Amplitude Studios’ first extended HUMANKIND 2 gameplay overview, published October 15, 2026, follows one civilization from its first settlement into the opening era transitions. It shows a historical strategy game where a starting myth, geography, cultural customs and changing climate jointly determine how an empire develops.
The footage confirms a planned 2027 Windows PC release, but not an exact launch date. It also shows that changing culture is a guided historical process rather than a free choice at every era boundary.
A campaign begins with a place and a founding story
Historical Mode opens on an Earth map with roughly 20 possible starting locations. Each location is tied to a First Tale: a founding myth that identifies the emerging empire, changes the opening situation and provides access to at least one culture.

The overview follows the Flood Tamer First Tale in the Nile desert, associated with the Ancient Egyptians. The example demonstrates that the first strategic decision is more than selecting a faction from a menu. The location and founding story establish the historical context for the opening settlement and shape which cultural paths are immediately available.

Culture changes are earned through progression
HUMANKIND 2 includes 70 cultures, according to Amplitude Studios’ 2026 description. A culture is not replaced instantly when an era changes. Instead, each culture has a Customs progression tree that can grant bonuses, units or districts before culminating in a choice of Legacy Trait.
Customs, units and districts
Customs make cultural development a series of decisions rather than a single era-selection screen. Advancing through a tree can provide practical military, economic or settlement benefits, while the final Legacy Trait gives the culture a lasting identity for the campaign.

Historical Mode limits the next culture
At an era boundary, Historical Mode does not let the player select any culture in the game. A candidate must satisfy at least one historical or geographic connection:
- It shares Common History with the current culture.
- It historically shared land with territory the player controls.
- It has close Foreign Contact with the player’s civilization.
Neighboring peoples can also contribute individual Customs without replacing the empire’s entire culture. That creates a middle path between total continuity and a complete identity change.

A culture can continue into another era
The Ancient Egyptians in the demonstration span two eras. The player can therefore keep them rather than switch immediately, while later transitions still present culturally linked alternatives through Common History. Continuity is an available strategy, not a requirement.
Biomes and climate change reshape the map
The game models eight biomes, and settling in one unlocks Adaptations that improve survival and movement in environments such as deserts or polar regions.

Adaptations turn local knowledge into strategy
In the footage, knowledge of dog sleds learned from the Thule people becomes an adaptation. The example illustrates how contact with another population can produce a useful capability without forcing the player to abandon the current culture.
Climate affects resources and long-term planning
Climate shifts can change which resources remain available. The official Steam description frames this as an economic and urban-planning problem: players must adapt cities and economies to moving biomes while balancing near-term growth against consequences that may persist for generations.

What the historical focus means
Amplitude says that the game’s people, places and events are grounded in historical research and that it collaborated with more than 30 historians. The studio identifies game director Benoit as a historian. Those are developer-authored authenticity claims, not an independent assessment of historical accuracy, but they explain the design goal behind linking culture choices to real historical and geographic relationships.
Release date, platform and early access
The official Steam listing names AMPLITUDE Studios as both developer and publisher and gives 2027 as the planned release year for Windows PC. It lists both single-player and multiplayer features. No exact launch day has been announced in the cited official material.

The Insiders opportunity is a feedback program, not a promise of universal early access. Applying before the stated October 20 cutoff only puts an applicant in consideration for the first wave.

The overview provides the clearest early look yet at how the sequel intends to connect culture, geography and climate. It is not a final review or hands-on test. The footage does not establish performance, balance, multiplayer quality or complete feature coverage, and the planned 2027 release leaves time for systems to change.
For players comparing the sequel with the first HUMANKIND, the most important questions are whether constrained culture transitions create more meaningful continuity, how often climate changes force resource replanning, and how much depth Customs, Adaptations and Legacy Traits add over a full campaign. The current video demonstrates the direction of those systems, but not their final balance or campaign-wide impact.
