Huawei’s LogicFolding is no longer only a roadmap concept: the Kirin 9050 Pro in the Mate XT 2 is the first identified commercial implementation. Huawei says preliminary Kirin 2027 silicon met its internal targets, but no independent compute, graphics or AI benchmarks have been published. The architecture may improve efficiency without requiring a conventional 1.4-nanometer manufacturing process, yet Huawei has not disclosed a process node for the shipping chip.
What Huawei LogicFolding is designed to do
LogicFolding is a vertically stacked logic and hybrid-bonding architecture introduced by Huawei under its Tau (τ) Scaling Law. Instead of placing every circuit block in one largely horizontal layer, Huawei distributes selected blocks across multiple silicon layers and connects them with dense vertical links.

Those shorter vertical routes are intended to reduce resistance, capacitance and signal delay. Huawei’s Tau framework treats delay and whole-system efficiency as important scaling measures, rather than relying only on the name of a lithography node. In practical terms, the approach changes circuit arrangement and packaging so data can travel shorter distances inside the processor.
What hybrid bonding contributes
Hybrid bonding joins silicon dies directly with very fine interconnects. Huawei’s German roadmap announcement describes a current bonding pitch of 1.5 micrometers and a Kirin 2027 target of 1 micrometer. The same roadmap moves from roughly 50 million vertical connections in the current implementation to more than 100 million for Kirin 2027.

More connections can provide greater bandwidth between stacked dies, but they also increase alignment, thermal-management and manufacturing demands. A finer pitch is therefore an engineering target, not by itself proof of a faster phone or a successful high-volume process.
The first shipping LogicFolding processor
Huawei’s September 2026 product announcement identifies the Kirin 9050 Pro in the Mate XT 2 as the first commercial LogicFolding processor. Huawei reports the following generation-to-generation changes:
| Measure | Huawei’s reported result | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| Effective transistor density | About 155 to 238 million transistors per square millimeter | A 55% increase, according to Huawei in 2026; this is a company figure, not an independent measurement |
| NPU energy at the same performance | 66% lower | Huawei’s claimed efficiency improvement for the neural-processing unit |
| GPU energy at the same performance | 58% lower | Huawei’s claimed same-performance reduction for graphics |
| CPU performance-core energy at the same performance | 41% lower | Huawei’s claimed reduction for a performance core |
| Vertical connections | Approximately 50 million at a 1.5 µm pitch | Huawei’s description of the current implementation |
“Same performance” in these claims means the stated workload is delivered with less energy; it does not mean the chip is automatically 66%, 58% or 41% faster. Huawei has not published the test workloads, power limits, temperatures or independent laboratory data needed to reproduce those percentages.
Huawei also says 381 chips have been designed and mass-produced under the Tau Scaling Law over six years. That is a company-reported program total and does not mean all 381 chips use LogicFolding or the same stacking arrangement.
What the early Kirin 2027 result actually establishes
An October 14, 2026 report from Wccftech says preliminary Kirin 2027 silicon met Huawei’s targets. The report also explicitly says Huawei released no compute, graphics or AI performance data for that chip. “Met targets” should therefore be read as an internal engineering or manufacturing milestone, not as a third-party speed ranking.
The roadmap targets
Huawei’s stated Kirin 2027 goals include a 1 µm hybrid-bonding pitch and more than 100 million vertical connections. Those figures describe the intended design direction. They do not confirm final production yield, retail availability, sustained clock speed or battery life in a shipping phone.
What remains unverified
No independent benchmark currently establishes how Kirin 2027 compares with a 3 nm or 1.4 nm processor. There are also no public figures for its CPU, GPU or NPU throughput, memory bandwidth, thermal envelope, yield or supply volume. Any claim that it matches a particular commercial node or rival chip would go beyond the available evidence.
LogicFolding is not the same thing as a new process node
LogicFolding changes how circuit blocks are arranged and connected. A process node describes the semiconductor manufacturing technology used to fabricate transistors and wires. Stacking and bonding can improve effective density and data movement even when the underlying process node remains undisclosed.
Huawei says that by 2031, its high-end Tau-based chips are expected to reach a transistor density equivalent to a 14 Å (1.4 nm) process. That is a future company projection, not an announcement that the Kirin 9050 Pro was fabricated on a conventional 1.4 nm node.
Does it replace EUV?
There is no evidence that LogicFolding itself replaces extreme-ultraviolet lithography or any other fabrication tool. The architecture is compatible with the broader manufacturing process used to make its dies. Huawei has not disclosed the Kirin 9050 Pro’s process node, lithography equipment, yield or complete supply chain, so the public record cannot show whether a particular advanced-node capability was avoided, substituted or used.
TechRadar reported that Huawei supplied the density and energy figures and that they lacked independent verification or peer-reviewed confirmation. Tom’s Hardware likewise characterized the 2027 and 1.4 nm-class numbers as roadmap or company claims requiring further analysis.

What a teardown can and cannot prove
Tom’s Hardware reported a teardown showing two bonded dies in the Kirin 9050 Pro. The lower die was described as carrying substantial cache, I/O and other support functions. This is useful physical evidence that a two-die bonded implementation exists in a commercial processor.
A teardown cannot, by itself, validate every transistor-density, energy-efficiency or performance number in Huawei’s announcement. It identifies the package and major die arrangement, while the headline efficiency figures require controlled measurements and access to Huawei’s test conditions.

The most useful comparison is multidimensional. A single “nanometer” label cannot capture the trade-offs between density, energy, bonding complexity and manufacturing maturity.
| Comparison axis | Current LogicFolding evidence | Kirin 2027 status | Evidence quality |
|---|---|---|---|
| Effective transistor density | 155 to 238 MTr/mm², a reported 55% rise | Target not publicly quantified beyond the roadmap direction | Huawei claim; no independent measurement |
| Performance per watt | 66% lower NPU, 58% lower GPU and 41% lower CPU-core energy at stated same performance | No public compute, graphics or AI results | Huawei claim for the shipping chip; no 2027 benchmark |
| Bonding and interconnect | About 50 million vertical links at 1.5 µm | More than 100 million links at 1 µm targeted | Roadmap and company description |
| Manufacturing evidence | Two bonded dies observed in a teardown; process node, yield and supply chain undisclosed | Preliminary silicon reportedly met internal targets | Partial physical evidence; no independent process audit |
| Product maturity | Kirin 9050 Pro is identified in the Mate XT 2 | Early silicon and roadmap stage | Shipping product versus unbenchmarked future result |
What this means for phone buyers and chip watchers
The Mate XT 2 is the relevant product if you want a device identified by Huawei as using LogicFolding today. The architecture’s reported value is primarily efficiency and interconnect density, so real-world benefits would appear in sustained workloads, thermal behavior and battery endurance rather than in a node number alone.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor Kirin 2027, wait for retail hardware and independent testing before treating Huawei’s target as a performance claim. The decisive measurements will include standardized application and graphics tests, AI throughput, power draw at matched workloads, sustained performance after heating, and battery life. Until those data exist, the responsible conclusion is that Huawei has demonstrated a shipping stacked design and reported successful early silicon, not that it has proven 3 nm or 1.4 nm-class performance.
Bottom line
LogicFolding represents a shift from conventional two-dimensional routing toward vertically connected, hybrid-bonded logic. Huawei has moved the concept into the Kirin 9050 Pro, reports substantial density and same-performance energy gains, and says preliminary Kirin 2027 silicon met internal targets. Those achievements are significant engineering milestones, but the public evidence does not yet establish an advanced-node equivalent, independent performance leadership or the final behavior of Kirin 2027 in a phone.
