A catalyst in a hydrogen fuel-cell car helps convert stored hydrogen and oxygen from air into electricity. In the common proton-exchange membrane (PEM) design, platinum helps the reaction proceed: electrons flow through an external circuit to power the car’s electric motor, while protons cross a membrane and combine with oxygen to form water. Catalyst materials matter because they affect fuel-cell cost, performance and durability—but improving them alone does not solve hydrogen production or access to vehicles and fueling stations.

What does a catalyst do in a hydrogen car?

A hydrogen fuel-cell electric vehicle (FCEV) is an electric-drive vehicle, not a car that burns hydrogen in its engine. It stores hydrogen onboard and uses a fuel cell to generate electricity for an electric motor. A catalyst is a material within the fuel-cell system that helps its electrochemical reactions proceed; it is not a fuel additive or an ordinary owner-installed upgrade. The U.S. Department of Energy describes PEM fuel cells as particularly suitable for vehicle applications. DOE: Types of Fuel Cells; DOE Alternative Fuels Data Center: Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles.

How does a PEM fuel-cell catalyst generate electricity?

A PEM fuel cell has an anode and cathode separated by an electrolyte membrane. Hydrogen reaches the anode, while oxygen from air reaches the cathode. With the help of the catalyst, hydrogen separates into protons and electrons. The membrane allows protons to pass through, but the electrons travel through an external circuit instead. That flow supplies electrical power to the vehicle’s motor. On the cathode side, the protons, electrons and oxygen participate in forming water.

  1. Hydrogen enters at the anode: The catalyst helps split hydrogen into protons and electrons.
  2. Electrons take the circuit: Their flow through the external circuit provides electrical power.
  3. Protons cross the membrane: They move through the electrolyte to the cathode.
  4. Oxygen reaches the cathode: There, oxygen participates with the protons and returning electrons in forming water.

The cell therefore produces electricity through an electrochemical reaction rather than by burning hydrogen in the car. DOE: Types of Fuel Cells.

  • The Hydrogen fuel trolley uses zinc particles and food grade citric acid to synthesize hydrogen, and then uses the produced hydrogen and air to generate electricity to drive the trolley.
  • During the experiment, please use 80℃ hot water for Combination reaction (if the water temperature is low, the amount of hydrogen and air pressure from the Combination reaction are insufficient, the fuel cell cannot be used for power generation), and then take off the plug of the vent pipe at the lower part of the fuel cell, release the gas in the rubber hose immediately, and then plug it back immediately, so that only pure hydrogen and air are in the fuel cell, so that the fuel cell can generate hydrogen air power.

Why is platinum used, and what makes it a challenge?

Platinum is a typical catalyst material in PEM fuel cells, but it is costly and can be poisoned by carbon monoxide, according to DOE. Reducing the amount of platinum can ease materials pressure, but loading is not the only measure of a useful catalyst: activity, vehicle power and long-term durability matter too. DOE’s technical-target material for PEM electrolysis explicitly cautions that catalyst-loading reductions should not compromise performance or durability. Those electrolyzer targets are not fuel-cell catalyst-loading figures for cars.

DOE’s fuel-cell overview reports that newer versions used one-fifth the platinum of earlier versions. It also reports high-volume automotive fuel-cell manufacturing-cost reductions of more than 35% since 2008 and more than 80% since 2002. These are historic DOE comparisons; the overview does not date them in the retrieved page text, so they should not be read as current, universal cost or platinum-use figures. Why does catalyst durability matter?

A fuel-cell catalyst must keep working under vehicle operating conditions, not just perform well initially. Platinum degradation remains a materials challenge: a DOE Office of Science article dated June 7, 2022, describes research into why platinum degrades unevenly in fuel cells. Understanding that degradation can inform efforts to make catalyst materials last longer, but the article does not establish that the durability challenge has been eliminated. When assessing a catalyst advance, the useful questions are whether it reduces platinum-group-metal use and cost, maintains catalytic activity and power output, withstands vehicle use, and resists contaminants such as carbon monoxide. A lower loading by itself does not show that a design is a better automotive fuel cell.

What do platinum-demand scenarios say about wider FCEV use?

The DOE Critical Materials Assessment (2023) presents scenario-dependent outlooks rather than guaranteed outcomes. By 2035, FCEVs account for 57% of platinum demand in one high-penetration trajectory and 43% in one low-penetration trajectory. These figures are shares within those particular scenarios, not certain predictions. The assessment also notes that FCEVs do not contain catalytic converters, making growth in FCEVs and demand for catalytic converters interrelated in its platinum-demand analysis. DOE: Critical Materials Assessment – 2023.

For scale, DOE’s PEM electrolyzer technical-target page lists total platinum-group-metal content of 3.0 mg/cm² for 2022 status, 0.5 mg/cm² for 2026 targets and 0.125 mg/cm² for ultimate targets. These values concern electrolyzers that produce hydrogen, not the catalyst loading of a hydrogen car’s fuel cell. The page date is not stated in the retrieved text; the target dates are part of the listed targets, not evidence that they have been achieved. What catalyst improvements do—and do not—mean for drivers

A catalyst advance could reduce a fuel cell’s material cost or improve its durability. It cannot, by itself, make a car affordable, widely available or low-emission across its full lifecycle. That depends on other factors, including how hydrogen is produced and delivered, as well as access to fueling infrastructure. The reviewed DOE pages do not provide a current location-specific station count, vehicle inventory or direct lifecycle-emissions comparison.

DOE’s Alternative Fuels Data Center describes FCEVs as limited but growing in certain markets. That is a qualified description, not a guarantee that a vehicle or hydrogen station is available everywhere.
