Humblewood adds ten playable species to D&D 5e: five birdfolk—Corvum, Gallus, Luma, Raptor and Strig—and five humblefolk—Cervan, Hedge, Jerbeen, Mapach and Vulpin. They change play through setting-specific traits, fixed ability-score increases, and a shared birdfolk Glide feature. Because Humblewood is third-party content, your Dungeon Master must approve it for the campaign.
The book uses the word races, while current D&D rules and explanatory articles generally use species. The terms refer to the same Humblewood character options here.
What is different about Humblewood species?
Humblewood is a third-party campaign setting published by Hit Point Press, not a species list from a core D&D setting. Its options are designed for a woodland world divided broadly between canopy-dwelling birdfolk and ground-dwelling humblefolk. That setting identity appears at the table through movement abilities, natural weapons, senses, spells, proficiencies and social features rather than through appearance alone.
The Humblewood options summarized for fifth edition use fixed ability-score increases. That is a meaningful difference from 2024 character creation, where a character’s background supplies ability-score increases. A Humblewood species therefore arrives with a more defined baseline in the older presentation, then adds distinctive traits that determine how it plays.

All five birdfolk share Glide. In practical terms, it slows a fall and permits short-distance flight; it is not the same as unrestricted, permanent flying. The five humblefolk do not share one equivalent group feature in the overview. Their abilities are distributed among burrowing, movement, recovery, tool use, magic, social assistance and other individual traits.
The summaries below describe each option’s role at the table, not a replacement for the licensed rule text. Check the exact wording in the Humblewood Campaign Setting book before resolving edge cases such as action timing, range, damage, or limits on a feature.

What are the five Humblewood birdfolk?
Birdfolk share the setting’s canopy culture and the Glide feature. Their species traits then separate stealth, senses, social play, magic, strength and aerial tactics.

Corvum are raven-like birdfolk with an Intelligence emphasis and talons. They suit characters who solve problems, investigate, or use knowledge as part of their identity. The dusk subspecies emphasizes Dexterity, while kindled emphasizes Charisma, creating different directions for a scout, trickster, face or spellcaster. Glide adds a safe way to manage drops and make short aerial repositioning part of the character’s visual language.
Gallus
Gallus resemble wildfowl and combine wing-assisted propulsion with social proficiencies. They fit characters who contribute through conversation, coordination and community ties rather than relying only on damage. Bright leans into social aptitude; huden leans toward nature and plant interaction. A Gallus can therefore support a diplomatic campaign, a wilderness story or both, depending on the subspecies and class.

Luma
Luma are dove-like birdfolk built around a cantrip and features that manipulate fate. This gives them a distinctly magical, supportive identity even before class choices are considered. Sable and sera offer different defensive or performance emphases, so the same basic species can be portrayed as guarded, resilient, theatrical or inspiring. Their Glide feature makes vertical terrain and controlled descents more relevant during exploration.
Raptor
Raptors are birds of prey with talons, keen senses and abilities that interact with cover. They are a natural fit for characters who watch lanes, exploit concealment or act before an enemy can respond. The maran subspecies leans toward readied actions and Intelligence, while mistral emphasizes aerial combat. The exact value of those choices depends on the encounter design and the rule text’s limits.
Strig
Strig are owl-like birdfolk with a Strength emphasis, talons and darkvision. They can support a physically forceful character who also expects to operate in darkness. Stout focuses on resilience and grappling; swift favors Dexterity and speed. Glide complements either approach by making ledges, drops and vertical approaches part of the tactical map without granting unlimited flight.
What are the five Humblewood humblefolk?
Humblefolk are the ground-dwelling counterpart to the birdfolk. Their identities are less about one shared movement rule and more about specialized tools, defenses, magic and support actions.
Cervan
Cervan are deer-like and emphasize Constitution. Their defining recovery feature matters after taking major damage, giving the character a reason to remain useful in a difficult fight. Grove favors Dexterity, while pronghorn favors Strength and antler attacks. Choose between them according to whether the character is intended to be nimble and exploratory or physically imposing.

Hedge
Hedge resemble hedgehogs and combine burrowing, quills and nature magic. Limited communication with bugs can create distinctive scouting and roleplaying opportunities, especially in a woodland campaign. Their package encourages creative use of terrain and natural environments rather than a single combat routine.

