, a closed-back over-ear design, an aluminum frame, memory-foam and leatherette cushions, and earcup audio controls. The microphone is a detachable 10mm noise-cancelling design with an LED mute indicator.

HyperX Cloud III – Wired Gaming Headset, PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Angled 53mm Drivers, Spatial Audio, Memory Foam, Durable Frame, Ultra-Clear 10mm Mic, USB-C, USB-A, 3.5mm – Black
  • Comfort is King: Comfort’s in the Cloud III’s DNA. Built for gamers who can’t have an uncomfortable headset ruin the flow of their full-combo, disrupt their speedrun, or knocking them out of the zone.
  • Audio Tuned for Your Entertainment: Angled 53mm drivers have been tuned by HyperX audio engineers to provide the optimal listening experience that accents the dynamic sounds of gaming.
  • Upgraded Microphone for Clarity and Accuracy: Captures high-quality audio for clear voice chat and calls. The mic is noise-cancelling and features a built-in mesh filter to omit disruptive sounds and LED mic mute indicator lets you know when you’re muted.
  • Durability, for the Toughest of Battles: The headset is flexible and features an aluminum frame so it’s resilient against travel, accidents, mishaps, and your ‘level-headed’ reactions to losses and defeat screens.

The listed box contents are the headset, detachable microphone, USB dongle, USB-C-to-USB-A adapter and quick-start guide. HyperX lists a two-year warranty. The official specification gives a 10Hz–21kHz frequency response and a listed weight of 0.67lb, or 0.70lb with the microphone attached.

Cloud II: a familiar design with less variant detail

HyperX’s US headset catalog lists the wired Cloud II with virtual 7.1 surround sound, 53mm drivers, an advanced audio control box and a detachable noise-cancelling microphone. The catalog page is less detailed than the Cloud III product page, so do not assume every Cloud II listing has identical accessories or controls.

A separate HyperX support page titled “Cloud Specifications” lists 53mm drivers, closed construction, a 15Hz–25kHz frequency response, 60 ohms, 350g with microphone and cable, a 3.5mm connection, and microphone specifications. That page does not clearly identify the exact Cloud II wired revision. Treat those figures as support-page Cloud specifications, not a guarantee that every Cloud II revision uses them.

Connections and device compatibility

Cloud III offers the clearest out-of-box flexibility

The Cloud III is documented with three connection types: 3.5mm analog, USB-C and USB-A. Its stated compatibility includes PC, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, Mac and mobile devices. The USB-C-to-USB-A adapter means a computer or console with only a traditional USB-A port can use the supplied USB connection without buying another adapter.

That broad list does not mean every function works identically everywhere. A console controller may expose only analog audio through its headset jack. A phone may lack a 3.5mm socket. USB volume, mute behavior or any software processing can depend on the platform, port and operating-system support. Confirm the exact port on your controller or handheld and whether you want analog audio or USB operation before ordering.

Cloud II is simpler if your setup is already 3.5mm-based

The Cloud II support-page specifications identify a 3.5mm connection, while the catalog description highlights its control box and virtual 7.1 feature. That makes it a straightforward choice for a controller, laptop or other device with a compatible 3.5mm jack. The trade-off is less explicit documentation of native USB-C and USB-A options in the cited Cloud II material.

Connection decision by platform

Your setup More practical starting point Reason
Desktop PC with USB-A and 3.5mm Either Both can suit a conventional PC setup; Cloud III adds the option of USB-C with its adapter.
USB-C laptop, phone or tablet Cloud III USB-C is explicitly listed and included in the documented connection options.
Console controller using a 3.5mm jack Either, after checking the exact listing Analog compatibility is the relevant requirement; USB features may not be available through the controller.
Several devices with mixed USB ports Cloud III The supplied USB-C connection and USB-C-to-USB-A adapter reduce the need for extra hardware.
Only a known-good 3.5mm source Cloud II can be sufficient Its support-page specifications list 3.5mm, and you may not benefit from Cloud III’s additional connection options.

