Neither www nor non-www (often called a naked or apex domain) has an inherent SEO advantage. They are separate hostnames, so the important choice is to select one preferred HTTPS origin and make every other version resolve to it consistently. A clean implementation uses one-hop permanent redirects, self-referencing canonicals, preferred-origin internal links and sitemaps, and ongoing monitoring.
The direct answer: choose one HTTPS hostname
Google does not rank https://www.example.com higher than https://example.com, or vice versa, merely because of the hostname. The SEO risk comes from allowing both versions to remain independently accessible, or from implementing a move inconsistently.
For a new site, choose the hostname that fits your branding and infrastructure. For an established site, retain the form already used consistently unless there is a strong operational reason to change. A host change is a URL migration: it requires redirects, link and metadata updates, testing and monitoring, and can produce temporary visibility fluctuations.
Your target should be one canonical origin, such as https://www.example.com or https://example.com. The HTTP version, the alternate www state and the alternate HTTPS state should all lead directly to that origin while preserving the requested path and appropriate query parameters.

Think of the host as part of the URL identity, not as a cosmetic spelling choice. Search engines can discover, crawl and report www.example.com and example.com separately. Consolidation tells Google which URL should accumulate signals, while consistent links make it less likely that crawlers and users keep finding the alternatives.
What “www” and “non-www” actually mean
www.example.com and example.com are different hostnames even though they normally serve the same website. Browsers, DNS, cookies, TLS certificates and search engines treat the host portion of a URL as significant. The word “www” is not an SEO setting; it is a conventional subdomain label.

Do not select a hostname solely because another site uses it. Confirm that your DNS provider, certificate setup, CDN or reverse proxy, application and analytics tooling all support the same preferred origin. Also decide who owns redirects at the edge: a CDN, load balancer, web server or application can all perform them, but overlapping rules often create chains.

Why HTTPS should be canonical
HTTP and HTTPS are different URL protocols. HTTPS encrypts the connection and is the appropriate canonical protocol for a public website. Moving from HTTP to HTTPS is separate from deciding between www and non-www, but the two decisions are often implemented together.
Google treats protocol as a canonicalization signal. If both protocols remain crawlable without a clear preference, search engines and users can encounter duplicate URLs, insecure warnings, mixed-content problems or split reporting. Make the HTTPS URL the destination for both the HTTP and HTTPS forms of each hostname.
An HTTPS migration changes more than the homepage. Every indexable path, image, stylesheet, script, downloadable file, alternate-language reference and structured-data URL should use the preferred HTTPS origin where an absolute URL is required.
How to choose between www and non-www
For a new website
Compare the two forms against practical criteria rather than ranking folklore:
- Brand presentation: decide whether the visibly conventional “www” label or the shorter apex address better suits your audience.
- Service separation: if you expect separate web applications, media hosts or cookie boundaries, a www-based architecture may be operationally convenient because the website is already on a subdomain.
- DNS capability: verify how your provider maps the apex to your hosting or CDN. Some providers support apex aliasing or flattening; others make a subdomain CNAME simpler.
- Platform support: confirm that your hosting control panel, certificate manager, redirects, analytics and deployment process can all enforce the same origin.
For an established website
Keep the hostname already used by most internal links, canonical tags, sitemap entries, campaigns and indexed URLs unless the current setup has a specific defect. A cosmetic preference rarely justifies changing every URL on a mature site. If you do migrate, schedule the work as a controlled site move and measure the old and new hostnames separately.

