Use separate, least-privilege Hugging Face tokens, keep sensitive repositories private, and revoke any exposed credential immediately. Token permissions and repository visibility are different controls: a private repository limits who can discover or access its contents, while a token determines what an authenticated identity can do. Organization membership, roles, and policies add a further access boundary.
This guide explains token scopes, private repository behavior, exact revocation choices, leaked-token response, secret scanning, CI/CD authentication, and organization audit evidence.
Token scope and repository visibility are separate controls
A Hugging Face access token is an application credential. It authenticates software such as a local Git client, notebook, inference server, or CI workflow. Repository visibility is a property of a model, dataset, or Space. Neither setting replaces the other.
- A private repository is hidden from users who do not have access, but an authorized token can still read or modify it according to its permission and the owner’s access.
- A read token is not made harmless by storing it in a private repository. If the token is copied into a public commit, anyone who obtains it may use its granted permissions until it is revoked.
- Making a repository private does not invalidate tokens, remove organization members, or undo credentials already exposed in logs, caches, forks, or downloaded files.
For that reason, treat visibility, identity membership, token scope, and revocation as four separate checks during both setup and incident response.

Which Hugging Face token should you create?
Hugging Face documents user access tokens with three principal roles. The effective permission is the intersection of the token’s role, the user’s repository rights, and any organization policy or membership restriction.
| Token role | What it permits | Suitable use | Risk if exposed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Read | Reads repositories that the user or an organization allows the user to read, including private repositories. | Downloading models or datasets, read-only automation, and inference clients that do not publish changes. | Confidential data can be read, but write operations are not granted by this role. |
| Write | Read access plus write actions where the user already has write permission. | Publishing models, pushing datasets, or maintaining repositories. | An attacker may alter, delete, rename, or push content wherever that identity has write rights. |
| Fine-grained | Can be restricted to selected resources and operations instead of broadly covering the user’s accessible repositories. | Production services and jobs that need one model, dataset, or narrowly defined set of repositories. | The blast radius is limited to the resources selected, although those resources remain fully exposed within the granted scope. |
Hugging Face recommends a separate token for each application or use. For example, do not reuse one credential for a laptop, a notebook, and an inference server. A separate token lets you revoke one workload without interrupting the others. For production, use a fine-grained token whenever the task supports it.
Example: limiting a gated-model download
If a job only needs to read one gated model, create a fine-grained token limited to that model rather than a token that can read every private model available to the user. The job still needs the user’s approval or other entitlement for the gated resource; a narrow token does not bypass those checks.
Organization policy can add an approval gate
Team and Enterprise organizations can require fine-grained tokens or administrator approval for eligible tokens. A token awaiting approval cannot access that organization’s resources. Denial is part of the approval workflow and can later be reversed; an Enterprise organization-level revocation is a separate action and permanently removes that token’s access to that organization. The same token may continue working on resources outside the organization.

How private repositories behave
Models and datasets can be public or private. Spaces support public, protected, and private visibility; protected Spaces are documented as available on PRO and Team & Enterprise plans.
For a private model or dataset repository, Hugging Face states that:
- It does not appear in other users’ search results.
- A user without permission who visits its URL receives
404 - Repo not found. - An unauthorized user cannot clone it.
Those behaviors describe discovery and repository access. They do not guarantee that a credential, a previously downloaded file, a local Git clone, or an organization member’s copy is protected. Review who has access and revoke credentials independently when circumstances change.

Organization roles determine what members can do
For repositories owned by an organization, the member role is another control layered on top of token permissions.

| Role | Practical capability |
|---|---|
read |
Read-only access to repositories the organization makes available to that member. |
contributor |
Write rights to repositories the member created; it does not provide blanket write access to every organization repository. |
write |
Applies to all organization repositories and permits actions such as creating, deleting, renaming, editing, and pushing content. |
admin |
Adds organization-profile and member-management powers. |
no_access |
Can be combined with resource groups so the member receives access only to selected resources. |
A read token held by an administrator can still be used only within the limits of the token and current account state; conversely, a write token cannot grant write access where the member has none. When someone changes teams or leaves an organization, remove or narrow membership as well as rotating relevant credentials.
How to revoke your own leaked token
If a token belonging to you appears in a public repository, issue tracker, build log, notebook, or chat, assume it is compromised. Do not wait for a scanner email or try to determine whether someone used it first.
- Sign in to Hugging Face and open your account’s Settings.
- Open Access Tokens.
- Identify the exposed token by its name, role, and creation or last-use information where shown.
- Delete or refresh (rotate) that token. Deletion invalidates the credential; refreshing creates a replacement while ending the old credential’s usefulness.
- Update the legitimate application, notebook, secret store, or deployment with the replacement token. Use the narrowest role and resource scope that the workload needs.
- Remove the exposed value from the source repository and logs where feasible, then inspect commit history, forks, caches, container layers, and build artifacts. Removing text does not undo a token that was already copied, so revocation remains the decisive step.
Keep each credential in a secret manager or protected environment variable. Never commit it to source code or paste it into a command line that may be retained in shell history or process logs.
How to revoke a Hugging Face token found in someone else’s code
When you discover a Hugging Face token belonging to another user, the documented global endpoint is POST /api/credentials/revoke. The request may contain several token values. A matching credential is invalidated immediately and stops working everywhere, and Hugging Face notifies its owner by email. The owner must create a new token to restore access.