Microphone and on-headset controls

Cloud III’s microphone specification is more precise

Cloud III’s official description calls out a 10mm noise-cancelling microphone, detachable construction and an LED mute indicator. Its volume and mute controls are on the earcup, so you can adjust audio or silence the mic without reaching for a separate inline module.

GamesRadar’s tested Cloud III unit reported clear voice capture and described the detachable microphone, 3.5mm/USB cabling and onboard controls. TechRadar’s 2026 roundup also praised microphone clarity and noise rejection. Those are reviewer judgments from their own units, not a controlled comparison against Cloud II.

Cloud II uses a control-box approach

HyperX’s catalog copy advertises a detachable noise-cancelling microphone and advanced audio control box for Cloud II, including virtual 7.1 surround sound. Because the cited listing does not provide a complete revision-by-revision specification, check product photos and the seller’s contents list if the control box, button layout or cable arrangement matters to you.

For voice chat, the meaningful questions are whether the microphone is detachable, where mute is located, and whether your platform recognizes the USB or analog path you intend to use. A nominal microphone size or noise-cancelling label alone cannot guarantee identical results in every room.

Comfort, materials and long-session use

Both product families are marketed around memory-foam comfort, and both use closed-back, over-ear earcups that physically surround the ear. Cloud III’s official specification identifies an aluminum frame. The lower listed Cloud III weight can look attractive on paper, but headband tension, clamp force, ear shape and glasses make comfort highly individual.

GamesRadar reported that its Cloud III unit remained comfortable during long sessions. That is useful evidence about one reviewer’s fit, not a promise for every wearer. If you are sensitive to clamp pressure or heat, buy from a seller with a practical return period and test the fit before discarding packaging.

  • Choose Cloud III for: the documented aluminum frame, current design details and a reviewer report of comfortable extended use.
  • Choose Cloud II for: a familiar fit you have already used comfortably or a materially lower price that leaves room in your budget.
  • Do not infer comfort from weight alone: the Cloud II support-page figure includes microphone and cable, while the Cloud III listing separates headset weight from headset-plus-microphone weight.

Sound: what the evidence does and does not prove

Cloud III’s tuning is described, not universally superior

Cloud III uses angled, retuned 53mm drivers and is specified for 10Hz–21kHz response. TechRadar praised its detailed sound and bass but listed the soundstage as a downside. Those comments describe that reviewer’s evaluation; they do not establish that every listener will prefer Cloud III to every Cloud II revision.

Cloud II’s numbers cannot settle the choice

The Cloud II support-page specification lists 53mm drivers and a 15Hz–25kHz range, but frequency-response boundaries and driver diameter do not predict the complete listening experience. Ear-cup seal, tuning, equalization, source device and personal preference matter more than a wider-looking range on a product page.

Why there is no definitive winner here

No controlled, same-condition Cloud II-versus-Cloud III listening test was identified in the available material. Therefore, treat Cloud III’s sound as a potential preference based on its retuned design and reviewer impressions, not as an objective upgrade that makes Cloud II obsolete. If competitive positional cues, music detail or bass balance are your priority, use a returnable purchase and judge the headset with your own games and recordings.

Price and value in the United States

On October 13, 2026, HyperX’s US pages displayed Cloud III at $57.99 against a displayed regular price of $99.99, and Cloud II at $49.99 against a displayed regular price of $79.99. PC Gamer’s October 2026 deal roundup listed Amazon examples of $57.99 for Cloud III and $47.48 for Cloud II.

Model Observed price snapshot What the number means
Cloud III $57.99 at HyperX US; $57.99 Amazon example in PC Gamer’s October 2026 roundup Dated US listings; seller, color, stock, region and promotion can change the price.
Cloud II $49.99 at HyperX US; $47.48 Amazon example in PC Gamer’s October 2026 roundup Dated US listings; the catalog page does not fully identify the exact variant.

At those snapshots, the difference was small enough that Cloud III’s extra documented connection options and adapter could justify paying more. If Cloud II becomes substantially cheaper, its value case strengthens—provided the exact listing includes the microphone and control hardware you expect. Compare both models in the same country, on the same date, with shipping, return terms and seller reputation included.