Migration effort, cost and timing
There is no universal price for a www change. The direct configuration may be a small DNS or hosting task, but the total effort grows with the number of templates, applications, properties and teams that publish absolute URLs. Budget time for engineering, content-quality assurance, analytics validation and post-launch monitoring rather than treating the change as a single redirect rule.
- Lower-effort move: a small site with one platform, few templates and no hard-coded host references can usually update redirects, canonicals, links and its sitemap in one controlled release.
- Higher-effort move: large sites may need updates across a CDN, multiple origins, international versions, mobile or application endpoints, marketing systems, structured data and third-party integrations.
- Ongoing cost: retain the old-host redirects, certificate coverage and log monitoring. Keeping redirects for at least a year is practical; longer retention can continue helping users and signal transfer.
Plan the launch during a period when the team can watch logs and Search Console. Google says a medium-sized move can take a few weeks or more for new URLs to replace old ones, and larger sites can take longer. Temporary fluctuations are normal, but broken redirects or inaccessible certificates can turn a routine move into an outage.
Required end state: four common variants, one destination
For a preferred origin of https://www.example.com, these common variants should each redirect directly to the matching HTTPS URL:
http://example.com/pagehttp://www.example.com/pagehttps://example.com/pagehttps://www.example.com/page(the final URL)
If your preferred origin is the apex, reverse the hostnames in that example. The path should remain the same unless you are performing a separate content or URL-structure migration. Preserve query parameters when they affect the requested resource; remove tracking parameters only when your documented redirect policy allows it.
Step-by-step setup
1. Declare the canonical origin
Write down one exact origin, including protocol and hostname, and use it as the implementation contract. For example: https://example.com. Decide how trailing slashes, ports and query parameters are handled by your application so that equivalent requests do not create additional URL variants.
2. Cover every serving and redirecting hostname with TLS
Obtain a certificate that covers the preferred HTTPS hostname and any alternate hostname that must accept a request before redirecting. A browser cannot follow an HTTPS redirect if the initial TLS handshake fails because the certificate does not cover that host. Test certificate coverage on both www and non-www forms, not only the final destination.
3. Configure direct permanent redirects
At the edge, web server, CDN or hosting platform, map each non-preferred origin directly to the final HTTPS origin. Use a server-side permanent redirect, normally status 301 or 308. Do not create a sequence such as HTTP to www, then to HTTPS, then to the final host. Every extra hop adds latency and creates another point of failure.

4. Add self-referencing canonical tags
Each indexable page on the preferred host should contain a rel="canonical" link whose URL is that page’s preferred HTTPS URL. A product, article or guide should canonicalize to itself unless you deliberately consolidate it with another page.
Redirects and canonicals serve different purposes. A redirect controls the user’s request and tells crawlers that the old URL has moved. A canonical tag expresses the preferred representative when several URLs can still be discovered. Google describes canonical preference as a hint rather than a guarantee, so the tag should agree with redirects, internal links, sitemap entries and page content.
5. Replace non-preferred absolute URLs
Search your templates, content database and deployment configuration for the old protocol or hostname. Update:

- Internal navigation and contextual links
- Hreflang and alternate-language URLs
- Structured-data URL fields
- Open Graph and other social metadata
- Absolute image, script, stylesheet and download URLs
- Canonical tags and pagination references
- Email, advertising and campaign landing-page links that you control
Relative links can reduce host drift inside a site, but they do not replace updating fields that require an absolute URL. Check generated feeds, APIs, PDFs and downloadable documents too; these are frequent sources of old-host references after a migration.
6. Publish a preferred-only XML sitemap
Generate the sitemap with only live, indexable URLs on the canonical HTTPS origin. Do not list HTTP, alternate-host, redirected, blocked or non-canonical URLs as if they were final pages. Submit the sitemap after deployment so crawlers receive a consistent list of destinations.
7. Configure Search Console properties
Verify the relevant HTTP, HTTPS, www and non-www properties, or use a domain-level property that covers them where appropriate. This lets you see crawl and indexing behavior for every variant during the transition. A same-domain www-to-non-www or non-www-to-www change is not a use case for Search Console’s Change of Address tool; use the redirects and canonical signals instead.
8. Test representative URLs before launch
Choose examples from the homepage, a deep article, a parameterized URL, an image or download, and any language or directory structure. Check them in a browser, with curl -I, and through Search Console’s URL Inspection. The expected result for an alternate URL is one redirect hop and then a final 200 response for a live page.

A header check such as curl -I http://www.example.com/guides/setup should show the permanent redirect status and a Location header pointing directly to the chosen HTTPS origin. Repeat the check for all four protocol/hostname combinations and for paths other than the homepage.

9. Monitor the migration
After release, watch Search Console indexing reports, crawl errors, server logs, analytics, sitemap processing and traffic from old versus new URLs. Investigate increases in redirect errors, TLS failures, soft 404s, duplicate pages or sudden drops in indexed canonical URLs. Keep redirects from the old host in place for at least a year where practical; retaining them longer can continue helping users and preserve signal transfer.
What happens to rankings when you switch hosts?
A correctly consolidated www/non-www change is not supposed to provide a ranking boost or penalty by itself. It is still a migration, so Google must recrawl the redirects, process canonical signals and replace old URLs in its systems. Google says a medium-sized site can take a few weeks or more for new URLs to replace old ones, with larger sites often taking longer.
Short-term visibility or traffic fluctuations can occur while processing takes place. Separate migration effects from unrelated changes by recording the launch date, keeping the old URLs available through redirects, and comparing impressions, clicks, indexed pages, crawl statistics and server requests before and after the switch.

