For the earliest and faintest galaxies, the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is usually the better instrument. Cosmic expansion shifts much of the ultraviolet and visible light from very remote galaxies into infrared wavelengths, where Webb is optimized and Hubble is less capable. Webb also gathers substantially more light. Hubble remains essential for ultraviolet and visible observations, so the strongest scientific answer is not that Webb replaces Hubble, but that the two observatories answer different parts of the same galaxy question.
The short answer: Webb for the earliest galaxies, Hubble for complementary detail
If “better” means detecting the most distant, faintest galaxies and studying the first generations of galaxies, Webb has the advantage. Its 6.6-meter primary mirror collects far more light than Hubble’s 2.4-meter mirror, and its instruments cover near- and mid-infrared wavelengths where redshifted light from early galaxies arrives.
Hubble is the better fit when the observation depends on near-ultraviolet or visible light. It can reveal young stars, hot gas and structural features at wavelengths that Webb cannot observe, while also supplying some near-infrared data. A galaxy study that combines both telescopes can cover a broader portion of the spectrum than either observatory alone.
There is an important qualification: a larger mirror does not make Webb sharper in every image. Angular resolution depends on mirror diameter and observing wavelength. Webb’s resolution in near-infrared light is broadly comparable to Hubble’s resolution in visible light, even though Webb is much more sensitive to faint infrared sources.

What “distant” means when astronomers compare the telescopes
Distance in astronomy is also a measure of time. Light from a more remote galaxy takes longer to reach Earth, so a telescope sees that galaxy as it existed farther in the past. Looking at a very high-redshift galaxy is therefore a way of studying an earlier stage of cosmic history.
As light travels through the expanding universe, its wavelength is stretched. This effect, called cosmological redshift, moves light toward the red and infrared portions of the spectrum. A galaxy that emitted ultraviolet or visible light billions of years ago can be observed primarily at infrared wavelengths today.
That shift is the central reason Webb is favored for the earliest galaxies. Webb was designed to observe galaxies at redshifts of 15 or more, according to NASA’s Webb FAQ. That is a design goal, not a statement that every galaxy at that redshift has been detected or confirmed.
Redshift changes which telescope is useful
Suppose two galaxies have similar intrinsic brightness. The more distant one generally appears fainter, and its emitted light is shifted farther toward longer wavelengths. Detecting it requires both enough light-collecting power and detectors that operate efficiently at those wavelengths. Webb addresses both requirements for infrared observations.
Hubble can still contribute to a high-redshift study when some of the galaxy’s shorter-wavelength light remains within Hubble’s range, or when researchers need ultraviolet and visible measurements of related objects. A non-detection by Hubble is not proof that Webb will see nothing; it may simply mean that the source’s strongest observed light lies outside Hubble’s most effective bands.
Wavelength coverage: the fundamental difference
Wavelength coverage describes which parts of the electromagnetic spectrum a telescope can detect. It is different from sensitivity, which describes how faint a source can be detected, and from angular resolution, which describes how finely separated details can appear.

| Hubble | 0.115–2.5 micrometres in NASA’s telescope overview | Near-ultraviolet and visible observations, with some near-infrared capability |
| James Webb | 0.6–28.8 micrometres in NASA’s telescope overview; 0.6–28 micrometres in NASA’s Webb FAQ | Red visible, near-infrared and mid-infrared observations |
The two NASA pages give slightly different upper endpoints for Webb’s range: 28.8 micrometres in the telescope overview and 28 micrometres in the FAQ. The difference is a source-specific presentation of the stated range, not evidence that Webb has two different operating limits.

Hubble was optimized for shorter ultraviolet and visible wavelengths. NASA describes Webb as covering red visible light through near- and mid-infrared wavelengths. That division makes Webb particularly valuable when cosmic redshift has moved a galaxy’s emitted ultraviolet or visible light into the infrared.
Light-collecting power and faint-object sensitivity
A telescope’s primary mirror gathers photons. More collecting area means more photons from a faint galaxy can reach the instruments during an exposure, improving the chance of detecting a source and measuring its spectrum or structure.
| Specification | Hubble | James Webb | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Primary mirror diameter | 2.4 metres | 6.6 metres | Webb has the larger aperture |
| Light-collecting area | 4.55 m² | 25.37 m² | NASA’s overview gives a 5.6-times area ratio |
| Rounded comparison | NASA’s comparison page says Webb has more than six times Hubble’s light-collecting area | The rounded wording and the 5.6-times tabulated ratio should not be treated as contradictory measurements | |
| Broad faintness claim | NASA says Webb can view objects up to 100 times fainter than Hubble can see | This is a broad institutional comparison, not a guarantee for every target, filter, exposure or instrument | |
The area figures and the “more than six times” description come from NASA pages whose publication dates are not stated. The 100-times-fainter statement should be read in the same qualified way. Actual performance depends on detector noise, exposure time, wavelength, background light, source spectrum and the scientific measurement being attempted.
“Fainter” also does not mean “100 times farther away.” Brightness decreases with distance, but redshift, the galaxy’s intrinsic luminosity, observing wavelength and exposure strategy all affect whether a source is detectable. NASA’s comparison is useful for conveying Webb’s sensitivity advantage, not for converting directly into a distance limit.