How to choose in five steps

  1. List every source device. Write down whether you will use a PC, Mac, PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, phone or tablet, and identify each available port.
  2. Choose the signal path. Select 3.5mm if you need controller-based analog audio; select USB-C or USB-A when your device supports USB headset audio and you want the supplied Cloud III dongle or adapter.
  3. Decide where controls should live. Cloud III places volume and mute on the earcup. Cloud II’s advertised control box may be preferable if you like a separate inline module.
  4. Set your price threshold. If the Cloud III is only a few dollars more, its documented flexibility is easier to justify. If Cloud II is deeply discounted, verify its exact revision and contents before choosing it for value.
  5. Use the return policy as your sound test. Because no controlled head-to-head listening result establishes a universal winner, test comfort, microphone performance and game audio with your own equipment.

Setup instructions

Cloud III over USB

  1. Connect the headset’s USB-C lead or dongle to a USB-C port. Use the supplied USB-C-to-USB-A adapter for a USB-A port.
  2. In your computer or console audio settings, select the Cloud III as both output and microphone device if the platform presents separate choices.
  3. Set the system output level, then use the earcup volume control for normal adjustments.
  4. Attach the microphone fully and orient it near the corner of your mouth. Use the headset mute control and confirm the LED indicator changes.
  5. Make a short recording or join a private voice channel to verify that the intended microphone, rather than a laptop or controller mic, is active.

Cloud III or Cloud II over 3.5mm

  1. Insert the headset plug into the device’s combined headset jack or the controller’s 3.5mm port.
  2. Choose the controller or analog headset output in the platform’s audio menu if it does not switch automatically.
  3. Attach the microphone and check game-chat input separately from game audio.
  4. If the device has separate headphone and microphone sockets, use the appropriate splitter or adapter only if it is supplied with your exact package; do not assume every Cloud II listing includes the same accessory.

Common buying and setup mistakes

Assuming every Cloud II listing is identical

Cloud II catalog copy and the broad support page do not form a complete variant-specific specification sheet. Check the exact model name, photos, included control box, microphone and cable before paying, especially when buying old stock or a marketplace listing.

Expecting USB features through a controller

A headset can be broadly compatible with a console while still offering different controls through USB and 3.5mm. If you connect through a controller, the controller’s analog path determines what reaches the headset. Test chat, mute and volume on the intended connection rather than relying only on the platform list.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reading frequency response as a sound-quality score

The Cloud II’s 15Hz–25kHz support-page range and Cloud III’s 10Hz–21kHz official range are not scores. They do not reveal tonal balance, imaging, distortion or how the ear cushions seal around your ears.

Comparing a sale price with a regular price as if both were permanent

Displayed regular prices and deal prices can change with stock, seller, color, region and promotion. Record the final checkout price and return terms on the date you buy.

Leaving the microphone partially inserted

Both models rely on a detachable microphone connection. If voice is intermittent or silent, remove and firmly reseat the boom, then verify the selected input device and hardware mute state before changing software settings.

Which headset should you buy?

Buy Cloud III when flexibility is the priority

Cloud III is the safer default for a new buyer who uses several device types, wants USB-C and USB-A options in one package, values a documented 10mm detachable microphone with LED mute feedback, or prefers controls on the earcup. Its aluminum frame, supplied adapter and two-year listed warranty add practical clarity to the purchase.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Buy Cloud II when the price or familiar layout wins

Cloud II remains a sensible wired headset when its exact listing is much cheaper, you already know its fit, or you specifically prefer the advertised control-box and virtual 7.1 arrangement. Confirm the revision and included accessories, because the available catalog description does not establish one exhaustive specification for every Cloud II unit.

Do not buy either solely for a specification number

Driver diameter, frequency-response range and a surround-sound label cannot determine which headset will sound best to you. The decisive factors are your connection, platform controls, microphone expectations, fit and current price. Cloud III is the more straightforward all-round recommendation; Cloud II is the value alternative when the deal and configuration are clearly better.