Jerbeen
Jerbeen are mouse-like and emphasize Dexterity and Charisma. They can leap, move through other creatures’ spaces, resist fear and use Help as a bonus action. That combination supports a mobile team player who can reach an ally, create an opening and keep moving. Their value is often measured in positioning and action economy rather than a large individual attack.
Mapach
Mapach are raccoon-like and use tinker’s tools to turn nearby materials into crude, temporary, inexpensive adventuring gear. The feature rewards players who inspect the environment and explain how an improvised item could solve a problem. It is especially useful in exploration-heavy games, although the DM still adjudicates what materials are available and what the resulting gear can reasonably do.
Vulpin
Vulpin are fox-like, with a bite attack, a defensive interaction that adds Intelligence to Dexterity saves, and charm-related magic. They suit characters who mix cleverness, social influence and opportunistic defense. Their traits can complement a spellcaster, scout or face, but the final build depends on class, background and the campaign’s ability-score rules.
Can you play as a bird in Humblewood?
Yes. Corvum, Gallus, Luma, Raptor and Strig are playable birdfolk. The shared Glide feature is the most visible mechanical difference from ordinary humanoid movement: it slows a fall and allows short-distance flight. That can change how a character approaches a gap, descends from a height, crosses a small vertical space or describes an escape.

Glide should not be treated as permission to hover indefinitely or travel like a character with unrestricted flight. Use the licensed book’s wording for distance, timing and other restrictions. A DM may also need to decide how it interacts with difficult terrain, grapples, forced movement and environmental hazards.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How do Humblewood options differ from regular 5e species at the table?
They make setting part of character creation
A core species can be dropped into many settings with little explanation. Humblewood species carry an immediate cultural and ecological context: canopy birdfolk, woodland communities and small ground-dwelling peoples. That gives the DM ready-made hooks for travel, politics and faction relationships, while giving players a stronger starting point for appearance and backstory.
They use a defined ability-score baseline in the original presentation
The summarized Humblewood rules use fixed ability-score increases. That can make a species feel more specialized than a modern species whose ability scores come from a background. It also means a player should confirm which edition’s character-creation procedure the campaign uses before selecting a class and background.
They trade a shared group feature for individual packages
Birdfolk all receive Glide, then diverge through species and subspecies traits. Humblefolk instead receive more individualized packages: recovery, burrowing, improvised gear, movement through spaces, social assistance, senses or magic. This produces different play patterns without establishing a reliable “best” species; the available evidence is a feature overview, not a quantitative balance study.

Some options emphasize movement and positioning, others perception, social support, spell-like effects, survival or creative equipment. A character’s class remains important, but the species choice can reinforce or complicate the class plan. A stealth character might value Dexterity, cover interaction or darkvision; a support character might prefer social proficiencies, fate manipulation or bonus-action Help.

Are Humblewood species compatible with the 2024 rules?
Hit Point Press lists a free player-character update PDF for “5e+ (2024).” That establishes that an update exists, but the available product description does not specify every conversion change. Do not assume that the older Humblewood text automatically converts itself or that every feature is unchanged.
- Ask the DM whether the campaign uses the 2014 fifth-edition rules, the 2024 rules, or a mixture.
- Use the 5e+ (2024) player-character update supplied by Hit Point Press when the table uses the 2024 rules.
- Check how ability-score increases, subspecies choices, spell wording and action timing are handled before finalizing the character sheet.
- Apply the DM’s ruling consistently if the update and another source leave an interaction unclear.
The safest approach is to treat the update as required reading for a 2024 campaign, not as proof that conversion is automatic.
How should you choose a Humblewood species?
- Start with the campaign’s allowed sources. Humblewood is third-party content, and the DM has final say over whether it is available.
- Choose the play pattern before the story detail. Decide whether you want mobility, stealth, support, resilience, improvisation, magic, social interaction or physical control.
- Match the species to the class under the table’s edition. Fixed ability-score increases in the older presentation may point toward a different class plan than 2024 character creation.
- Pick a subspecies only after identifying the character’s job. Corvum, Gallus, Luma, Raptor, Strig and Cervan each split into subspecies with different emphases; those choices should reinforce the intended role.
- Confirm edge cases before play. Ask about Glide, improvised Mapach gear, Jerbeen movement, fate features, charm magic and any action or reaction timing that could affect encounters.
What is included in the Humblewood Campaign Setting book?
Hit Point Press describes the campaign book as more than 200 pages. Its contents include a level 1–5 adventure, ten playable species, backgrounds, feats, spells, printable maps, standees and reference cards. The publisher lists a digital PDF, while a separate digital edition provides character-builder access and related digital tools.
Those product details explain why the book is more than a species supplement: it supplies a complete setting framework and an introductory adventure as well as player options. The current listings cited here establish digital availability, but they do not verify a current physical edition or inventory. Check the publisher or marketplace listing for the format available when you buy.
Quick Recap
What should the DM prepare before allowing Humblewood species?
- State whether third-party content is allowed and which Humblewood book or update is authoritative.
- Specify whether the campaign follows the 2014 rules, the 2024 rules or a house blend.
- Explain how fixed ability-score increases interact with the campaign’s character-creation method.
- Review Glide and any movement, falling or aerial-combat questions before the first session.
- Set expectations for Mapach improvised gear, Hedge bug communication and other abilities that depend on the environment.
- Keep the setting’s woodland premise visible in adventures so the species’ cultural and ecological traits matter beyond their character sheets.
