Hue, saturation, and value (HSV) is a way to describe a color with three coordinates: its color family, its strength relative to gray, and its modeled brightness level. It is a convenient set of controls in many color pickers, but it is not the same as HSL and does not provide equal perceptual steps between colors.

What does HSV stand for?

HSV stands for hue, saturation, and value. It represents color using those three components rather than separate red, green, and blue channel amounts. Microsoft Learn describes HSV as a normalized color space, though the values displayed to users depend on the software.

What do hue, saturation, and value mean?

Hue: the color family

Hue identifies the color family, such as red, yellow, or blue. It is commonly arranged around a circle and shown as an angle: Microsoft Learn uses 0 degrees for red and describes hues 180 degrees apart as complementary. Because hue wraps around, the start and end of a full turn point in the same direction.

Saturation: strength relative to gray

Saturation describes how much chromatic color is present relative to gray. At zero saturation, the color is grayscale and changing hue has no visible effect. A high saturation setting produces a more chromatic result, but the same numeric setting does not guarantee equal perceived intensity across different hues.

Value: the brightness axis

Value is the model’s value or brightness component. At zero value, the result is black. A high value does not necessarily produce white: the color also depends on saturation. In particular, value should not be treated as interchangeable with HSL lightness or physical luminance.

How do HSV controls work in a color picker?

A typical HSV picker lets you choose a hue family, then adjust saturation to move toward or away from gray, and adjust value to change the modeled brightness level. These controls are useful for direct color adjustment, but they do not mean that equal slider movements produce equal-looking changes to human observers.

Units vary by application. Some interfaces show hue in degrees and saturation and value as percentages; others use normalized decimal coordinates. Graphviz, for example, documents HSV components from 0.0 to 1.0. Check the application’s labels before interpreting or transferring a set of coordinates.

Is HSV the same as HSB or HSL?

HSB is generally another name for HSV: the final component is called brightness instead of value. HSL is different. It uses hue, saturation, and lightness, so its third coordinate is not simply HSV value under another label.

Model Components What the coordinates express
HSV Hue, saturation, value Color family, chromatic strength relative to gray, and value/brightness axis
HSB Hue, saturation, brightness Generally the same model as HSV with a different name for the final component
HSL Hue, saturation, lightness A distinct model using lightness rather than HSV value
RGB Red, green, blue Numerical amounts of the red, green, and blue components

The W3C describes HSL as a complement to RGB, while MDN explains that HSL lightness is not luminance. HSV and HSL offer controls that can feel more direct than adjusting RGB channels, but neither should be mistaken for a perceptually uniform scale.

How does HSV relate to CSS and web colors?

CSS documents RGB and HSL color syntax, and also includes HWB. It does not provide an hsv() function; MDN notes that HSV is represented in CSS through the related HWB model. When working with web colors, identify the color space and syntax you are using rather than assuming that an HSV value can be pasted directly into CSS.

When is HSV useful, and what should it not imply?

  • Useful for interactive adjustment: Hue, saturation, and value separate controls that many people find easier to manipulate than raw RGB channels.
  • Not a complete model of human vision: HSV is a coordinate representation, not a statement that people perceive color in three equally spaced steps.
  • Not an accessibility test: HSV coordinates alone do not establish whether text and backgrounds have sufficient contrast. Use the relevant accessibility method and color specification for that assessment.
  • Not a universal numeric format: Coordinate ranges and displayed units depend on the application; confirm them before sharing or converting values.
