Huawei’s FreeBuds Neo are unusually light, compact noise-cancelling earbuds with better-than-expected sound, call quality and device support. Their useful ANC and 4.8-gram design make them compelling for commuting, but runners should be cautious: the fit is comfortable rather than locked-in, transparency mode adds audible background noise, and battery life drops sharply when ANC and LDAC are used together.
What are the FreeBuds Neo?
Each earbud weighs about 4.8 g and the charging case about 31.4 g. Huawei uses an 11 mm multi-hole dynamic driver, Bluetooth 6.0, USB-C charging and touch controls. The earbuds have IP55 protection; that rating does not cover the case, so keep the case away from water and sweat.
The design is discreet, with short stems and a compact case. The short stems help the earbuds look unobtrusive, but they leave less surface area for controls. Several reviewers found the touch gestures harder to operate while moving, and the shortened stem removes the familiar pinch-style control found on some competing designs.

The Neo delivers broad, energetic sound from its 11 mm drivers, with enough weight for commuting and enough detail for general music listening. Passive isolation is good, and adaptive ANC adds a meaningful reduction in low-frequency noise on trains, in metro systems and on aircraft.
#1 Best Overall
Huawei’s launch material says the adaptive system reached a laboratory-tested average cancellation depth of 30 dB. That figure is a laboratory result, not a promise that every sound will be reduced by 30 dB: voices, high-pitched noises and poorly sealed ear tips remain more audible.
ANC in practical use
Independent testing consistently treats ANC as one of the Neo’s strengths. It is useful for engines, air-conditioning and other steady background sounds, making it easier to listen at moderate volume. The main weakness is transparency mode. Reviewers noticed background noise rather than hearing an especially natural, open reproduction of the surroundings.

Battery life: the headline number needs context
Huawei rates the earbuds for up to 10 hours of music without ANC or 6.5 hours with ANC. Including the case, the claims are 40 hours and 24 hours respectively. Huawei’s laboratory test used AAC at 50% volume, a Huawei Pura 80 Pro+, connection quality prioritized and default settings; volume, source, interference, enabled features and usage habits change the result.
A more demanding independent test measured approximately 4.5 hours with ANC and LDAC enabled. LDAC carries more data than AAC, so this is the battery figure to consider if you want high-resolution Bluetooth audio and active noise cancellation at the same time. A 10-minute case charge is claimed to provide about four hours of playback, although the exact gain depends on the same variables that affect normal battery life.

| Use case | Huawei claim | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Earbuds, ANC off | Up to 10 hours | AAC, 50% volume laboratory test |
| Earbuds, ANC on | Up to 6.5 hours | AAC, 50% volume laboratory test |
| With case, ANC off | Up to 40 hours | Laboratory total |
| With case, ANC on | Up to 24 hours | Laboratory total |
| ANC plus LDAC | About 4.5 hours | Notebookcheck measurement |
Calls, commuting and connectivity
The Neo uses three microphones, a bone-conduction sensor and anti-wind processing for calls. Reviews found voices clear, including in strong wind, which is an important advantage for outdoor commuting. Wind rejection cannot eliminate every gust, but the call system performs better than many inexpensive earbuds in exposed conditions.
Bluetooth 6.0, simultaneous dual-device connection and support for Android, iOS and Windows make the Neo flexible for switching between a phone and computer. Huawei advertises a range of up to 170 m under suitable conditions; walls, interference and device power can reduce that distance. Codec support includes SBC, AAC, LDAC and Huawei’s L2HC. There is no Auracast support and no wireless charging.

Comfort and workout security
For desk work, travel and long listening sessions, the low weight and comfortable shape are major advantages. The trade-off appears during exercise. Independent testing found the earbuds comfortable but not secure enough for athletic activity, while touch-only controls are awkward to use while running. Try the supplied ear-tip sizes and perform head turns, jumps and rapid arm movement before relying on them for workouts.
IP55 protects the earbuds against dust and water jets, but it is not a waterproof rating and does not protect the charging case. Wipe the earbuds dry before placing them in the case after a sweaty session.

Price and regional availability
Pricing varies by market. Notebookcheck lists a €129 recommended retail price, What Hi-Fi? reports £120 in the UK, and Huawei announced DKK 999 recommended retail pricing in Denmark. Huawei’s Danish launch announcement said sales began on 12 October 2026. Check the local listing before buying because taxes, promotions and launch timing differ by region.
Who should buy the FreeBuds Neo?
- Buy them if: you want very light earbuds, effective everyday ANC, clear calls, multipoint connection and extensive app controls in a small case.
- Think twice if: you run or train intensely, need a very natural transparency mode, or expect 6.5 hours or more when ANC and LDAC are both active.
- Best fit: commuters, office users and travellers who value comfort and call performance over a fully secure sports fit.
Verdict
The FreeBuds Neo avoid several common budget-earbud compromises: ANC is genuinely useful, sound is enjoyable, calls remain clear in wind, and the earbuds are light enough to wear for hours. Their practical limits are just as clear. Transparency sounds noisy, controls take practice, the case lacks wireless charging, and demanding ANC-plus-LDAC use produces roughly 4.5 hours in independent testing. For everyday listening and commuting, those strengths outweigh the compromises; for serious workouts or maximum battery endurance, choose a model with a more secure fit or lighter codec-and-ANC demands.
