Monitor a hybrid IT estate by deciding where telemetry is collected and stored, which signals each system must provide, who can access them, and what remains available when a network link fails. A central platform can give teams a consistent view across on-premises systems, cloud services, virtual machines, and Kubernetes; it is not the only sound design. Where sensitive application data must stay local, keep that telemetry separate and centralize only lower-risk operational signals.
How do I monitor a hybrid IT environment?
Start with the systems and services you need to operate, not with a monitoring console. A dashboard can bring existing data together, but it cannot make missing telemetry appear or clarify who responds to an alert.
- Inventory the estate and its owners. Include hosts and operating systems, networks, storage, virtual machines, cloud services, Kubernetes control planes and nodes, cluster add-ons, and applications. Record which team owns each component and which user-facing services depend on it.
- Define what must be observable. For each service, identify the conditions responders need to detect and investigate: resource pressure, application errors, dependency failures, and changes over time. Assign an owner to each alert and decide what action it should prompt.
- Choose where each signal goes. Decide whether telemetry is centralized, kept locally, or split by sensitivity. Specify how it is protected in transit, who can query it, and how long it is retained.
- Check the collection path. Trace each signal from its source through any agent, collector, network link, and storage backend. Confirm that the destination can receive the format and level of detail you need.
- Test routine and degraded operations. Verify that a responder can investigate a normal incident and can still get useful local information when a remote service or network connection is unavailable.
Document the result as a coverage map: system, signal, collection method, destination, data owner, retention rule, and outage behavior. It makes gaps and unclear responsibilities easier to find than a dashboard alone.

| Centralized monitoring and logging | Teams need a shared view across locations, common retention, and centrally managed access and auditing. | Telemetry must reach the central repository. Secure it in transit, restrict access, set retention rules, filter sensitive fields, and account for ingestion and network-transfer costs. |
| Separate sensitive application telemetry from operations data | Compliance, customer-data, or data-location requirements mean sensitive application data should remain on premises, while lower-risk system signals can be centralized. | Classify data explicitly and operate more than one collection, storage, and query path. Keep local monitoring supportable without relying on the cloud connection. |
| Retain an existing third-party service | An organization already uses a monitoring or logging service and wants to preserve familiar workflows. | Validate integrations and signal coverage source by source. A connection to a service does not establish that every signal is collected or behaves equivalently. |
Google Cloud Architecture Center’s hybrid and multicloud guidance, last reviewed June 11, 2024, describes both centralized collection and a split design in which sensitive application telemetry stays local while lower-risk system telemetry can be exported. In that split pattern, on-premises monitoring can remain available without cloud dependencies when the connection is interrupted. These are architecture patterns, not a universal vendor recommendation.
Protect centralized data deliberately
A common repository can simplify shared views, retention, access control, and auditing, but it also concentrates telemetry. Decide who may see application and infrastructure data, protect transmission between collectors and storage, filter sensitive values from logs, and define retention and audit controls. Centralizing data does not remove the need to classify it.
Keep collection boundaries visible
For every source, establish whether collection is agent-based, endpoint-based, or supplied by a service integration, and confirm which fields and signals are included. Record what is not collected as well. This prevents a shared console from being mistaken for complete coverage.

What is the difference between Kubernetes resource metrics and full monitoring?
Kubernetes observability spans metrics, logs, and traces. Metrics show measured values over time; logs record events and messages; traces help follow work across application components. Together they provide a broader operational picture than resource measurements alone.
Kubernetes components expose Prometheus-format metrics at /metrics; the kubelet also exposes other endpoints. Application logs may come from application streams, while host and system logs come from their respective locations. Control-plane components and cluster add-ons also produce signals that can be aggregated and correlated with application telemetry.
| Capability | What it provides | What it does not provide by itself |
|---|---|---|
| Kubernetes Metrics API | Node and Pod CPU and memory resource usage. Tools such as kubectl top can display this data, and autoscalers can use it. |
It is intended for basic inspection and autoscaling, not as a complete monitoring pipeline. It does not by itself supply the full combination of metrics, logs, and traces needed to investigate service behavior. |
| Full metrics and observability pipeline | Can collect richer measurements, correlate signals, and, depending on its design, expose custom or external metrics for operational use and autoscaling. | It requires choices about collection, storage, queries, access, and operations; the implementation is not prescribed by Kubernetes. |
Kubernetes documentation explicitly distinguishes the Metrics API from a full monitoring pipeline. Its “Tools for Monitoring Resources” guidance, modified April 2, 2026, says tool selection depends on an organization’s needs, budget, and technical resources. Treat kubectl top as a resource-inspection tool, not evidence that the cluster’s applications, logs, traces, or dependencies are fully monitored.

