The difference comes down to two questions: can the electric motor move the car on its own, and can you charge its battery from an external power source? A mild hybrid cannot drive on electricity alone; a full hybrid can do so briefly but does not plug in; and a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) can be externally charged while retaining an engine. A range-extended hybrid is a plug-in arrangement in which the engine generates electricity for the motor that drives the wheels.
How the four hybrid labels differ
The labels do not describe four perfectly exclusive engineering categories. “Mild” and “full” indicate degrees of hybridization, “plug-in” describes how the battery can be charged, and “series” describes how power reaches the wheels. Some plug-in vehicles can use more than one power-flow arrangement, so the vehicle’s actual operation matters more than its label alone.
| Type | Can the motor propel the car alone? | Can it plug in? | How the battery is charged |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mild hybrid | No; the motor assists the engine. | No. | Through the vehicle’s hybrid system; it is not charged from an external outlet. |
| Full hybrid | Yes, for short distances or at low speeds. | No. | Regenerative braking and the engine. |
| Plug-in hybrid (PHEV) | Often, depending on the vehicle and operating mode. | Yes. | An external electrical source, the engine, and regenerative braking. |
| Range-extended or series plug-in hybrid | Yes; the electric motor drives the wheels. | Yes. | An external source and regenerative braking; the engine also generates electricity for the motor. |
What is a mild hybrid?
A mild hybrid pairs an engine with a battery and electric motor that assist it. The system can support functions such as turning the engine off while the vehicle is stopped, but it cannot propel the car using electricity alone. Mild hybrids do not plug in. The U.S. Department of Energy’s Alternative Fuels Data Center describes this distinction on its Hybrid Electric Vehicles page.

What is a full hybrid?
A full hybrid has a larger battery and more powerful motor than a mild hybrid, allowing it to move the car electrically for short distances or at low speeds. It still has an engine and does not need an external charging connection. Regenerative braking and the engine recharge its battery. As the Department of Energy puts it, “An HEV cannot plug in to off-board sources of electricity to charge the battery.”

What is a plug-in hybrid (PHEV)?
A PHEV combines a battery and electric motor with a gasoline tank and internal-combustion engine. It can use electricity and gasoline, and its battery can be charged from an external source as well as by the engine or regenerative braking. Some PHEVs run almost entirely on electricity until the battery charge is nearly depleted; others use electricity and gasoline together in a blended mode, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
Why charging habits matter
Regular charging is what lets a PHEV make fuller use of its electric capability. The Department of Energy says that a PHEV that is never plugged in will have fuel economy about the same as a similarly sized conventional hybrid. When a trip is shorter than the vehicle’s all-electric range and the battery is charged between trips, it may be possible to travel using only electric power. These outcomes depend on the vehicle and driving conditions; they are not a guarantee for every trip.

Charging options
Many plug-in vehicles can charge from a standard 120-volt outlet. A dedicated 240-volt outlet or charging system can charge more quickly, but charging time and capability vary by vehicle. Check the vehicle’s specifications before choosing equipment. A home charger is relevant only to a compatible plug-in vehicle; mild hybrids and ordinary full hybrids do not require home charging equipment. The EPA discusses charging in its electric and plug-in hybrid vehicle guidance.

In a series plug-in hybrid, the electric motor drives the wheels and the engine generates electricity for that motor. The Department of Energy notes that series plug-in hybrids are often called extended-range electric vehicles. This describes a power-flow arrangement, not a guarantee that every vehicle marketed as range-extended has an identical design.

Other PHEVs may use parallel or combined modes, in which the engine, the motor, or both can mechanically drive the wheels. For a specific model, consult its vehicle information to see how it operates. The Department of Energy explains these configurations on its Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicles page.

PHEV labels report two different fuel-economy measures: gasoline-only operation is shown in miles per gallon (MPG), while electric operation is shown in miles per gallon of gasoline-equivalent (MPGe). They describe different modes and should not be treated as one interchangeable figure. The EPA presents its estimates as general comparison guidance, not a promise of what a driver will achieve.

- The form of the 2018 version of the TS050 Hybrid is captured with superb accuracy: updated aerodynamics components (both exterior and interior), longer front fenders, and tweaked diffuser design.
- Interior features depictions of the driver seat, lithium-ion battery and more.
- Metal-plated part is used to recreate the silver section on the top of the cockpit.
- Also included are decals for the numerous sponsor logos on the number 7 and 8 cars, plus masking stickers for use in the paint job.
- Dedicated metal transfers recreate side mirror surfaces and headlight sections.
Electric range can fall below a label estimate. The EPA identifies cold weather, air-conditioning use, and high-speed driving as factors that can significantly reduce it. For a realistic comparison, look at the specific vehicle’s label and consider how your trips, climate, and charging access match the conditions in which you expect to drive. See the EPA’s PHEV label guidance.

Which type fits your driving and charging access?
- Consider a mild hybrid if you want engine assistance from a hybrid system but do not need electric-only driving or external charging.
- Consider a full hybrid if brief electric operation is useful but you do not have a way—or a desire—to plug in. Its battery recharges through the vehicle’s operation.
- Consider a PHEV if you can charge regularly and want the option of electric driving while retaining an engine for trips that need it. How often you plug in affects how much use you make of its electric capability.
- Check the power-flow design if you are considering a range-extended or series model. Confirm whether the engine generates electricity for the motor or can also drive the wheels mechanically.
