The best way to approach Humankind 2 is to plan a connected sequence of choices rather than chase a supposedly perfect culture. Your game begins with a Neolithic settlement, develops through the Ancient Era, and then asks you to balance Customs, Legacy Traits, historical eligibility, biome Adaptations, contacts, climate pressure, and limited resources. Choose a starting location for its First Tale and future options, select cultures for the problems they solve, and expand only when your economy can support the environment you are entering.
What is confirmed about Humankind 2
Humankind 2 is an upcoming strategy game from Amplitude Studios. The official hub lists a PC release in 2027, but no exact launch date or price has been published. The final culture roster, complete era count, multiplayer details, platform list beyond the announced PC release, and balance values are also not established. The guidance below therefore focuses on systems Amplitude has described, not on a final competitive tier list.
The game is still in pre-release development. Amplitude is recruiting players for pre-release testing through its Insiders program, so menus, numbers, culture balance, and even some rules may change before launch. Treat the principles here as a planning framework that should survive balance changes, not as a promise that a particular culture or opening will always be strongest.

Understand the opening: from Neolithic settlement to the Ancient Era
Your first identity is not a permanent civilization choice made on a single screen. The opening runs from a Neolithic settlement into the Ancient Era. During that transition, you establish where your people begin, interpret a First Tale, make initial contacts, and decide which culture and Customs direction fit the position you actually received.

That sequence matters because early information has strategic value. Terrain, nearby peoples, accessible resources, and the culture options created by your location can all change what a sensible Ancient-Era plan looks like. A culture that seems attractive in isolation may be awkward if the map gives you no practical way to use its strengths.
A useful opening question
Instead of asking, “Which culture is best?” ask, “What problem will my first culture solve?” Your answer might be safe settlement, faster movement, early production, defense of a narrow border, or access to a planned expansion region. You can then evaluate Customs and later eligibility against that purpose.
Choose a starting location by reading its First Tale
Historical Mode has roughly 20 starting locations on the Earth map. Each location is tied to a First Tale: a founding myth with opening effects and access to at least one culture. This makes the start more than a coordinate on a map. It is an opening constraint and an opportunity that can shape the first era.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat to compare before committing
- Opening effects: Identify what the First Tale changes immediately. An effect that improves your intended economy or compensates for a difficult start can matter more than a superficially rich-looking position.
- Terrain and nearby biomes: Note where your first settlement can grow and which environments you may need to enter next. A start surrounded by attractive but demanding terrain may require an Adaptation plan before expansion.
- Culture access: The First Tale gives access to at least one culture. Check whether that culture’s Customs support the opening you want, or whether it is merely a bridge to a later option.
- Foreign contact: Consider how easily scouts can meet other peoples. Contact can unlock cultures and individual Customs, so a position with useful neighbors may outperform an isolated one.
- Future borders: Look beyond the first settlement. Shared land, border contact, and diplomatic proximity can affect which cultures become eligible in Historical Mode.
How to decide between two promising starts
- Read both First Tales and write down their opening effects.
- Mark the terrain and biomes you can reach without an expensive detour.
- List the culture access each start creates and the first problem each culture appears able to solve.
- Estimate how quickly you can meet other peoples and whether those contacts could fill a Customs or mobility gap.
- Choose the start whose early effects, culture access, and expansion route reinforce one another. Do not select solely because its map position looks central or its first resource appears attractive.
Plan cultures through Customs, not names
Humankind 2 has 70 cultures. Each culture has a Customs tree that unlocks bonuses, units, or districts and ends in a Legacy Trait. The culture name is therefore only a label for a package of tools. Your real choice is which Customs branches you can afford to develop and whether their final Legacy Trait remains useful after your next transition.
Read the tree in three layers
- Immediate Customs: Look for benefits that help you survive the current map: economy, defense, mobility, production, or settlement capacity.
- Enabling Customs: Identify bonuses, units, and districts that make a later plan possible. A mobility tool may be valuable because it reaches a new biome; a district may matter because it supports a dense settlement pattern.
- Legacy Trait: Treat the endpoint as a long-term modifier, not a reason to ignore weak early turns. A powerful late trait cannot repair an opening that loses access to territory, contacts, or resources.
Keep a plan for the next era
When you inspect a Customs tree, ask which branches will still be relevant if you change culture. Your current bonuses and units may remain part of your operational identity even when the next culture supplies a different toolkit. Prioritize Customs that improve the economy or geography you expect to keep, rather than benefits that work only in a region you intend to abandon.
Use a simple culture scorecard
| Question | What a strong answer looks like | Warning sign |
|---|---|---|
| Does it solve the immediate problem? | The first Customs help with your current terrain, economy, defense, or movement. | The payoff assumes a map or resource you do not have. |
| Can its branches support the next era? | Several upgrades remain useful after a transition or territorial shift. | Most value disappears when your opening situation changes. |
| Is the Legacy Trait compatible with your route? | It reinforces the settlement, diplomatic, military, or expansion pattern you are building. | It rewards a strategy you are not able to execute. |
| Can you reach it legally in Historical Mode? | Common History, shared land, or close Foreign Contact provides a realistic route. | You are relying on a culture that the map and diplomacy cannot expose. |
How Historical Mode limits culture selection
In Historical Mode, a new culture is not automatically available every era. The published rules describe three routes to eligibility: a candidate can share Common History with your current culture, have historically shared land with land you control, or become reachable through close Foreign Contact. Land- or border-based adoption may require more investment, so holding territory is not the same as receiving an effortless choice.