Angular resolution is the ability to distinguish two nearby points or to separate fine features in a galaxy. It depends on the diameter of the mirror and the wavelength being observed. Longer wavelengths are intrinsically harder to resolve at the same aperture, so comparing a visible-light Hubble image with an infrared Webb image without stating the wavelengths can be misleading.

| Resolution figure | Source and condition | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| 0.05 arcseconds | NASA telescope overview for Hubble near 0.5 micrometres | A visible-light reference value |
| 0.03 arcseconds | NASA telescope overview for Webb at 0.6 micrometres | A near-red-visible reference value from the same overview |
| Slightly better than 0.1 arcseconds | ESA/Webb FAQ for Webb at 2 micrometres | An infrared value that must not be compared with the 0.03-arcsecond figure as though the wavelengths were identical |
| About the same resolution | NASA comparison of Webb near-infrared light with Hubble visible light, around 700 nanometres for Hubble | Webb’s infrared sharpness is broadly comparable to Hubble’s visible-light sharpness |
These values illustrate why the statement “Webb is sharper” is too broad. Webb’s larger mirror helps offset the resolution penalty of infrared wavelengths, but its principal advantage for distant galaxies is the combination of infrared coverage and faint-light sensitivity. Hubble can produce extremely sharp visible and ultraviolet observations within its design range.
NASA summarizes the comparison this way: “Despite its larger size, Webb delivers about the same resolution in near-infrared light as Hubble attains in visible light.”
Which telescope is better for specific galaxy questions?
Finding the earliest, faintest galaxies
Choose Webb when the main goal is to locate galaxies from the early universe or to detect very faint sources whose light has been strongly redshifted. Its infrared instruments and larger collecting area are aligned with that problem. Webb can detect redshifted emission that may be weak or inaccessible in Hubble’s shorter-wavelength bands.
Measuring ultraviolet emission and hot young stars
Choose Hubble when ultraviolet data are central. Ultraviolet light traces hot stars, energetic gas and other processes that can be important for understanding how galaxies formed stars. Webb cannot substitute for Hubble’s ultraviolet coverage because Webb’s stated range begins around 0.6 micrometres.
Studying visible-light morphology
Hubble remains a strong choice for visible-light views of spiral arms, star-forming regions, dust lanes and interactions when those features are best expressed at shorter wavelengths. Its long record of calibrated imaging also makes it valuable for comparing present observations with earlier surveys.
Examining dust-obscured regions
Webb is generally preferable when dust blocks visible light. Infrared wavelengths can pass through some obscuring material more effectively than visible wavelengths, allowing researchers to investigate embedded star formation and the structures around it. The exact advantage depends on the dust column, the wavelength selected and the instrument mode.

Building a broad-spectrum picture
Use both observatories when the scientific question spans ultraviolet, visible and infrared light. Hubble can measure the shorter-wavelength side of a galaxy’s spectrum, while Webb extends the coverage into the near- and mid-infrared. Together, those measurements can separate effects that would be difficult to distinguish in a single wavelength range.

