If a Humble Choice game is installed and launched through Steam on your Steam Deck but will not open, start with a system update and restart, check the game’s Steam Deck compatibility details, then try a recent Proton version for that title. These steps apply to Steam-installed games; the right diagnosis can differ if the game uses a separate launcher or was installed another way.
1. Update SteamOS and restart the Deck
Install any available SteamOS updates, then restart the device before changing per-game settings. Valve lists updating and restarting among its initial Steam Deck troubleshooting steps. If the problem remains, exit or disable third-party applications you installed through Desktop Mode and restart again. Valve’s Steam Deck troubleshooting guide provides the relevant system guidance.
2. Check the game’s Steam Deck compatibility details
Open the game’s Steam Store page and review its compatibility section. Valve uses four categories:
- Verified: The game meets Valve’s compatibility criteria for Deck.
- Playable: It may work, but could require manual configuration or adjustments.
- Unsupported: Valve has identified an issue that prevents the game from meeting its compatibility criteria.
- Unknown: Valve has not tested the title; this is not a verdict that it will either work or fail.
Check the notes for the exact title, since they can identify a requirement it does not meet. Valve says its review is ongoing as new games and updates arrive, so a compatibility status can change. Valve’s Steam Deck guide explains where to find compatibility information.

3. Try a recent Proton version for this game
SteamOS is Linux-based, and Proton is Valve’s compatibility layer for running Windows games on Linux. A Windows-only label does not by itself tell you whether a particular game will launch; compatibility depends on the title and its requirements. Valve recommends trying the latest Proton version when troubleshooting a Steam game.
- In Steam, open Library and select the game.
- Open the game’s menu and choose Properties.
- Select Compatibility.
- Enable Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool, then select a recent Proton version.
- Close Properties and try launching the game again.
This changes the compatibility tool for that game and can be reversed by returning to the same setting. If you installed only a Linux version, Steam may download the Windows version when you select Proton. Valve’s Steam Deck troubleshooting guide covers this setting.
4. Consider game-specific launchers, anti-cheat, or other dependencies
Some games depend on a launcher, anti-cheat system, DRM, or media framework that does not work smoothly with Proton. These are title-specific compatibility issues, rather than evidence that Humble Choice games as a group cannot run on Deck. Valve’s developer documentation notes that anti-cheat can require manual configuration for an individual game and that kernel-space anti-cheat is not currently supported. 5. If Steam stays on “Preparing to Launch,” check for corrupted files
Steam Support lists corrupted extracted game files as one possible cause of a game getting stuck at “Preparing to Launch.” For a Windows game running through Proton, Steam Support also recommends checking Steam Play discussions for title-specific suggestions. If those steps do not resolve the problem, contact Steam Support with the game name and what happens when you launch it. Steam Support’s guidance for this launch symptom covers the issue.

Give support or a game-specific community the exact game title, how it was installed and launched, the Proton version selected, and what you see when launch fails—for example, whether Steam remains on “Preparing to Launch” or shows a different error. These details help distinguish a Steam launch problem from a title-specific dependency or installation issue.
