Yes. Huddle explicitly includes renters among the people its contents insurance is designed for. Huddle Black is the insurer’s highest cover tier and can be bought as contents-only cover, so renters can insure their belongings without insuring the building. It is not landlord insurance, and it does not cover the landlord’s property.
What Huddle Black means for a renter
Huddle describes contents insurance as cover for belongings owned by people who rent a home, including items such as furniture, electronics, bicycles, jewellery and sporting equipment. Black is available for contents-only policies as well as home-only and combined home-and-contents policies. Huddle describes it as its highest level, with Comprehensive benefits plus additional benefits and higher limits. Check Huddle’s current product information and the applicable policy documents before choosing cover.
For a renter, the relevant product is contents-only insurance. Building cover is designed for owner-occupiers, and Huddle says its products are not designed for landlords. Contents cover is for your belongings, not the building or the landlord’s fixtures and possessions. The policy is issued by Huddle Insurance, a business name of Open Insurance Pty Ltd, on behalf of The Hollard Insurance Company Pty Ltd. Huddle recommends reading the applicable Product Disclosure Statement (PDS), Financial Services Guide and Target Market Determination. Huddle’s disclosure documents and eligibility information set out the terms that apply.

Flood and rainwater events
Huddle says flood cover is included for home and/or contents policies, but conditions can affect when and how much cover applies. A 72-hour restriction applies after first buying the policy or after a gap in cover, subject to an exception for continuity transfers. During that period, increases to the sum insured are not covered for the relevant rainwater or flood events. For each flood event, the excess is the higher of the basic excess you selected and a fixed $500 excess. Check the current PDS for the definitions, event terms and any applicable exceptions. Accidental damage
Accidental damage is included with Comprehensive or Black, subject to policy exclusions. Huddle gives scratching, chipping or denting through normal use as examples of damage that is not covered. The PDS defines the covered events and exclusions; “accidental damage” does not mean every mark or breakage is claimable. Huddle’s accidental-damage FAQ.
Theft, liability and other benefits
CHOICE’s policy review lists theft and attempted-theft cover, liability cover up to $30 million, flood and storm cover, and accidental damage among the policy features, all subject to exclusions and policy conditions. It also lists benefits for visitors’ contents, spoiled food and moving house. These are secondary-source details, so confirm whether each benefit and limit applies to your current Black contents policy in Huddle’s PDS and your certificate. CHOICE’s Huddle Black review.
Check sublimits for valuables, not just your total sum insured
Your contents sum insured is not necessarily the maximum available for every individual item or category. Huddle says valuables limits vary by cover level; some items can be individually listed on the certificate. Its FAQ gives examples of bicycle and portable musical-instrument limits of up to $1,000 under Basic or $2,000 under Comprehensive. Those examples do not establish the Black-specific limit. Huddle also describes Portable Valuables Cover as an option for items taken away from home. Verify the current limit, item definition and any listing requirement for each valuable in the PDS and certificate. Huddle’s valuables and portable-cover information.
CHOICE’s review lists the following category limits. They are secondary-source figures, not a substitute for the limits shown in your current policy documents:
Rank #3
| Category or benefit | Limit listed by CHOICE |
|---|---|
| Jewellery, artworks and collections | Up to $10,000 per item, set or pair, subject to an overall limit of 20% of the contents sum insured |
| Digital media | Up to $2,000 per item, set or pair, and $5,000 overall |
| Visitors’ contents | Up to $5,000 |
| Spoiled food | Up to $2,000, with a $100 excess |
| Pet cover | Not included, according to CHOICE |
| Overlapping cover when moving to a new house | Up to 14 days, according to CHOICE |
| Moving-house cover | Fire, collision or removal-vehicle overturning, up to the contents sum insured, according to CHOICE |
See CHOICE’s Huddle Black review, then verify the current wording and figures against Huddle’s live PDS and your certificate. CHOICE also says new-for-old replacement applies with exclusions; claims may be settled by repair, replacement or payment, with settlement terms varying by claim type and policy conditions.
How much does Huddle Black cost for renters?
There is no reliable renter-specific price in the available published information. CHOICE says it scored Huddle Black on cover only because the insurer does not share its price data. Finder’s published average for comprehensive home policies is not a quote for a renter’s contents-only Black policy, so it cannot tell you what you will pay. Get a quote using your own address, contents sum insured and selected options.
Rank #4
When comparing quotes, use equivalent cover settings and check the basic excess and event-specific excesses, flood terms and waiting period, accidental-damage cover, item and category sublimits, portable valuables options, other benefits, claims settlement terms and exclusions. A lower premium may reflect a different excess, sum insured or scope of cover rather than a better match.
What Home Assist does—and does not promise
Huddle says Home Assist is provided by Allianz Global Assistance with Black Home, Contents, or Home and Contents policies. It offers 24/7 assistance for ten listed emergencies, with two call-outs per 12-month membership and up to $300 including GST off each eligible call-out. That is a capped assistance benefit, not an unlimited repair service. Check the separate service terms for eligible emergencies, call-out conditions and exclusions. Huddle’s Home Assist information.

How to decide whether it fits
- Confirm the policy type. Choose contents-only cover if you are renting and want cover for your belongings, not the building.
- Estimate your contents sum insured. Account for the cost of replacing your possessions, then check whether valuable individual items need to be listed.
- Read the current PDS and certificate. Check the Black benefits, sublimits, exclusions, excesses and flood terms that apply to your quote.
- Compare like for like. Compare another contents-only quote using the same address, sum insured, excess and optional cover settings.
- Decide whether the price matches the cover. A quote is necessary: published home-policy averages and review scores do not establish the right premium or suitability for your circumstances.
Insurance terms and availability can change. This is general information, not individual advice; use Huddle’s current disclosure documents and quote to assess whether the policy meets your needs.