Start with the wavelength required by the science, then compare the telescopes’ resolution at that wavelength. A visible-light Hubble observation may show finer apparent detail than a long-wavelength Webb observation, while a Webb observation at a shorter permitted wavelength can have excellent resolution. There is no single sharpness ranking independent of wavelength.
Can Hubble see the same distant galaxies as Webb?
Sometimes, but not always with the same brightness or information. If a galaxy emits enough light within Hubble’s ultraviolet, visible or near-infrared range, Hubble may detect it. For very high-redshift galaxies, however, the wavelengths carrying most of the observable signal can move into Webb’s infrared range, where Hubble has less coverage and sensitivity.
Even when both telescopes detect the same object, they may reveal different components. Hubble can show shorter-wavelength emission from unobscured or actively star-forming regions, while Webb can reveal redder light, older stellar populations, warm dust or spectral features shifted into the infrared. A difference between the images is therefore often a difference in wavelength rather than a disagreement about the galaxy’s shape.
Researchers also use Hubble’s non-detection as useful information. If a source appears in Webb data but not in a Hubble band, that pattern can constrain the source’s redshift, dust attenuation or stellar population. The interpretation requires calibrated measurements rather than a simple “one telescope saw it and the other failed” conclusion.

- Define the physical question. Decide whether the target is an early galaxy, ultraviolet star formation, visible morphology, dust-obscured structure, infrared emission or a combination.
- Predict the observed wavelengths. Account for cosmological redshift. Emission produced in ultraviolet or visible light may arrive in near- or mid-infrared bands if the source is sufficiently distant.
- Check the source brightness. Estimate whether the target is bright enough for the required exposure and measurement. Webb’s larger collecting area helps with faint sources, but instrument background and exposure time still matter.
- Match the angular-resolution requirement. Compare resolution at the actual wavelengths under consideration. Do not use a visible-light number for one telescope to claim superiority in a much longer infrared band.
- Choose the instrument mode. Imaging, spectroscopy and different filters answer different questions. A telescope’s headline wavelength range does not by itself guarantee that every feature can be measured with equal efficiency.
- Consider complementary observations. If the project needs ultraviolet through mid-infrared coverage, plan for data from both observatories where available. The combined spectrum can provide more physical information than either dataset alone.
How to read common claims about Hubble and Webb
“Webb sees farther”
This is a useful shorthand for Webb’s ability to detect many earlier, fainter galaxies, but it is not a literal edge at a single distance. “Farther back” depends on redshift, source luminosity, wavelength, exposure and whether the object has been confirmed spectroscopically. Webb’s design target of redshift 15 or more describes intended capability, not a universal detection record.

“Webb is six times more powerful”
The defensible version is that NASA’s comparison page describes more than six times Hubble’s light-collecting area, while NASA’s telescope overview lists 25.37 m² for Webb and 4.55 m² for Hubble, a 5.6-times ratio. Neither phrasing means Webb is six times better at every task. Hubble still has wavelength access that Webb does not.
“Webb is 100 times more sensitive”
NASA states that Webb can view objects up to 100 times fainter than Hubble can see. Treat this as a broad comparison across the observatories’ capabilities. It is not a fixed multiplier for every filter, detector, target spectrum, background level or exposure time.
“The biggest mirror must produce the sharpest image”
Mirror diameter improves resolving power, but wavelength changes the comparison. Webb’s long-wavelength observations face a larger diffraction limit than visible-light observations, and ESA’s FAQ gives Webb’s resolution at 2 micrometres as slightly better than 0.1 arcseconds. The correct question is always: sharper at which wavelength and under which observing conditions?

What each telescope contributes to a joint study
Hubble’s role
- Near-ultraviolet observations unavailable to Webb.
- Visible-light imaging with a well-established archive for time-baseline comparisons.
- Some near-infrared measurements that overlap with Webb’s shorter-wavelength capability.
- Independent evidence about whether a high-redshift candidate has detectable shorter-wavelength emission.
Webb’s role
- Near- and mid-infrared sensitivity suited to redshifted early-galaxy light.
- Greater collecting area for faint sources.
- Access to wavelengths beyond Hubble’s stated upper range.
- Observations designed to address galaxies at very high redshift, including the redshift-15-or-higher design goal stated by NASA.
The result is complementary coverage rather than a simple winner. Webb extends the view toward earlier and redder light; Hubble preserves access to shorter wavelengths and supplies measurements that cannot be reconstructed from Webb data.
Practical verdict
For a reader asking which telescope is better for viewing distant galaxies, the answer is James Webb for the earliest and faintest galaxies. Its infrared optimization and substantially larger collecting area directly address the effects of cosmological redshift and the weak light from remote sources.
That answer changes when the target question changes. Hubble is the appropriate choice for ultraviolet work and remains highly valuable for visible-light structure. When a project needs the broadest physical picture, the best approach is to combine Webb’s infrared observations with Hubble’s ultraviolet and visible data rather than treating one observatory as a replacement for the other.
