A hybrid hard disk, also called a solid-state hybrid drive (SSHD), combines a conventional hard disk drive (HDD) with a smaller amount of NAND flash memory. The hard disk provides most of the storage capacity; the flash acts as a cache for data the drive expects to be used often.
What is a hybrid hard drive?
An SSHD keeps the magnetic platters and mechanical read/write parts of an HDD, then integrates NAND flash memory into the same drive. Unlike an SSD, its flash is not generally a separate, full-capacity storage volume. The drive controller manages it as a cache. TechTarget’s definition and Toshiba’s storage guide describe this arrangement.
Some designs may also use a DRAM buffer. The precise components and specifications vary by model.

How does an SSHD work?
The drive monitors access patterns and can place frequently accessed data in NAND flash. If a later request is for data already cached there, access can be faster than retrieving it from the rotating disk. Data that remains on the magnetic disk still has HDD access behavior. The benefit therefore depends on the workload and what the controller has cached; an SSHD does not make every read or write equivalent to SSD performance.

Toshiba describes the drive directing data among DRAM, NAND, and disk based on learned system access patterns. That is a technical description of the behavior, not a universal speed benchmark for every SSHD or task.
HDD vs. SSHD vs. SSD
| Drive type | Primary storage | What distinguishes it |
|---|---|---|
| HDD | Rotating magnetic media | Stores and retrieves data using platters and mechanical read/write parts. |
| SSHD (hybrid hard drive) | Rotating magnetic media, with NAND flash cache | Combines HDD capacity with a controller-managed cache for frequently accessed data. |
| SSD | Flash memory | Uses flash as its primary storage rather than rotating platters. |
The key distinction is the role of the flash: in a hybrid drive it is a cache integrated into the drive, not a second, independent SSD volume.

What to check before choosing or replacing one
“Hybrid” does not guarantee a particular capacity, cache size, interface, or physical fit. Check the specific drive and the computer it must work with:
- Capacity: Confirm how much total storage the model provides.
- Interface: Match the drive’s connection to the host computer.
- Physical dimensions and form factor: Confirm the drive will fit the available bay.
- Compatibility: Check the computer’s supported drive type and interface, not just the drive’s name.
- Performance needs: Consider whether your usual work repeatedly accesses a relatively stable set of data. A cache can help with repeated access, but it does not remove HDD behavior for uncached data.
- Availability: Verify current regional availability; manufacturer documentation does not establish that a model remains on sale.
Seagate’s support page lists model ST1000LM028 as a 1 TB drive with a SATA 6 Gb/s interface and 5400 RPM spindle speed. These are specifications for that model, not a general SSHD standard or evidence of current retail availability. Seagate’s Laptop SSHD product manual describes two other models: ST1000LX003 (1 TB) and ST750LX006 (750 GB), each with 32 GB of NAND and a 5400 RPM spindle. Those figures apply only to the named models; the manual’s publication date is not stated.

- Boots and performs like an SSD
- 9.5mm drive for mobile devices
- 5x faster than traditional 7200-RPM HDD. Ideal for gaming and performance laptop
- Easy Playstation upgrade up to 500GB capacity without void warranty
- 64MB Cache with 8GB NAND Flash for more speed, cost efficient
Why the category may not suit every upgrade
Seagate’s May 21, 2024 comparison guide frames storage choices around form factor, capacity, speed, price, battery life, reliability, and durability. Its comparisons are manufacturer guidance, not independent test results. TechTarget’s June 10, 2024 assessment says SSHDs have become a less attractive alternative as flash prices decline, particularly for people whose main priority is speed. That is a dated market assessment, not a guarantee of prices or availability in every region.
