In psychology, memory is described in more than one way: by how long information is retained, by what is remembered, and by whether it can be consciously recalled. The familiar stages are sensory, short-term, and long-term memory. Long-term memory includes explicit memories—events and facts—and implicit learning, such as skills. These are human-memory concepts, not a taxonomy of computer memory.
What “types of memory” means
Memory can be classified along several dimensions rather than as one flat list. OpenTextBC distinguishes types, stages, and processes: stages describe how information is available over time; types describe forms of remembering; and encoding, storage, and retrieval describe processes involved in memory. A memory can therefore fit more than one description.
For example, remembering a particular trip is episodic and explicit long-term memory. The stage labels and the conscious-access labels answer different questions, so they should not be treated as competing categories.
What are the three familiar stages of memory?
Introductory psychology commonly describes memory using sensory, short-term, and long-term stages. This is a useful teaching model, not a claim that the mind contains three separate, independent containers.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Sensory memory
Sensory memory briefly retains information arriving through the senses. Cleveland Clinic describes visual (iconic), auditory (echoic), touch (haptic), taste (gustatory), and smell (olfactory) forms. How long sensory information remains available varies by sense and circumstances, so a single duration should not be applied to every form.
Short-term memory
Short-term memory temporarily holds a limited amount of information. OpenStax gives 15–30 seconds as a typical introductory-textbook estimate, not a fixed biological limit or a duration that applies in every situation. It is the kind of retention involved in keeping a number in mind briefly before using or forgetting it.

Long-term memory
Long-term memory refers to knowledge and experiences that remain available beyond immediate short-term retention. It includes consciously reportable memories as well as learning that can influence behavior without deliberate recollection.

A common distinction is between explicit, or declarative, memory and implicit, or nondeclarative, memory. The labels describe how memory is expressed or accessed, not how long it lasts.

Explicit memory: events and facts
Explicit memory is information a person can consciously try to remember and report. Two useful subcategories are:
- Episodic memory: memory for personally experienced events, generally tied to a particular time and place. Remembering a specific birthday celebration or trip is an example.
- Semantic memory: general knowledge, facts, words, and concepts. Knowing what a word means or recalling a geography fact are examples.
Episodic memory is recollection of an experience; semantic memory is knowing information. Richard F. Thompson and coauthors, in the National Academies chapter Memory: The Key to Consciousness (2005), discuss Endel Tulving’s conception of episodic recollection as “mental time travel”: consciously revisiting a remembered event.

Implicit memory: learning expressed in behavior
Implicit memory is prior learning that affects behavior without necessarily being consciously recalled. Procedural memory is a prominent example: knowing how to perform a learned skill, such as riding a bicycle or typing. Priming and conditioning are other implicit effects discussed in introductory accounts.
How are short-term memory and working memory different?
The terms are sometimes used interchangeably, but they are not exact synonyms. Short-term memory emphasizes temporary retention. Working memory includes holding information while actively processing, transforming, or using it; it can also draw on long-term knowledge. OpenStax describes short-term memory more accurately as a component of working memory, while the National Academies chapter likewise characterizes working memory as retaining new information while transforming and using it.

For instance, briefly keeping a number in mind emphasizes short-term retention. Mentally rearranging digits or using them in a calculation involves working memory because the information is being manipulated.
How to tell the categories apart
When identifying a memory example, ask what it retains, how it is accessed, and what role active processing plays. These questions are complementary, not mutually exclusive:
- Information: Is it sensory input, an event, a fact or concept, or a learned skill?
- Access: Can the person consciously recall and report it, or does prior learning show up mainly in behavior?
- Use: Is information merely being held temporarily, or is it being actively worked with?
Thus, recalling a specific event points to episodic memory; knowing a general fact points to semantic memory; carrying out a practiced skill points to procedural memory; and mentally working with information points to working memory.

This overview uses the human-psychology meaning of memory. Educational sources may arrange the labels somewhat differently, and the categories are explanatory frameworks rather than a single universally used hierarchy. The National Academies chapter notes that memory systems can have different properties and brain mechanisms. Nothing in these everyday examples alone establishes a medical diagnosis.
