HarmonyOS NEXT is no longer Huawei’s main consumer version label. Huawei introduced the pure-HarmonyOS release as HarmonyOS NEXT in 2024, but its current consumer documentation uses the version names HarmonyOS 5, HarmonyOS 5.1, HarmonyOS 6.0, and HarmonyOS 6.1.
The latest official support page lists devices in the HarmonyOS 6.1 upgrade-testing program. It covers phones, tablets, PCs, and wearables, but the schedule applies to mainland China only. A device appearing on the list does not mean that its OTA update arrives immediately or that every regional, carrier, or storage variant is eligible.
Current HarmonyOS 6.1 supported-device list
Huawei’s current model page lists the following devices for the HarmonyOS 6.1 program. The Chinese edition names are retained where Huawei uses them to distinguish a particular configuration.

HarmonyOS NEXT and HarmonyOS update timeline
| Date | What happened |
|---|---|
| October 8, 2024 | Huawei opened the first HarmonyOS 5 public-beta program and directed users to the model-specific upgrade plan. |
| October 22, 2024 | Huawei presented HarmonyOS NEXT at its “Native HarmonyOS Night” event. |
| 2025 | Huawei expanded HarmonyOS 5 and introduced HarmonyOS 5.1. Current support documentation treats 5.1 as a normal upgrade branch rather than using NEXT as the standard consumer label. |
| October 22, 2025 | Huawei released HarmonyOS 6 and opened its public beta. Huawei said more than 23 million terminal devices were already running HarmonyOS 5 at that point. |
| Current support program | Huawei’s support site lists HarmonyOS 6.1 devices, including Mate 80, Mate X7, Pura 80, nova 15, tablet, PC, and wearable models. |
Huawei has not published one universal date for every eligible model. Rollouts can be phased, and the actual offer depends on the model, software baseline, configuration, region, and whether the device is in an early-access program.
How to check for the update
From HarmonyOS 5
- Open Settings.
- Tap the device name at the top of Settings.
- Tap Check for updates.
- On the Software update page, tap Check for updates again.
- If an update is offered, download and install it.
From HarmonyOS 4.2 or 4.3
- Open Settings > System & updates > Software update.
- Tap Download and install.
- When the download finishes, tap Go to upgrade.
- Review the important notice and tap Agree and continue.
- Complete the backup step and allow the device to restart.
The wording can vary slightly by device and language, but these are Huawei’s documented menu paths.
Joining early access or a public beta
Use Settings > search for “Software update” > three-dot menu > Upgrade early access. On a device moving from HarmonyOS 4.x, select the available public-beta version in Upgrade early access.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

If the device already has a HarmonyOS 6 stable release, Huawei directs users to Settings > search for “Software update” > HarmonyOS 6 card, then search for and install the offered version.
Prepare before upgrading
- Back up the device with Huawei Mobile Assistant, Phone Clone/Data Clone, or cloud backup.
- Back up data inside QQ, WeChat, and other third-party applications separately when required.
- Install the model’s required baseline software version first. Huawei does not publish one baseline that applies to every model.
- Use Wi-Fi; the update package can consume substantial mobile data.
- Charge the device above 50%.
- Do not attempt the upgrade on a rooted device.
Pay particular attention to older backups. Huawei says backup records from HarmonyOS 4.3 and earlier cannot currently be restored normally on devices running HarmonyOS 5 or later. Huawei also says devices running HarmonyOS 5 or later cannot currently connect to Huawei Mobile Assistant on macOS.
Why a listed device may not see the update
A matching family name is not enough. Huawei’s detailed upgrade pages distinguish individual model numbers, storage configurations, carrier versions, and regional editions. The device must match an eligible configuration and normally must be running the required baseline version.

Other common causes include:
- The rollout has not reached the device yet.
- The device is enrolled in a different early-access or beta channel.
- The battery is at or below the required level.
- The device is rooted.
- The model is outside mainland China or belongs to a region excluded from the published plan.
- The software package is being reviewed for that specific configuration.
Applications may also display adaptation warnings after the upgrade. Huawei’s upgrade flow can show an application list and allow users to select apps whose data they want to retain. Back up important app data before proceeding.

Mainland China limitation
The HarmonyOS 5, 5.1, 6, and 6.1 schedules covered by Huawei’s cited support pages apply to mainland China and exclude Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan. Do not assume that a global-market Huawei device will receive the mainland OTA simply because a Chinese model with the same product-family name appears on the list.
If you cancel early access
Closing a HarmonyOS 6 beta or public-test enrollment does not immediately remove a package that the device has already found or downloaded. Huawei says the system may take approximately 24 hours to clear it, although the actual time can vary.

FAQ
Is HarmonyOS NEXT the same as HarmonyOS 6.1?
NEXT was Huawei’s 2024 name for its pure-HarmonyOS direction. Huawei’s current consumer support pages use HarmonyOS 5, 5.1, 6.0, and 6.1 instead. The current device list is published under HarmonyOS 6.1.
Will every device on Huawei’s list receive the update at the same time?
No. The list covers models announced for upgrade testing. Huawei uses phased rollouts, and timing can depend on the exact configuration, baseline software, region, and rollout channel.
Can a Huawei phone outside mainland China install this update?
Do not assume so. Huawei’s cited HarmonyOS 5, 6, and 6.1 programs apply to mainland China and exclude Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan. Global devices may follow different software plans.

What should I do if my listed device does not show an update?
Check the exact model and regional variant, install the required baseline version, use Wi-Fi, charge above 50%, and check again through Settings. The device may also be waiting for a phased rollout or may not match the eligible configuration.
The Bottom Line
Huawei’s current “HarmonyOS NEXT” successor is documented as HarmonyOS 5, 5.1, 6, and now 6.1. The official HarmonyOS 6.1 list includes selected Mate, Pura, nova, Pocket, MatePad, MateBook, and Watch models, but it is a mainland-China upgrade-testing list—not a worldwide promise of simultaneous OTA updates. Check the exact model and variant in Huawei’s support page, back up carefully, and use the software-update menu on the device before installing.