Common History
Common History is the most direct continuity route. When your current culture and a candidate are connected by the game’s historical framework, the candidate may become available without requiring the same geographic setup as a distant option. Check this route before you abandon a culture that is already working; a historically connected successor can preserve momentum while opening a new Customs tree.
Shared land and borders
Territory can create eligibility, but the rule has a cost. If adoption through land or borders requires additional investment, expanding toward a candidate culture is a strategic project rather than a free unlock. Plan the settlement, infrastructure, defense, and resource burden before you commit to that direction.
Close Foreign Contact
Meeting another people can expose a culture that your current territory cannot. This makes scouting and diplomacy part of progression. A contact is especially valuable when it provides the next terrain, mobility, or production tool you need rather than simply adding another name to a list.
Should you keep the same culture across eras?
Yes, sometimes. Some cultures span multiple eras, and the published example allows the Ancient Egyptians to continue into the Classical Era. Continuity is a deliberate strategic choice when your existing Customs and Legacy Trait fit the map better than an available alternative.
Continue when continuity is doing useful work
- Your current Customs already support the economy, defense, or settlement pattern you are using.
- The Legacy Trait becomes more valuable as your territory grows.
- A new culture would require an expensive land, border, or diplomatic route for only a small improvement.
- Your next expansion region does not demand a different Adaptation or mobility tool.
- You need a stable economy before taking a riskier geographic or military step.
Switch when a concrete problem justifies it
- A connected culture provides a Customs branch that directly fixes a production, defense, movement, or settlement bottleneck.
- A newly available culture offers a Legacy Trait that matches the next several turns, not just a single attractive bonus.
- Your current culture cannot support the biome or climate conditions required for the expansion route you have chosen.
- Foreign Contact reveals a toolkit that avoids a costly territorial detour.
Do not switch merely because a new era has started. Change when the new culture’s complete package is worth giving up the momentum, eligibility, and developed Customs associated with your current one.

Expansion in Humankind 2 is environmental. The official overview identifies eight biome types, and settling in those biomes unlocks biome-specific Adaptations. Climate shifts can also make limited resources harder to manage. A new region therefore changes both what your people can do and what your economy must protect.

