What multiplayer content works in split-screen?
Split-screen is not limited to a separate practice mode. Digital Cybercherries describes complete split-screen functionality in both offline and online play. That support includes the story campaign, all PvP modes, and party game modes.
The named PvP choices are:
- Deathmatch: a free-for-all combat format.
- Team Deathmatch: teams compete for eliminations.
- Capture the Battery: teams contest the objective described by the mode name.
- Infection: players participate in an infection-style game.
- King of the Hill: players fight to control a designated area.

- Choose TV or tabletop mode. In handheld mode, the built-in display is available to one console, but a group sharing one screen will normally have a better view on a television or the Switch’s tabletop display.
- Prepare one compatible controller for each local player. Pair or attach the controllers before entering the multiplayer screen. A single Joy-Con can be a controller in games that support that arrangement, but the game and Nintendo’s accessory warning determine whether your particular combination is sufficient. If you plan to use four players, have four usable controller inputs ready.
- Launch the game and open its multiplayer area. Look for the current local, split-screen, or same-system option in the game’s main menu. The wording may differ between builds.
- Have each player join when the game prompts for an input. The joining action is controlled by the current game UI rather than a permanently documented button sequence. If a controller does nothing, verify that the Switch recognizes it in the console’s controller settings, then return to the game.
- Select the activity. Choose the story campaign, a named PvP mode, or a party game mode. Split-screen support applies to these categories, subject to the options visible in your current version.
- Start the session after every player is displayed. If fewer than four people are playing, leave the remaining player slots unused rather than trying to add more devices to the same console.
Can two people play HYPERCHARGE on one Switch?
Yes. Two players fit within the single-system limit and can play together in split-screen. The same arrangement also scales to three or four players when each person has a compatible controller and the display is large enough for the group.
What if the second player cannot join?
- Confirm that the second controller is paired with the Switch, not another nearby console.
- Check whether the controller has enough charge and is assigned to a separate player input.
- Return to the game’s multiplayer screen after pairing; some games only scan for additional inputs at that point.
- Try TV or tabletop mode if the console is currently being used in a configuration that limits available controllers or visibility.
- Restart the game if the controller works in the Switch HOME menu but is not detected in the lobby.
How to play online co-op
Online multiplayer uses an internet connection and a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership. Nintendo’s eShop wording is explicit: “Any online play modes require a paid membership to Nintendo Switch Online.” The requirement applies to the account or console profile used to enter the online mode; check the membership status before troubleshooting the game lobby.
- Confirm Nintendo Switch Online access. Make sure the profile that will play online has an active paid membership. Without it, the online option will not provide a usable session.
- Connect the Switch to the internet. Use the console’s network settings and confirm that other online services work. A local wireless session between nearby consoles is a different mode and does not substitute for internet access when you select online play.
- Open the game’s online multiplayer option. Select the online category shown in the current game build, then use its available room, lobby, or joining controls.
- Invite or join the other players using the game’s current prompts. Official sources confirm the supported player count and split-screen capability, but they do not publish a reliable, version-specific sequence of button presses for creating a room. Follow the labels shown on screen rather than an outdated walkthrough.
- Choose a supported activity. The story campaign and PvP modes can run in split-screen during online play. Remote players can therefore join a cooperative campaign, while people sharing one Switch can participate from the same screen.
Does online co-op support split-screen?
Yes. The developer specifically says split-screen works both offline and online. A household can have two or more players on one Switch join an online session with people using other consoles, provided the local group stays within the one-system limit and the online session stays within its eight-player limit.

How to combine couch co-op with online players
A mixed session is useful when some friends are in the same room and others are remote. Start by organizing the local players on one Switch, then use that console’s online multiplayer option to enter the remote session.

- Connect and assign a controller to every person playing locally.
- Enter the game’s split-screen-capable online mode.
- Join or create the online session through the current lobby controls.
- Have remote players join until the session reaches the game’s online capacity.
The two limits apply at the same time: the shared console cannot contribute more than four local players, and the complete online session cannot exceed eight players. The developer’s statement that online split-screen includes the campaign and PvP modes means the mixed group is not restricted to a special online-only activity.
How local wireless differs from same-console play
Local wireless is for nearby players who have separate Switch consoles. It is not the same as four people sharing one system. Nintendo lists up to eight players for local wireless, while a single system supports up to four.

Choose local wireless when each player wants an individual screen or when the group is larger than the single-console limit. Every participating console must have the game available and must be close enough for the local wireless connection. Nintendo’s player-count listing establishes the eight-player capacity, but the official material reviewed does not provide a detailed room-creation button sequence, so use the local-wireless option and prompts shown by the current game version.

The game has a complete offline experience. Digital Cybercherries says players can use commandable player bots and unlock in-game content while offline.
- Start the game without selecting an online multiplayer mode.
- Choose the offline or solo path shown in the current menu.
- Use the available bot controls if you want additional teammates or opponents.
- Play the story or another offline activity and earn the unlocks available in that mode.
Offline play avoids the Nintendo Switch Online membership requirement because it does not use online play. It also avoids the need for other consoles, an internet connection, or a shared online lobby.

Controller, display, and accessory requirements
Controllers
Every local participant needs a compatible controller input. The number of controllers, the way Joy-Con units are divided, and whether a particular third-party controller works depend on the Switch configuration and the game’s compatibility. Nintendo warns that additional accessories may be required for the supported play modes, so count your available controller inputs before inviting a large group.
Display choices
TV mode is the most practical choice for a group around one screen. Tabletop mode works when the console is placed on its stand and players can view the display comfortably. Handheld mode is supported by the Switch version, but a small shared screen becomes harder to read as more split-screen panels are added.
Separate consoles
Local wireless and online sessions use each console’s own display. That removes the need to divide one screen, but it also changes the setup: each player needs access to a compatible Switch, the game, and the connection type selected in the menu.

Troubleshooting checklist
The online option is unavailable
- Check that the active Switch profile has a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership.
- Confirm that the console is connected to the internet rather than only to a nearby local-wireless network.
- Restart the game after the membership or network connection becomes active.
The session has too many players
- For one-console play, remove extra local participants until no more than four people share that Switch.
- For local wireless or online play, keep the complete group at eight or fewer.
- Remember that adding several people on one console still counts them against both the local-system and overall session limits.
A controller works outside the game but not in the lobby
- Pair the controller before opening the game’s multiplayer screen.
- Check the Switch’s controller assignment and battery level.
- Return to the main menu or restart the game so it can rescan controller inputs.
- Use the current on-screen join prompt; the official sources do not establish a universal button press that applies to every build.
The split-screen view is difficult to use
- Move to TV mode or place the console in a better tabletop position.
- Reduce the number of local players if the group does not need all available slots.
- Use separate-console local wireless when each player needs a full-size individual view.
What the official information does—and does not—confirm
The supported player counts, split-screen scope, offline bots, offline unlocks, named PvP modes, and Nintendo Switch Online requirement are established by Nintendo and Digital Cybercherries. The official pages reviewed do not establish a dependable sequence of exact button presses or fixed menu labels for adding a second player, creating an online lobby, or joining a local-wireless room. Those labels can change with updates, so the safest procedure is to select the relevant multiplayer category in the current build and follow its prompts.
