An HTTP security header audit clients can use is built from observed responses—not a scanner score. Check representative routes and response types, explain what each header means for that application, and give every finding evidence, a proportionate fix, an owner, and a retest condition.

Set the audit scope before checking headers

Agree which hostnames and environments are included, then select representative public and authenticated routes. Include redirects and error responses where relevant, and identify responses that serve HTML, JSON, downloads, or user-provided files. A browser-oriented policy may matter on an HTML page that loads scripts but offer little value for a JSON response.

Record known subdomains and third-party integrations, and document exclusions. This keeps the report from implying that routes or hosts outside the sample were assessed. OWASP’s ASVS 4.0.3 HTTP security headers requirements frame verification at the response level.

Collect evidence from actual responses

For each sampled route, capture the URL, status, redirect behavior, content type, relevant response headers, environment, and date of capture. Preserve the observed header values, not just a grade or pass/fail result. If access restrictions mean you could only test public pages, say so.

A homepage-only scan can provide an initial signal, but it cannot establish that every route, status code, or authenticated response behaves the same way. OWASP’s secure-header verification guidance discusses inspection tools; use automated collection alongside manual checks and application context. A tool can report what it observes, but it cannot decide by itself whether a policy fits the product.

Interpret each header in the application’s context

Content Security Policy

Content-Security-Policy (CSP) tells browsers which sources they may use for resources such as scripts. Assess the actual policy and the application’s legitimate dependencies rather than prescribing a generic string. OWASP notes that CSP is complex to configure and maintain; a policy can be present yet too permissive, or strict enough to disrupt required resources. The OWASP testing guidance for CSP covers inspecting its delivery and configuration.

When introducing or tightening a policy, first use Content-Security-Policy-Report-Only to observe likely violations without blocking page behavior. Investigate violations, distinguish legitimate dependencies from unwanted sources, and revise the policy before enforcing it. Prefer the HTTP response header: OWASP says it supports the full CSP feature set, while delivery through a meta element does not. See the OWASP CSP Cheat Sheet.

Strict Transport Security

Strict-Transport-Security (HSTS) tells browsers to continue accessing a site over HTTPS. Before increasing its duration or adding includeSubDomains, confirm HTTPS works and certificates are valid for every affected host. A long policy can make certificate or HTTPS problems consequential for users, and the subdomain directive broadens the policy’s reach. Treat preload as a deliberate deployment decision, not a casual toggle. OWASP explains the scope and rollout considerations in its HSTS Cheat Sheet.

Content type and nosniff

Check that each response declares an accurate Content-Type. X-Content-Type-Options with the value nosniff tells browsers to respect the declared media type instead of guessing. These controls work together: nosniff does not correct an inaccurate Content-Type.

Framing and referrer behavior

CSP’s frame-ancestors is OWASP’s modern framing control; X-Frame-Options can still matter for older browser compatibility. Determine whether the page has interactive content that could be framed and whether legitimate embedding is required before recommending restrictions.

For Referrer-Policy, explain what referrer information the current setting sends and whether that behavior fits the site’s privacy and integration needs. Do not treat one setting as automatically right for every application.

Caching, browser features, and cross-origin behavior

For sensitive responses, distinguish Cache-Control: no-store from no-cache: OWASP notes that no-cache allows storage but requires revalidation. Decide whether private or shared caching is appropriate for the response rather than applying a blanket directive.

GL.iNet GL-MT5000 Brume 3 Wired VPN Security Gateway NO Wi-Fi
  • 【Up to 1100 Mbps VPN Speed 】 Hardware-accelerated WireGuard and OpenVPN-DCO deliver up to 1100 Mbps VPN throughput, over 3× faster than Brume 2 for smooth remote access and file transfers.
  • 【Three 2.5G Ports & Multi-WAN】Tri-port 2.5GbE design with flexible WAN LAN configuration supports multi-gigabit wired setups, dual-ISP Multi-WAN and failover to keep home and SOHO networks online.
  • 【Stealth VPN Obfuscation】VPN obfuscation disguises VPN traffic as regular HTTPS, helping you evade blocking, bypass restrictive networks and maintain stable, private connections.
  • 【DPI protection】Deep Packet Inspection with visual dashboards blocks adult/gambling/malicious sites, while SQM and QoS prioritize gaming, calls, and video when bandwidth is tight
  • 【OpenWrt & USB 3.0 Expansion】OpenWrt with 1GB DDR4 and 8GB eMMC lets you install plugins and build VPN, ad-blocking or NAS, while USB 3.0 Type‑C connects high-speed storage or 4G/5G dongles

Evaluate Permissions-Policy and cross-origin controls against the features and resources the product actually uses. A broad sample policy copied without checking product requirements can disrupt legitimate behavior. A CORS value of *, for example, may be inappropriate for some endpoints; judge it in the context of the endpoint and its access needs.

Information-disclosing and obsolete headers

Server and X-Powered-By disclose technology details but are not protective headers. OWASP recommends minimizing such details while noting that removing these values does not prevent other forms of fingerprinting.

Do not report missing X-XSS-Protection, Expect-CT, or HPKP as defects to fix. OWASP advises against deploying these obsolete controls. The OWASP HTTP Headers Cheat Sheet covers these header purposes and recommendations.

Write findings clients can act on

Use the same compact structure for each finding so a client can understand the observation, its consequence, and what completion looks like:

Ubiquiti Cloud Gateway Ultra (UCG-Ultra)
  • Runs UniFi Network for full-stack network management
  • Manages 30+ UniFi Network devices and 300+ clients
  • 1 Gbps routing with IDS/IPS
  • Multi-WAN load balancing
  • 0.96" LCM status display
  1. Finding and priority: Give it a plain-language name and explain briefly why it is urgent, an improvement, or not applicable.
  2. Where observed: Identify the exact route or response class, environment, status, and capture date.
  3. Evidence: Quote the relevant response header value or state precisely that it was absent. Include enough context to reproduce the observation.
  4. Meaning and risk: Explain the browser behavior and realistic risk for this application. Distinguish a confirmed weakness from a general hardening opportunity.
  5. Recommended change: State the policy-level action while accounting for required behavior. Name the serving layer only if it is known; otherwise ask the client to confirm where the response is configured.
  6. Caveat and retest: Note compatibility, subdomain, third-party, or deployment considerations. Define which response should be checked again and what acceptable behavior or value will demonstrate success.

For example, “CSP missing” is not a complete explanation. Identify the affected HTML route, show the response evidence, describe the relevant risk, and propose a policy that reflects the application’s real resource dependencies. A present header is not automatically correct, either: a permissive CSP may do little to constrain resources, while an overly restrictive one may break the application.

Prioritize, compare, and retest

Prioritize findings using exposure, data sensitivity, exploitability, breadth of affected routes, and implementation risk. Separate urgent defects from lower-priority improvements and controls that do not apply to the response type. Do not make a score the explanation: the client needs the evidence and a decision they can act on.

When comparing inspection approaches, focus on whether they cover routes, redirects, errors, and authenticated responses; whether they check only header presence or also policy quality and application context; whether results are repeatable and exportable; and how findings are explained and prioritized. Include the need for manual verification and retesting. OWASP lists relevant inspection tools, but the cited guidance does not establish a comparative ranking of vendors’ accuracy or price.

After remediation, repeat the same route and response checks, compare the captured values, and document remaining exceptions. If the sample reveals no issue, report what was sampled and the coverage limitation rather than claiming every response has been verified.