Use an environment variable instead of exposing the raw value
Place the discovered value in a protected file or environment variable, then submit it without embedding the token literally in a command that could be logged. For example, a script can read HF_TOKEN_TO_REVOKE from the environment and send it in the request body. Follow your organization’s approved handling procedure for the temporary evidence file and delete it after the report is complete.
Interpret the HTTP response correctly
The revocation endpoint always returns 202 Accepted, whether or not any submitted token existed. A 202 response therefore does not confirm that the token was valid, active, or owned by a particular person. Submitting the same value again is harmless according to the documentation.
Global revocation versus organization-only revocation
Choose the boundary that matches the incident:
| Action | What stops working | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Global credential revocation | The matching token is invalidated everywhere it would otherwise work. | The token itself was exposed, regardless of which repositories or organizations it could reach. |
| Enterprise organization-level revocation | The token loses access to that organization but may continue working on resources outside it. | An organization administrator needs to cut a member token off from the organization without globally invalidating the member’s credential. |
If the token is leaked, organization-only revocation is not a substitute for global invalidation: the credential could still access a user’s personal or other organizational resources. Use the global credentials control for a token that must stop everywhere.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA practical response plan for a suspected credential leak
- Classify the credential. Determine whether it is your token, another user’s token, a service-account token, or an unknown value. Do not paste the full secret into a ticket or chat while investigating.
- Revoke at the correct scope. Delete or refresh your own token, use the documented revoke endpoint for a discovered Hugging Face token, or ask an Enterprise administrator to remove organization access when that is the intended containment boundary.
- Replace legitimate credentials. Have the owner or administrator issue a new token with a separate identity, least privilege, and a resource restriction where possible. Update every dependent workload deliberately rather than copying the old secret into new locations.
- Remove the exposure. Erase the value from current files, commits, logs, images, and artifacts where practical. Preserve only the minimum evidence needed for an investigation, stored securely.
- Review access and activity. Check organization membership, repository permissions, recent changes, and audit events for unexpected visibility, token, or policy modifications.
- Document the outcome. Record which credential was revoked, the time, affected resources, replacement owner, and any systems that still need updates.
Private visibility can reduce further discovery, but it cannot retroactively make a leaked token safe. Treat the credential and the repository as separate incident objects.

Secret scanning and what an alert means
Hugging Face says it runs TruffleHog on each push to detect hard-coded secrets. When a secret is verified to work, it emails users. A finding that cannot be verified is not proof that the secret is invalid: verification can fail for technical reasons, and a credential may work against more than one service.
- For a verified token, revoke immediately and then investigate exposure.
- For an unverified token-shaped value, handle it as potentially active until the owner confirms revocation or replacement.
- Do not rely solely on Hub-side scanning. Add secret scanning to local development, pull requests, CI logs, container builds, and generated notebooks.
Scanning detects some exposures; it does not replace least-privilege design, separate credentials, or a tested revocation procedure.
Safer CI/CD authentication with Trusted Publishers
Long-lived Hub tokens stored as CI secrets create a durable target. Hugging Face’s Trusted Publishers approach lets a supported CI provider exchange its OIDC identity token for a short-lived Hub token when a workflow starts. The documented provider setups include GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, CircleCI, and Bitbucket Pipelines.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The resulting Hub credential is temporary; the documentation’s diagram describes a one-hour validity period, but provider support and lifetime details can change, so verify the current setup before relying on that value operationally. The exchange ties issuance to the workflow identity instead of keeping a permanent Hub secret in the repository’s CI settings.
Use organization audit logs after containment
Organization audit logs help reconstruct what changed before and after an access incident. Documented event categories include repository visibility changes, two-factor-authentication enforcement, network settings, organization API-token rotation, and token approval, denial, and revocation.
Programmatic export requires a user or service-account token with the organization’s audit-log export permission. Limit that export credential separately, store downloaded logs securely, and correlate event times with CI runs, repository commits, membership changes, and deployment logs. Audit records can show administrative changes, but they do not prove that a revoked token was never copied or used elsewhere; pair them with credential rotation and source cleanup.
Design rules that prevent repeat incidents
- Create one token per application or operational use.
- Prefer fine-grained tokens for production and narrow them to named resources.
- Use read scope for downloads and reserve write scope for publishing workflows that require it.
- Use service accounts for automated organization workflows when available. They are decoupled from individual members, can be scoped at organization or repository level, and are documented as an Enterprise feature.
- Store service-account tokens securely. The token is shown only when created or rotated; rotation immediately stops the previous token from working.
- Use Trusted Publishers and OIDC for supported CI providers instead of a permanent CI secret.
- Review organization roles, resource groups, approval policies, and audit events regularly.
Hugging Face’s own documentation gives the warning plainly: “Try not to leak your token! Though you can always rotate it, anyone will be able to read or write your private repos in the meantime which is 💩” The informal wording does not change the operational point: rotation is available, but exposure creates a window of access that must be closed promptly.