There are two or more redirect hops
Inspect the complete redirect chain with headers rather than checking only the final browser address. Consolidate protocol and hostname logic into a rule that points directly to the final HTTPS origin. Also check whether a CDN, load balancer, application framework or trailing-slash rule is adding another hop.
The alternate host shows a certificate warning
The redirecting hostname still needs valid TLS when it is requested over HTTPS. Add that hostname to the certificate and ensure the edge service presents the correct certificate before issuing the redirect.
Google selects a different canonical
Compare the selected URL with the page’s canonical tag, internal links, sitemap entry, redirect behavior and content similarity. Conflicting signals, inaccessible preferred pages or a canonical tag that points to a redirect can cause Google to choose another representative. Make all signals identify the same live URL, then allow time for recrawling.
Old-host URLs remain indexed
Continued indexing during a migration does not automatically indicate failure. Confirm that old URLs return the intended permanent redirect, that the sitemap lists only preferred URLs, and that internal links no longer promote the old host. Monitor the trend rather than removing redirects prematurely.

Check path preservation, case sensitivity, encoded characters, query handling and application routing. A host-only migration should not alter valid paths. Restore a broken route or create a deliberate page-level redirect for a separately changed URL; do not send every missing page to the homepage.

Users see mixed-content warnings
Find HTTP resources loaded by an HTTPS page and update their absolute URLs or serving configuration. Redirecting the document does not automatically make an embedded image, script, stylesheet or API request secure.
Analytics reports split traffic
Ensure the analytics property, referral exclusions, cross-domain settings and campaign links use the chosen origin. Keep annotations for the migration date so host-related changes are not mistaken for a demand change.
Implementation checklist
- One documented canonical origin: HTTPS plus either www or non-www.
- Valid TLS coverage for the preferred and redirecting hostnames.
- Direct 301 or 308 redirects from every alternate protocol/host combination.
- Path and appropriate query behavior preserved through redirects.
- Self-referencing canonical tag on every preferred indexable page.
- Internal links, hreflang, structured data, social metadata and absolute assets updated.
- XML sitemap containing only preferred live URLs.
- All relevant Search Console properties verified; no Change of Address for a same-domain host switch.
- Browser,
curl -Iand URL Inspection tests showing one hop and a final 200 response. - Ongoing monitoring of indexing, crawl errors, logs, analytics and old-host requests.
- Redirects retained for at least a year where practical.
Bottom line
Use either www or non-www, but do not use both as competing destinations. Select the hostname that fits your brand and infrastructure, make HTTPS canonical, redirect every alternate URL directly to it, and align canonicals, links, sitemaps and metadata. Consistency—not the presence or absence of “www”—is what protects your SEO during setup and migration.

Is www or non-www better for SEO?
Neither has an inherent ranking advantage. Choose one hostname, preferably on HTTPS, and make every other protocol and host variant redirect directly to it. Google evaluates the consistency of your canonical, redirect, link and sitemap signals rather than rewarding the presence or absence of “www.”
Should I use www or a naked domain?
Use the form that fits your brand and technical architecture. The apex is shorter, while www can be convenient when the website is already a subdomain and services or cookie boundaries need separation. Confirm that your DNS provider, CDN, hosting platform and certificate manager support the choice reliably.
Does changing from www to non-www hurt rankings?
A correctly implemented change should not create a lasting penalty or boost, but it is still a URL migration. Google may need a few weeks or more to replace old URLs on a medium-sized site, and temporary visibility fluctuations are possible. Broken redirects, missing paths or conflicting canonicals create the real risk.

No. Google Search Console says a move between www and non-www on the same domain should use canonical tagging and/or redirects without the Change of Address tool. Verify the relevant properties so you can monitor both hosts during the transition.
How do I set the canonical URL for my domain?
Choose one exact HTTPS origin and place a self-referencing rel="canonical" on every preferred indexable page. The URL in the tag should match the page’s final address, sitemap entry, internal links, hreflang references and structured-data URLs. Canonicals are hints, so all signals should agree.
Do both www and non-www hosts need TLS certificates?
