If Hulu freezes or crashes, first check whether the problem affects one title, all Hulu content, or other apps on the same device. That comparison helps distinguish a title or service issue from a device or connection problem. Then check the connection, restart and update the device and app, and verify storage and compatibility before contacting Hulu.
Start by narrowing down what is failing
Try a different Hulu show or movie, then play a video in another streaming app on the same device. These comparisons are clues, not proof of a specific cause.
| What you observe | Useful next step |
|---|---|
| One Hulu title freezes, but other Hulu titles play | Try the affected title again later and check Hulu’s service or support information; the issue may be title-specific. |
| Several Hulu titles fail, but other apps work | Check Hulu’s service or support information, then proceed with app and device checks. |
| Hulu and other apps fail on one device | Check that device’s network connection and software. |
| Apps fail on multiple devices | Investigate the household connection, including other network activity. |
Roku Support notes that “An unstable internet connection can cause issues with loading videos and apps on your Roku device” in its Issues playing shows and movies on your Roku device guide. The same guide recommends comparing titles and apps when diagnosing playback trouble.

Confirm that the streaming device is online, and run its built-in network check if it has one. Hulu says its recommended sustained download speeds are:
#1 Best Overall

- TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.
| Hulu use | Hulu’s recommended sustained download speed |
|---|---|
| Streaming Library | 3.0 Mbps |
| Live streams | 8.0 Mbps |
| 4K | 16.0 Mbps |
| Reduced-quality streaming | Hulu says streaming may be possible at 1.5 Mbps |
These are Hulu recommendations, not guarantees against interruptions. A speed test captures a moment; sustained performance matters, and other people or devices using the connection can compete for bandwidth. Pause large downloads or other heavy internet use and check whether playback improves. Hulu’s guidance is in its internet speed recommendations.
Try Ethernet only if Wi-Fi instability is plausible
If both the streaming device and router have Ethernet ports, a wired connection can help determine whether Wi-Fi is contributing to the problem. Hulu Japan’s set-top-box guide suggests connecting directly to the router or modem by Ethernet when Wi-Fi playback is problematic. That guidance was updated in March 2020 and applies to its market and device context; its menus should not be treated as current universal instructions. A cable is a test, not a guaranteed fix.

Restart the device, then check for updates
Use the device’s own system restart option where available. On Roku, go to Home > Settings > System > Power > System restart; the Power menu may not appear on every Roku model. Roku also says unplugging the device for 10 seconds is another restart option. A system restart is less invasive than a factory reset and does not affect Roku settings.

Next, check for updates to the Hulu app and the device’s system software. Roku specifically recommends checking for app updates if an app will not open or crashes at launch. Menu labels and update steps vary on Fire TV, Apple TV, smart TVs, phones, and browsers, so use the device maker’s current instructions rather than applying Roku’s menu path to another platform.

Reinstall Hulu selectively
If Hulu still will not load after a restart and update check, remove and reinstall the app if your device allows it. On Roku, an app cannot be removed while its subscription is billed through Roku. On other platforms, removal and reinstall steps differ; consult the device maker’s instructions.
Check storage and device compatibility
Low-memory or app-launch messages
On Roku, messages such as “Not enough memory,” “Can’t run app,” or “Insufficient memory” may point to a connection problem or low storage. Roku recommends restarting the system and removing unused apps to free storage. Storage controls and error messages differ across televisions and streaming devices, so do not assume these Roku steps apply elsewhere.

Confirm the exact model is supported
Check Hulu’s current supported-device information for your precise model and operating system, particularly if the device is older. Hulu’s Roku support information says supported Roku devices run Roku version 11 or higher and recommends updating both the device and app. Hulu’s Android TV support information lists Android OS 6.0 or later for supported models, while warning that not all Android TV devices are supported. Meeting a version threshold alone does not establish that a particular model is compatible.