Use a three-part expansion check
- Adaptation: Determine which biome you are entering and what Adaptation the settlement unlocks or requires. If the new region is central to your plan, make that benefit part of the timing decision.
- Resource exposure: Identify resources that may become scarce as climate conditions change. Do not treat a one-time abundance as a permanent income stream.
- Support cost: Account for the Customs, units, districts, movement, and defenses needed to connect and hold the new area. A settlement that cannot be supplied or defended is not successful expansion.
Expand in layers
First secure a base that can produce and defend the next settlement. Then establish the new position, unlock or work toward its biome Adaptation, and only afterward push farther. This layered approach reduces the risk of opening several fronts while your resource income is still dependent on a fragile climate or a single local supply.
When a poor-looking region is strategically correct
A region with fewer immediately visible resources may still be the right target if its biome Adaptation unlocks a capability your empire lacks, if it creates a route to a historically eligible culture, or if it places you near useful Foreign Contact. Evaluate the environmental and diplomatic return, not only the first-turn yield.
Use contacts as progression infrastructure
Contacts do more than reveal the map. Meeting other peoples can unlock relevant cultures and provide individual Customs. The official example of learning dog-sled use from the Thule people illustrates the principle: contact can supply a specific environmental or mobility solution without forcing you to replace your entire culture.
Scout with a question
Before sending a scout into unexplored territory, define what you are looking for. It could be a people whose Customs improve movement, a culture connected to your intended era transition, a route into a biome, or a diplomatic neighbor that makes a border-based option practical. Purposeful scouting is more valuable than collecting discoveries with no plan for using them.
Contact versus culture change
If a contact gives you the one tool your economy or expansion needs, keep your established culture and take the targeted Customs benefit when possible. If the contact also unlocks a complete culture whose Customs and Legacy Trait solve several linked problems, compare the full transition cost before changing identity. A single borrowed capability can be more efficient than rebuilding your entire progression.
A practical beginner plan for the first eras
Phase 1: Interpret the opening
- Read the First Tale for your chosen Historical Mode location.
- Record its opening effects, guaranteed culture access, nearby terrain, and likely contact routes.
- Choose an initial objective: secure a productive core, reach a particular biome, establish defensive depth, or find a useful people.
Phase 2: Establish a culture thesis
- Inspect the available Customs tree rather than selecting from the culture name alone.
- Mark the early bonus, unit, or district that supports your objective.
- Identify the Legacy Trait and decide whether it remains useful after your intended expansion.
- Write down at least one plausible successor culture and the Historical Mode route that could unlock it.
Phase 3: Scout for eligibility and adaptation
- Explore enough to identify neighboring peoples, borders, and the next biome you may need.
- Use Foreign Contact to seek a specific Customs or culture option.
- Check whether shared land, Common History, or close contact creates a realistic transition path.
- Delay a risky settlement if the required Adaptation or resource support is not ready.
Phase 4: Make the era decision
- Compare staying with the current culture against each eligible alternative.
- Value the developed Customs and Legacy Trait you would keep or lose.
- Price the territorial, diplomatic, and environmental investment required for the new option.
- Switch only when the alternative solves a concrete problem better than continuity does.
Common beginner mistakes and how to correct them
Choosing by reputation instead of position
Symptom: You select a culture because its name sounds powerful, then discover that its Customs do not match your terrain or economy.

How to evaluate a culture when no universal best choice exists
Current official material establishes the decision factors but does not provide enough balance data to rank one culture as universally best. A sensible comparison uses seven axes:
| Axis | Question to ask |
|---|---|
| Customs payoff and timing | How soon do the bonuses, units, or districts help, and do they support the current bottleneck? |
| Legacy Trait value | Will the endpoint remain relevant as the empire grows or changes direction? |
| Continuity versus a new toolkit | Is preserving the developed culture more valuable than gaining a different Customs tree? |
| Geographic eligibility | Can Common History, shared land, or controlled borders provide a practical route? |
| Diplomatic eligibility | Can close Foreign Contact unlock the option without an excessive detour? |
| Biome Adaptation | Does the choice help you enter or exploit the environment your expansion plan requires? |
| Resource and tempo resilience | Can the culture support your economy and expansion if climate shifts or military pressure slow you down? |
Use the table as a decision record rather than a permanent ranking. The right answer can change with the First Tale, map position, neighboring peoples, and the climate conditions you face.

The announced 2027 PC window does not establish an exact launch date or price. Official material reviewed for this guide also does not establish the final roster of all 70 cultures, the complete number of eras, multiplayer details, final balance, or a complete platform list. Those details should be checked against later official announcements and hands-on builds when they become available.
For now, avoid planning around exact yields, tier lists, or a guaranteed opening sequence. The durable lessons are to read the First Tale, build around Customs, treat Historical Mode eligibility as a progression system, use contacts deliberately, account for biome Adaptations and climate pressure, and compare continuity with change on the actual problem facing your empire.