Plan for cluster and application signals together
Collect the signals needed to answer both “Is the cluster under resource pressure?” and “Is the service working for its users?” Node and Pod utilization can help explain capacity issues; application logs and traces can help locate errors and cross-component delays. The exact collection and correlation setup depends on the environment and selected tools.

Assume a hybrid link can fail independently of the application. A remote dashboard may lose contact with a site even while local workloads continue, so decide in advance what local responders can still observe and which service dependencies will be affected.
- Provide resilient connectivity. AWS’s guidance for EKS hybrid nodes recommends redundant, resilient connections between hybrid nodes and the control plane. This is an AWS/EKS-specific recommendation, not a guarantee against every network failure.
- Alert on loss of node readiness. The EKS guidance describes alarms for
NodeNotReadyand monitoring gateway traffic metrics to help reveal connectivity problems. - Retain a local or secondary path. Keep local tools or a secondary monitoring and logging backend available for troubleshooting when regional services cannot be reached.
- Exercise the failure case. Check which telemetry is buffered, which alerts can still fire locally, and what a responder can query without the remote service. The available evidence does not establish a universal buffering behavior; confirm it for the chosen collectors and backends.
- Check application dependencies too. Monitoring cannot remove an application’s dependency on remote identity, APIs, storage, or ingress. Validate application and ingress behavior during a disconnection, not just whether telemetry continues to flow.
Document the degraded-mode procedure: which local system to use, how to reach it, what it can show, and who owns the response. A resilient monitoring design is one that remains useful under its expected failure conditions, not merely one that sends data successfully during normal operations.

How should access, retention, and cost shape the design?
Classify data before centralizing it
Decide which logs and metrics may contain customer information, credentials, or other sensitive values. Filter or redact sensitive fields where appropriate, restrict queries by role, and set audit controls for access to sensitive data. If a requirement keeps a class of data local, reflect that boundary in the collection and storage design rather than relying only on dashboard permissions.
Set retention by operational and policy need
Define retention for each telemetry class according to incident-response needs and applicable policy. Longer retention can improve historical investigation but increases storage and governance obligations. The right period is organization-specific; the cited architecture guidance does not establish a universal duration.
Count the full operating cost
Include service or license charges, telemetry ingestion, retention, network transfer, and the people-time required to operate collection and queries. Google Cloud’s guidance notes that imported Prometheus metrics and logs can be chargeable in its services and cautions that default collection may ingest all exposed metrics. Those are Google-service-specific cost considerations, not universal pricing rules; confirm current service configuration and rates before estimating spend.
How do I choose a monitoring architecture?
Use the constraints that are hardest to change as the decision order: data location and access requirements first, outage behavior next, then coverage, ownership, and operating cost. An architecture can combine patterns across different data classes or sites.
- Choose centralization when shared access, consistent retention, and centralized controls are priorities and telemetry can be transmitted and stored under the organization’s rules.
- Choose a split pipeline when sensitive application telemetry must remain local but lower-risk operational data can be shared centrally, and the team can support separate local and central workflows.
- Keep an existing service where useful when it covers the required sources and the organization can operate its integrations, access controls, and retention policies. Verify coverage rather than assuming compatibility means completeness.
- Use more than one destination when needed if different data classes, teams, or outage requirements call for separate paths. Make ownership and query locations explicit so responders know where to look.
Kubernetes documentation describes a varied monitoring ecosystem that includes open-source tools and paid services; it does not identify a universal best choice. The relevant question is whether the selected design covers the estate’s required signals, satisfies data constraints, remains diagnosable during disruption, and fits the organization’s resources.
