The HyperDrive Next Thunderbolt 5 Dock is most compelling if you want a Thunderbolt 5 hub with an internal NVMe SSD enclosure and a way to connect two PCs through Thunderbolt Share. Its tradeoffs are a limited selection of ports for a premium dock, no built-in HDMI or DisplayPort, modest power for attached devices, and reviewer-reported slowdowns when its SSD and Ethernet are heavily loaded together. It suits a particular kind of desk better than it serves as an all-purpose expansion hub.
What makes the HyperDrive Next Thunderbolt 5 Dock different?
Its defining combination is an M.2 NVMe SSD enclosure built into the dock and Intel Thunderbolt Share certification. The enclosure lets you add internal storage without dedicating a separate external drive to the desk. Thunderbolt Share is intended to let two computers communicate for file transfers and peripheral sharing; Windows Central describes using the dock in such a setup. That workflow is most relevant if you regularly move between two PCs or share desk devices between them. Windows Central’s review covers that use case.
Certification alone does not guarantee the same experience on every computer. Thunderbolt Share features and display capabilities depend on the host computers and setup, so check your specific PCs and current software requirements before relying on it.

What ports does it have?
Macworld’s August 4, 2026 review lists 10 connections, in addition to the M.2 enclosure. These are review-reported specifications; confirm current ratings with the manufacturer if exact power or speed figures are essential to your setup.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Connection | Quantity and reported rating | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Upstream Thunderbolt 5 | 1; up to 80Gbps and 140W to the host | Connects the dock to the laptop and supplies host power. |
| Downstream Thunderbolt 5 | 3; up to 80Gbps and 15W each | For peripherals, storage, or displays; 15W is limited for charging some devices. |
| USB-A | 4; up to 10Gbps, with one port rated at 7.5W and three at 4.5W | Useful for legacy USB accessories, but the reported power ratings are modest. |
| 2.5Gb Ethernet | 1 | Provides wired networking. |
| 3.5mm combo audio jack | 1 | For compatible headphones or headsets. |
| M.2 SSD enclosure | 1 | Accepts compatible NVMe drives; see the storage section below. |
The dock has no native HDMI or DisplayPort output. Connect a monitor over Thunderbolt/USB-C, or use an adapter or cable suited to the monitor’s inputs and required resolution and refresh rate. The number of displays you can run is host-dependent, so check the capabilities of your computer rather than assuming the dock sets the limit. Macworld’s review lists the port configuration and display caveats.
What size M.2 SSD fits, and is 16TB realistic?
Macworld reports that the enclosure accepts NVMe M.2 drives in 2230, 2242, 2260, and 2280 lengths, with a stated capacity ceiling of up to 16TB. That is a maximum claim, not an included drive or a practical capacity recommendation: the review notes that 16TB drives were extraordinarily expensive when it was published. Check that a drive is NVMe, not merely the right physical length, and confirm current compatibility and pricing before buying.

- 5-in-1 USB-C Hub: Experience comprehensive connectivity featuring a Power Delivery input, two USB-A 2.0 ports, a USB-A 3.0 port, and an HDMI port. (Note: The USB-C power delivery input port is only for connecting an external wall charger to power your laptop and cannot power peripheral devices.)
- 90W Pass-Through Charging: Achieve optimal charging with 90W pass-through power to your laptop, supported by a total input of 100W, with the hub reserving 10W for operational efficiency. (Note: Wall charger not included.)
- Quick Data Transfers: Accelerate your productivity with rapid data transfers using a high-speed 5Gbps USB 3.0 port and two 480Mbps USB 2.0 ports.
- 4K HDMI Display: Enhance your visual experience with a hub capable of delivering 4K resolution at 30Hz in both mirror and extend modes. Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Opening the enclosure hatch reportedly requires a PH1 screwdriver. Macworld’s review said one was not included in the box, so have a compatible screwdriver available if you plan to install a drive.

Macworld reports a 180W power supply and up to 140W delivered to the connected host laptop. Downstream power is lower: the Thunderbolt ports are rated at 15W each, while USB-A power is reported as 4.5W on three ports and 7.5W on one. That arrangement prioritizes powering the laptop over fast-charging devices connected to the dock. If you expect the dock to charge a phone, tablet, or other accessory quickly, compare its required charging rate with the relevant port’s rating.

What happens when the SSD and Ethernet are used together?
Windows Central reported seeing SSD and Ethernet speed drops when both were used simultaneously in its review. TechRadar also described performance limits for the M.2 and 2.5GbE paths under load. These are reviewer observations, not proof that every dock or workload will behave identically; they matter most if your work depends on sustained transfers to the dock’s internal SSD while also using wired networking heavily. Windows Central and TechRadar discuss performance in their reviews.

It makes sense if
- You have a Thunderbolt 5 computer and want a desk dock with an internal NVMe storage option.
- You regularly work across two PCs and can use a Thunderbolt Share setup supported by your computers.
- Your monitors connect by Thunderbolt/USB-C or you are prepared to select the right display adapter.
- You do not depend on high-wattage charging from the dock’s downstream ports.
Look elsewhere if
- You need built-in HDMI or DisplayPort, an SD card reader, or a broader range of connections without adapters.
- You expect the dock to fast-charge several attached devices.
- Your workflow routinely saturates the internal SSD and wired Ethernet at the same time and cannot tolerate potential slowdowns.
Reviews identify the Kensington SD7100T5 EQ Pro and UGREEN Maxidok models as higher-port-count alternatives; TechRadar also discusses the CalDigit TS5 Plus, which it describes as a 20-port dock without an M.2 slot. Exact port layouts and features vary by model, so compare the specific version you are considering rather than relying on a family name. The useful comparison points are integrated storage, native display outputs, Ethernet, host charging, downstream charging, and Thunderbolt Share support. Macworld and TechRadar discuss these alternatives.
