Humanoid robots are useful today for some bounded industrial tasks, but the evidence does not show that they are reliable, general-purpose helpers. Their clearest fit is repetitive work in a controlled setting where a human-shaped robot can use existing workspaces and equipment. Whether one is useful depends on measured task performance, safety, uptime and total operating cost—not on how humanlike it looks.
What work can humanoid robots do today?
The strongest reported example is a factory pilot at BMW’s Plant Spartanburg. BMW says Figure 02 retrieved and positioned sheet-metal parts for welding during a ten-month pilot. The company reports that the work supported production covering more than 30,000 BMW X3 vehicles, moved over 90,000 components and involved about 1,250 operating hours. These are BMW-reported results, not an independent audit or evidence that the robot could handle unrelated work without reconfiguration.
The setting matters: BMW describes a highly automated body shop, standard interfaces to its robotics ecosystem and a workforce experienced in introducing new technology. The pilot demonstrates that a humanoid can perform a defined role in an existing production environment; it does not establish that the same system will work as well in a less structured facility or across a full shift of unpredictable tasks. BMW’s account of the Spartanburg pilot and Leipzig project gives the task and operating context.
Other industrial deployments are also reported, but their figures need the same care. Agility Robotics says its Digit robots have accumulated more than 65,000 operational hours across customer sites and reports approximately 98% on-task accuracy at a 100,000-tote milestone at GXO’s Flowery Branch site. Those are manufacturer-reported figures; the announcement does not provide an independent audit or a full accuracy denominator and set of operating conditions. They should not be treated as a direct comparison with BMW’s pilot. Agility’s announcement describes its claims.

Which factory projects are still being evaluated?
BMW’s Leipzig work with Hexagon Robotics’ AEON is an evaluation pathway, not evidence of a mature autonomous production deployment. BMW says AEON began operational work at the plant in December 2025 after theoretical evaluation and lab testing. Its September 2026 account says further testing was planned to prepare for pilot operations in summer 2026, with high-voltage battery assembly and component production among the initial areas being evaluated. Teams were also examining workstation adaptations and employee input. The account does not establish that those planned pilot operations have since started or delivered production results. BMW’s September 2026 update sets out that status.
Why does the humanoid shape help—and what does it cost?
A human-shaped robot may be able to move through spaces, reach workstations and interact with equipment designed for people. That can make it worth evaluating where changing the layout or installing task-specific automation would be difficult. But humanlike form does not itself make a robot versatile: walking, balancing and manipulating objects safely all add engineering demands. If a task can be handled by a fixed machine or a purpose-built mobile robot, the humanoid may add complexity without improving output.

The UK Government Office for Science’s 2025 assessment gives an estimated cost of $40,000–$150,000 for a humanoid robot. That estimate is not a universal purchase price or a total cost of ownership. A buyer also has to account for integration, energy, maintenance, utilization, reliability and the value of work completed. Gartner says humanoids cost multiple times more than task-specific polyfunctional robots while delivering lower throughput and uptime in the comparisons it describes; this is Gartner’s assessment, not a result that applies to every robot or workflow. Neither source establishes one cost-effective choice for all facilities. The UK Government assessment and Gartner’s January 2026 assessment provide those qualifications.

What do independent tests say about readiness?
Fraunhofer IPA tested a Unitree G1 EDU-4 delivered in May 2025 with firmware 1.04. In that configuration, the robot operated for at most 2 hours 49 minutes while stationary, and 1 hour 49 minutes in a typical standing-and-walking scenario, on a single charge. Fraunhofer also reported collision forces above 500 newtons. These measurements apply to the tested model and setup, not to every humanoid robot.

The same benchmark found a critical Bluetooth security vulnerability in the tested software version that allowed remote control. Fraunhofer says the issue has since been resolved, so the result should not be presented as a known current vulnerability. The institute says humanoid-specific safety standards are not expected until 2028; that is its expectation, not a guarantee of when a standard will be published. Fraunhofer IPA’s benchmark report describes the test configuration, measurements and security finding.
These results illustrate why a demonstration is not enough to judge readiness. Fraunhofer’s application-relevant criteria include complex capabilities, cleanroom suitability, functional safety, cybersecurity and energy efficiency. Its tests cover areas such as navigation, movement and force precision, collision-force limitation, obstacle detection, failure behavior, battery life and power use. A robot that can complete a short, rehearsed task may still fall short on safe recovery, sustained operation or integration into a real workflow.

How should a business judge whether a task fits?
Fraunhofer’s Humanoid Capabilities Navigator evaluates mobility, manipulation, cognition and safety/security on a scale from 0 (not present) to 4 (highly autonomous, comparable to humans or better). Its assessment found the G1 had advanced in mobility but still had substantial development needs for industrial requirements. The framework’s key lesson is that capability is task-specific: truck loading places high demands on manipulation, cognition and safety, while structured machine operation requires less flexibility. Fraunhofer’s navigator explains the categories and scale.
Before a pilot, compare the robot with a purpose-built alternative and define success in the terms that matter to the operation:

- Ideal Birthday Xmas Gift & Kids Intimate Companion : The infrared control Robot is versatile and vivid can dance, sing, walk, patrol, even can speak. Each robot measures 5.9 x 3.3 x 10.6 inch.
- Task structure: Is the workflow repetitive and predictable, or does it involve variable objects, mixed orders and frequent exceptions?
- Manipulation: Can the robot grasp, position and handle the required objects at the needed speed and precision?
- Mobility: Does its ability to navigate a human-designed space save enough facility changes to justify the added complexity?
- Output and uptime: Measure completed work, cycle time, stoppages and recovery time under normal operating conditions; do not substitute a demonstration or an “on-task accuracy” figure without its denominator and conditions.
- Safety and failures: Test behavior around workers, obstacles and unexpected events, including how the system stops and resumes safely.
- Runtime and integration: Include charging, energy use, maintenance, connections to existing equipment and the work required to adapt the process.
- Total cost: Compare the cost per unit of useful output with task-specific automation or process redesign over the same operating period.
Gartner identifies limited dexterity, intelligence and adaptability in mixed-SKU picking, trailer unloading and exception handling, alongside integration challenges, high upfront and maintenance costs, and battery limitations. It also says task-specific polyfunctional robots may offer higher uptime and lower energy use for some warehouse tasks. Those are Gartner’s stated constraints and comparisons, not a blanket verdict on every application. Its January 2026 forecast expects most deployments through 2028 to remain in tightly controlled environments, with fewer than 20 companies reaching live production for manufacturing and supply-chain humanoid use cases by then. Gartner also forecasts fewer than 100 companies advancing proofs of concept beyond experimentation. These are predictions, not observed deployment counts.
Do estimates about robots apply to humanoids?
Not automatically. Anthropic’s September 2026 analysis estimates that robots could perform 74% of physical tasks in the United States, covering 34% of working hours, but estimates that robots are cost-competitive with people for just 0.3% of work. Those estimates concern robots broadly, not humanoids alone, and are not humanoid adoption statistics. The analysis points to structured environments, dexterity, human preferences and regulation as factors affecting adoption. Anthropic’s analysis provides its scope.
