Choose an HPE ProLiant server by starting with the workloads it must run and the site where it will live—not by picking a family name or maximum capacity. Define performance, growth, availability, and space requirements; then compare tower, rack, and high-density options and confirm the exact configuration in current QuickSpecs and a written regional quote.
1. Size the server around your workloads
List the applications and services the server will host, how many people or systems will use them concurrently, and what performance and availability they require. Include expected growth so the purchase has useful headroom without paying for capacity you do not need.
Translate those requirements into the resources that affect performance and expansion:
- Compute: processor architecture, socket count, and core capacity for the applications and virtual machines you expect to run.
- Memory: capacity and supported DIMM configuration for workloads such as virtualization, databases, or VDI.
- Storage: drive type, number, performance, and usable capacity after accounting for resilience needs.
- Connectivity and expansion: network adapters, PCIe slots, and any GPU requirements.
- Availability: the level of redundancy and service coverage the business needs.
Workload categories such as virtualization, databases, file services, edge processing, VDI, and accelerated computing can point to different configurations. HPE’s ProLiant portfolio compares systems across workload and hardware dimensions; use it to build a shortlist, not as a substitute for sizing your own environment.
#1 Best Overall
- 3.50 GHz processor speed ensures efficient operation with consistent reliability
- Intel Xeon 3.50 GHz processor provides enterprise-grade performance with built-in security and remote management capabilities
- Quad-core (4 Core) processor core handles data efficiently for faster processing and better usability
- 1 processors supported for optimal performance and maximum reliability in mission-critical server environments
- With 32 GB memory, improve system performance and reduce processing delays
2. Choose a form factor and family for your site
HPE’s broad family positioning helps narrow the search. The right deployment form also depends on the room, rack, power, cooling, noise, cabling, and service access available at your site.
| Family or form | HPE’s positioning | What to assess |
|---|---|---|
| DL rack servers | Rack-oriented data-center, virtualization, hybrid-cloud, and general enterprise workloads | Rack space and depth, power and cooling, cabling, and access for installation and service |
| ML tower or rack-convertible servers | SMB, edge, remote-office, and expandable mixed workloads | Whether a tower suits the available office space, and whether the exact model supports the desired expansion or rack conversion |
| XD systems | Dense, demanding AI, model-training, data-analytics, and GPU-computing needs | Accelerator requirements, density, site capacity, and the supported configuration of the specific model |
A tower can be easier to place where there is no existing rack, while a rack server may be a better fit for established rack infrastructure. Neither form factor automatically ensures suitable cooling, power, noise levels, or service access. Check the selected system’s installation guide against the actual site.

- 2.80 GHz processor speed ensures efficient operation with consistent reliability
- Intel Xeon 2.80 GHz processor provides enterprise-grade performance with built-in security and remote management capabilities
- Quad-core (4 Core) processor core helps server process data quickly and reliably for maximum productivity
- 1 processors supported for faster processing and improved access to data, optimizing performance under heavy loads
- With 16 GB memory, you can multitask between applications seamlessly, keeping productivity high and response times quick
3. Shortlist models without mistaking maximums for requirements
HPE’s portfolio presents systems using comparison points such as workload, rack units, cooling, processor, maximum memory, storage, management, and GPU capability. Use those dimensions to narrow your candidates, then verify that the configuration you need is supported by the current QuickSpecs for the exact model.
Maximum memory or storage capacity is an upper limit, not a recommendation for your workload. Check the supported processor and DIMM combinations, drive options, expansion slots, networking, GPU support, and management and security features for the specific model and generation.

Tower candidates
- MicroServer Gen11: HPE lists it for SMB and remote-site contexts. Treat it as a small-footprint candidate only if its supported capacity and expansion meet the workload.
- ML30 Gen11: HPE Store describes this tower line for small offices and remote or branch offices, with optional redundant power and drive or expansion choices. Confirm the options on the precise SKU; they are not necessarily included across the line.
- ML110 Gen11: HPE Store describes a single-processor tower with expansion and a tower-to-rack conversion option. Check the exact configuration rather than applying capabilities from one store listing to every SKU.
- ML350 Gen11: HPE describes a two-processor tower with an optional rackable chassis and associates the line with a wider range of demanding workloads. Compare it where its additional compute or expansion is justified by requirements.
For rack deployments, compare DL models against the workload and existing infrastructure. Consider XD systems when dense AI, analytics, or GPU computing is a genuine requirement, rather than choosing a specialized platform based on a workload label alone.
4. Compare the exact generation and lifecycle
HPE positions Gen11 as suitable for many current infrastructure needs and Gen12 as designed for next-generation performance, security, efficiency, and automation. Depending on the model, Gen12 may offer newer processors, updated iLO, expanded memory or storage configurations, PCIe Gen5, or liquid cooling, with systems spanning workloads from VDI to AI. These capabilities are model-dependent; do not assume every Gen12 server includes every feature.

Compare the exact configuration’s supported software, lifecycle, service coverage, and total cost. A newer generation is not automatically the better purchase if the specific model, workload fit, or support terms do not meet your needs.
