Morgan Stanley Research estimated in May 2025 that the humanoid-robot market could exceed $5 trillion by 2050. That is a long-range analyst projection—not today’s sales, a 2030 forecast, or a promise of returns for any stock. The estimate includes supply chains and repair, maintenance and support as well as robots themselves.

Tesla offers the most direct exposure of these three examples because it is developing a humanoid robot. NVIDIA supplies robotics computing and development tools, while ABB has an industrial-robotics ecosystem connection. Those roles establish a link to the theme, not proven humanoid revenue or evidence that any stock is positioned to outperform.

What does the $5 trillion humanoid-robot forecast count?

Morgan Stanley Research’s May 14, 2025 estimate is for a potential market exceeding $5 trillion by 2050. Its scope includes the supply chain and services such as repair, maintenance and support, so it should not be read as a forecast of robot-manufacturer sales alone. It is a projection, not a measured market.

The same Morgan Stanley outlook projected nearly 1 billion humanoids in use by 2050, with about 90% serving industrial and commercial purposes. It projected adoption to accelerate mainly in the late 2030s and 2040s. Its regional projections were 302.3 million units in China and 77.7 million in the United States by 2050.

Goldman Sachs Research’s February 26, 2024 summary of research dated January 8, 2024 gave a different set of estimates: at least $6 billion in 10–15 years, and up to $154 billion by 2035 in a “blue-sky” scenario. Goldman Sachs made the larger scenario conditional on overcoming hurdles involving design, use cases, technology, affordability and public acceptance. These figures have different dates, horizons and assumptions; they are not directly comparable consensus forecasts.

Estimate What it refers to How to interpret it
More than $5 trillion by 2050 Morgan Stanley Research, May 2025; humanoid market, including related supply chains and repair, maintenance and support Long-term analyst projection, not current robot sales
At least $6 billion in 10–15 years Goldman Sachs Research, February 2024 summary of January 2024 research A separate estimate with a different time horizon
Up to $154 billion by 2035 Goldman Sachs Research’s conditional blue-sky scenario Upside scenario dependent on clearing several adoption hurdles, not its base case

Morgan Stanley’s May 2025 analysis also estimated that a humanoid could cost about $200,000 in 2024, with projected costs of $150,000 by 2028 and $50,000 by 2050 in high-income countries; it projected a possible $15,000 price by 2050 in lower-income countries. These are estimates and projections, not quoted retail prices. The falling-cost path matters because broad deployment—especially in homes—depends on whether robots can become affordable as well as capable.

Which public companies have identifiable exposure?

The examples below represent different points in the value chain. Company announcements and filings establish plans or technology connections; they do not establish that humanoids are a material source of revenue.

Company Type of exposure Evidence in the cited material What it does not establish
Tesla Direct humanoid developer Tesla’s 2025 SEC-filed proxy material describes Optimus as under development and sets out a long-term vision for commercial and home use. Mass production, sales, a launch timetable, or a material earnings contribution.
NVIDIA Compute, software and development platform In March 2025, NVIDIA announced the Isaac GR00T N1 robotics foundation model and supporting simulation and synthetic-data tools. In June 2026, it announced a research reference robot using a Unitree H2 chassis, Sharpa hands, Jetson Thor compute and NVIDIA software. NVIDIA said Unitree would make the reference robot available in late 2026 and that the workflow would support Unitree G1. Widespread deployment, consumer availability, or a quantified humanoid-related revenue stream.
ABB Industrial robotics ecosystem NVIDIA’s March 2026 announcement named ABB Robotics among industrial and robotics organizations building on NVIDIA physical-AI technology. That ABB is developing a humanoid product, or the scale and financial materiality of this connection.

Tesla: the direct-development case

Tesla’s proxy statement is company material intended to present its position to shareholders. It is evidence of the company’s stated Optimus plans and long-term ambition, not independent verification of commercial readiness. The investment case tied to humanoids therefore depends on execution: whether Tesla can develop a useful robot, manufacture it at scale and sell it profitably.

NVIDIA: the enabling-platform case

NVIDIA’s announcements point to a role in the tools used to develop and test robots: foundation models, simulation, synthetic data, software and onboard computing. Its June 2026 reference-robot announcement is research-oriented and combines NVIDIA technology with hardware from named partners. This makes NVIDIA an identifiable enabler, but a platform’s presence in a development workflow does not show how much revenue humanoids generate for it.

ABB: the industrial-ecosystem case

ABB is relevant here as an established industrial-robotics company named in NVIDIA’s physical-AI ecosystem announcement, not as a confirmed humanoid manufacturer. That distinction matters: experience in industrial automation may create a connection to the broader robotics market, but the cited announcement does not show ABB’s humanoid plans or quantify any resulting business.

Why can the market grow without a near-term household boom?

The forecasts point first to industrial and commercial use, not a quick move into kitchens and living rooms. Morgan Stanley Research projected that about 90% of humanoids in use in 2050 would be used in industrial and commercial settings. Its analyst Adam Jonas wrote, “Adoption should be relatively slow until the mid-2030s, accelerating in the late 2030s and 2040s,” underscoring that the $5 trillion figure rests on a long adoption curve.

A separate Morgan Stanley Research analysis from 2024 projected 8 million humanoids working in the United States by 2040 and 63 million by 2050. It associated those scenarios with estimated wage impacts of $357 billion by 2040 and roughly $3 trillion by 2050. These are projections of potential labor-market effects, not observed job displacement or a direct measure of robot-company revenue.

For an investor, the key distinction is between the size of a possible future market and the portion any company can capture. The opportunity extends beyond finished robots. Morgan Stanley’s 2024 discussion identified AI and semiconductors, sensors, batteries, actuators, bearings, reducers and integrators as parts of the value chain. Software, simulation and onboard compute can also support development, as NVIDIA’s announcements illustrate. Morgan Stanley’s 2026 estimate of more than $25 trillion in annual product revenue referred to the broader AI robotics market, not humanoids alone, and should not be substituted for the humanoid-market forecast.

What should investors check before treating these as potential winners?

  • Revenue visibility: The cited material does not quantify humanoid sales or earnings contributions for Tesla, NVIDIA or ABB. A development program, platform announcement or ecosystem relationship is not a revenue figure.
  • Evidence strength: Tesla’s proxy describes a company ambition; NVIDIA’s announcements describe tools and a research reference robot; ABB’s connection comes from being named in an ecosystem announcement. These are different kinds of evidence, not a ranking.
  • Execution: Robots must work reliably in real environments, perform useful tasks safely and be manufactured at sufficient scale and cost. Morgan Stanley’s analysis identifies continued technical work in both hardware and AI.
  • Affordability and adoption: The projected cost declines are important assumptions, particularly for home use. Industrial buyers also need a practical case for deploying robots in their operations.
  • Acceptance and regulation: Safety rules, regulatory constraints and social acceptance can affect where and how quickly humanoids are deployed. Goldman Sachs likewise treated public acceptance and other hurdles as conditions for its blue-sky scenario.
  • Stock valuation: A large potential market does not establish that a company’s shares are attractively priced. The cited sources do not provide current valuation comparisons or a financial screening of these stocks, so they cannot support a conclusion about which is the best investment.
